My Formula for Styling Your Bookshelves

I'm what you'd call a chronic bookshelf styler. If that is such a thing ;) I absolutely love displaying my favorite things on my bookshelves and creating a balanced, cohesive look. I think something people might struggle with is how to arrange their treasures on their shelves in an aesthetically pleasing way. Often I'll see objects and books just shoved on a bookshelf, and I want you to know that there is  simple formula to create a well-styled bookshelf in no time at all!

via

1. Clear off your entire bookshelf. Starting fresh is always the best way to do it.

2. Start by putting the boxes and books back on the shelf first. Turning some books horizontally and stacking some vertically. In the example below, I also placed the boxes on the bottom shelf.

3. Now it's time to fill in with larger decorative objects like candle sticks, globes, art leaning against the back wall, big vases, etc.

4. Finish off with the little decor, like something fresh. Little plants are the perfect finish touches. Adding something green or natural (like sea shells, dried flowers) always bring life to the vignette. This is also the time to add your small accessories like candles, little sculptures, etc.

So the formula is books and baskets, larger objects, decor and art, then little decor and plants.

The goal here is to create balance. Balance is the art of arranging objects so they achieve equal distribution of weight. This can mean darker objects being spread out around the shelves to distribute the heavier visual weight. It can also mean placing larger objects towards the bottom of the shelf (like the large gold vase placed at the bottom of my bookcase below) so it doesn't feel too top heavy.

Other helpful tips:

- Our eyes see things best in 3's or odd numbers! (You can see how I decorated my shelf in 3's)
- Create height by stacking books or even leaving a book out for display if it has a pretty cover! Height can also be created by displaying candle sticks, the globe, varied vase heights, etc.
- Any books that are stacked vertically (generally a stack of 2-4 books is best) requires an object on top of them to ground the look. A candle, picture frame, or plant are great ideas.
- Paint the back of your bookcase a different color or wallpaper it to add interest and texture.
- Arrange your books by color or turn the spines toward the wall so that's a nonissue.
- Sometimes, if you are decorating a lot of shelves, it's nice to give one shelf a breather and only place ONE object on it-- think an oblong bowl full of apples or lemons.

I love how the gold objects are spread out in this to show you balance. They have a great mix of white items with texture here that make a subtle statement, too.

Hopefully these tips are helpful! I always tell my clients you want to fill your shelves, but you don't want to feel overwhelmed when you look at the shelves. If that's the feeling you get, it's time to take something away. Just like Coco Chanel says, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.” We can use this same principle and apply it to our homes!

If you're feeling brave, take a picture of your bookshelves and tag me on Instagram so I can see them! If you need help with the styling, I'll try to offer my suggestions on your post :) @michaelanoelledesigns

Coffee Table Books & Styling

I'm not the biggest reader, but I do love me some pretty coffee table books. These are the fun, colorful books with tons of pictures. Right up my alley-- I did always like picture books best ;) Anyways, not only are these books beautiful, they are also great to decorate with. Books are a great way to create height on your shelves. Here are some books around our home for inspiration:

I rounded up a couple of my favorite design books, but decided not to stop there. There are some beautiful and delicious cook books out there, so I put a few of my favorites below. And then for the times I do actually read, I'm sharing a few of my favorites of those as well!

Designthe inspired room / cut flower garden / the year of cozy / styled by emily henderson /

Colorful, Bohemian Wedding Inspiration

Most of you know that in addition to being an interior designer, I'm also the co-founder of The Bloom Workshop. Each of our two day workshops finish with a beautiful styled wedding shoot for our guests (usually event planners, bloggers, stylists, florists, photographers and other creatives) get to practice their new skills. They then get to use the photos from the shoot for their portfolios! We take on all the hard work that goes into planning a styled inspiration shoot away, so they can just enjoy styling and photographing it.

The shoot I'm sharing with you today comes from our last workshop of 2016, in San Clemente, CA. My business partner, Ashley, and I agree this is one of our favorite shoots we've designed for a workshop! Just look at the bright, cheery and rich color palette!! Those flowers were so ridiculously amazing I could hardly stand it. It was featured on Style Me Pretty last week, so we can finally share it with you today! Hopefully it provides some inspiration for your spring and summer gatherings :)

Often bright color palettes are overlooked, favoring the soft pastels which we also adore. But for this styled shoot, we wanted the palette to be vibrant and energizing; fresh and fun. Bright pinks, oranges, corals, lots of greenery and even hints of lavender and soft pink were our hues. Accented by pops of dark blue and copper, the tablescape exudes warmth, togetherness, and drips in romance.

With a bit of a bohemian twist, we created a casual yet sophisticated tablescape, complete with comfy royal blue end chairs from Found Vintage Rentals and a simple copper garden chair to give the setting a touch of metallic. Playing with texture was one of our goals, so we mixed different wood tones with copper details, such as the Moscow mule mugs and chairs, brass candlesticks, silver flatware, gold etching in our champagne flutes, many different types of flowers and greenery, varied surfaces such as marble and wood, and made sure to incorporate textured details into our gorgeous bridal gowns seen in the beading and sleeves.

A few fun details were added to make the look even more unique, including our signature cocktail illustration, the rich colored fruits dripping off the floral centerpiece and onto the table, our delectable dessert bar and the agate stone coasters doubling as place cards.

Vintage Wedding Idea: Antique Window as Seating Chart [+ it's for SALE!]

The idea of using an antique window as a seating chart display is nothing new but it's such a beautiful idea and because I happened to score a gorgeous antique German window while I was living in Europe, I thought I'd have a little fun styling it for show and tell with you guys! ... And, yes, it's for sale if you're interested! [Details below] :)
Recognize those wedding wands? They're from my wedding! ;)

I used a white wet erase chalk marker that I picked up at my local craft store to write the names + table numbers on the windowpanes. Easy as pie!

ABOUT THE WINDOW

I found this darling German window at a market in the very town we lived which was nestled in the Mosel River Valley. This window was an original attic window of a historic house in our town and the owners were selling because they had just recently installed new windows to go along with a modern renovation on their home. I promptly scarfed the cutie up and wheeled her home in my trusty wheely cart. I found the tiny windowpanes so charming and if you've ever visited Germany or France, you'll immediately recognize the style as so very European - it's the type of window you see on almost all the beautiful historic homes. The painted wood is incredibly weathered and warped which lends such a rich patina to the overall look - it almost resembles grayed driftwood which I find so romantic! Original metal hinges and a small original knob can be found on the back of the window which add to the rustic charm. The window frame is entirely wooden except for the small, horizontal windowpanes on the glass - those appear to be aluminum. The window had been painted white at sometime and the paint is currently very sparse and chippy {which I love!}. However, if you'd prefer it to be more gray to resemble natural weathered wood, you could chip the remaining white paint completely off to achieve that look.

Recognize the shoes? My wedding shoes! ;)

And the best part is there are sooo many ways you can style these beauties in your home after the wedding. One of my friends in Germany used an old window as a bulletin board in her office - she'd use washi tape to attach vintage postcards/inspiration and she'd drape the most adorable glittered bunting across the windowpanes - it was amazing and I should have taken a photo to show you guys! You can also hang them or prop them against the wall in your living room or dining room as a statement piece and the best part of it all is that it will always remind you of your big day!
