Before our interview with Assassin's Creed Producer Jade Raymond, we got to see a new level demonstrated. We returned to Acre, skipping over the hunt portion of the game, to go immediately to attempting to cut down a rebellious, war-mongering minion of Richard the Lion-Hearted. Although what we saw was similar to our E3 demonstration, it seems like a lot of polish has been applied as the game nears release.
I Shall Not Fear...
We began our demonstration during one of Assassin's Creed's cinematic sequences, where you retain control over the assassin, but can't do any actual assassination. So, while we did circle as we watched the Lion-Hearted and his war-hungry liegeman argue, it wasn't possible to jump the gun (so to speak) and kill the man then and there. Instead, we followed him to his fortified Regent's seat in Acre.
The fortified walls and armed guards of his citadel made a direct assault an act of idiocy at best, although careful, slow movement allowed us to drift past the outer walls with a crowd, an unseen and lethal contagion. Instead of confrontation we chose ascension, climbing up a wall where the guards weren't quite as alert. But our target was taking no chances; bowmen lined the roof.
To get through them, we sent Altair into the closest an assassin gets to guns-blazing. Without hesitation, we set our sights on each guard and snapped one of our precious few throwing knives into them. The consumable knives were one-shot ranged kills, allowing us to ensure that the guards went down before they could so much as see us, let alone sound an alarm.
Once we'd dealt with the guards on the roofs of the fortress' walls, we watched our target brief his guards in a square. Taking a risky route, we struck out to eliminate the chase of our quarry all together, leaping with wrist blade out to kill him in one stroke. It worked, as we reached him before any of his guards noticed us, but it was definitely tough. The high risk of the move definitely made the moment of crouching over our downed prey all the more fulfilling.
