Battlefield 3's multiplayer runs on a new back-end dedicated server structure. The studio hoped to give that system a thorough stress test with the game's ongoing open multiplayer beta, and has it ever. According to DICE GM Karl Magnus Troedsson, the studio is seeing peak numbers of more than 12 million simultaneous players in the ongoing Battlefield 3 open multiplayer beta.

Posting on the official Battlefield Blog, Troedsson provides an overview of the beta and thanks gamers for their overwhelming response.

"The biggest reason for running the Open Beta is to stress test our servers and back end," Troedsson writes. "Already, we are seeing 6 times the number of simultaneous players in the Battlefield 3 Open Beta compared to the Beta for Battlefield: Bad Company 2! The fact that Battlefield 3 is clearly our biggest game launch ever by a magnitude of 6 makes it doubly important to test everything."

As noted by VG247, the Bad Company 2 beta in January 2010 hit a peak of more than 2 million simultaneous players. While Troedsson did not provide specific figures, that would put the BF3 beta at over 12 million simultaneous players.

Troedsson added that DICE is using the test as a true beta, not a demo, and gathering as much information as possible from it to make the final game better.

"We are constantly updating the News section on Battlelog with information on what we are fixing from Open Beta to final. We appreciate your time and your feedback. The data and feedback from the Open Beta will not only directly affect the final game of Battlefield 3, but its future development and support."

Battlefield 3 is in development for Windows PCs, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The game is set to ship on October 25.

Spy Guy says: I'm definitely enjoying the beta -- and definitely rusty at Battlefield. But if there is one thing the Operation Metro map proves, it's that DICE still has a lot of work to do. Hopefully, we won't see another launch like BC2. Now to open Caspian Border, and real Battlefield-style gameplay, to all!
