Def Jam: Fight for NY

Xbox Reviews | Sep 20, 2004

I'll say it again: whoever at EA came up with the idea to make a wrestling game starring some of hip hop's most flamboyant personalities must have been crazy. But apparently, the idea was just crazy enough to work. Now in its second iteration, the Def Jam wrestling games continue to defy logic. Given how well received its predecessor was, it's not really surprising that Def Jam: Fight for NY turned out as well as it did. What is surprising, however, is just how much more was packed into this sequel. EA didn't settle for a half-assed roster update. Def Jam: Fight for NY

Xbox Previews | Aug 27, 2004

"50 percent primping, 50 percent pounding, and 100 percent hardcore." That would be an apt description for Def Jam: Fight for NY's single-player story mode. Don't get it twisted: this is as much a "lifestyle" game as it is a superb vehicle for Aki Corporation's masterful fighting engine, and lucky for you, both aspects of its seem to have been developed wholeheartedly. Creating your ghetto fabulous persona is just as fun as it should be, given the breadth of customization options at your disposal. The metaphor through which it goes down is amusing, too: you actually assume the role of someone who your character assaulted, and detail the particulars of his appearance to a police profile artist. You can get pretty down and dirty with it; you can set the length of his head and face, the shape of his nose, mouth, and lips, his build and height, skin tone, and even the appearance of the hair on his head and face.
