John Sandford: Heat lightning

Kirjan päähenkilö Virgil Flowers on mukavanoloinen sanavalmis heppu, mutta hänkään ei jaksa loppujen lopuksi pitää kiinnostusta kovin pitkään yllä. Rutiininomaista viihdettä.

Working the murders, Flowers becomes convinced that someone is keeping a list—with many more names on it. And when he discovers what connects them all, he’s almost sorry. John Sandford: Dark of the moon

John Sandfordin jännärissä selvitetään pikkukaupungissa tapahtunutta murhatapausta, jossa rikoksen uhrista ei juuri mitään hyvää sanottavaa löydy: Dark of the moon (Pocket Books, 2008; ISBN 978-1-84739-185-8).



Kirjan päähenkilö on juttelee nokkelasti ja saa selville kaikenlaista puheensolinansa ohessa, ja tarina rullaa paikoittain eteenpäin varsin mallikkaasti, mutta sitä ei voi piilottaa että melkolailla tyhjänpäiväinen on romaanin kuvaama maailma, eikä kerronnassa ole mitään erityistä omaperäisyyttä, ja kirjan luettuaan ei ollut juuri mitään muistikuvia siitä mitä tuli luettua.

Virgil Flowers — tall, lean, late thirties, three times divorced, hair way too long for a cop's — had kicked around a while before joining the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. First it was the army and the military police, then the police in St. Paul, and finally Lucas Davenport had brought him into the BCA, promising him, "We'll only give you the hard stuff."

He'd been doing the hard stuff for three years now — but never anything like this.

In the small town of Bluestem, where everybody knows everybody, a house way up on a ridge explodes into flames, its owner, a man named Judd, trapped inside. There is a lot of reason to hate him, Flowers discovers. Years ago, Judd had perpetrated a scam that'd driven a lot of local farmers out of business, even to suicide. There are also rumors swirling around: of some very dicey activities with other men's wives; of involvement with some nutcase religious guy; of an out-of-wedlock daughter. In fact, Flowers concludes, you'd probably have to dig around to find a person who didn't despise him.

John Sandford: Storm prey

John Sandford kirjoittaa kovaotteisia jännäreitä, ja sellainen tarttui kirjastosta mukaan: Storm prey (Simon & Schuster, 2011; ISBN 978-1-84739-769-0).



Kirjan nimi on jotakuinkin harhaanjohtava, koska myrskyllä ei ole juurikaan tekemistä tapahtumien kanssa. Sairaalan lääkevarastoon tehdyn varkauden yhteydessä yksi sairaalan työntekijöistä kuolee. Varkaat aloittavat keskinäisen välienselvittelyn, ja yrittävät samalla hävittää ja sotkea johtolangat.

Sandford osaa kieltämättä pyörittää tarinaa, mutta jotain laskelmoivaa tässä kirjassa on, pyrkimystä kirjoittaa tarina joka möisi mahdollisimman hyvin.

John Sandford: Naked prey

Tässä John Sandfordin jännärissä ei ollut oikeastaan muuta vikaa kuin se, että teos on kirjasarjan 14. osa, ja teoksessa oli aika paljon sellaista mikä viittasi sarjan aiempiin teoksiin. Mutta itse jännäri, joka kuvaa Minnesotan pohjoisosien elämää, ei hassumpi ole, ja vaikka henkilögalleria on isonpuoleinen, Sandford on sen verran taitava kirjoittaja että paketti pysyy tiiviisti kasassa: Naked prey (Pocket Books, 2004; ISBN 0-7434-6869-4).



Tapahtumat lähtevät liikkeelle siitä, että kaksi ihmistä löytyy hirtettynä puusta. Toinen uhreista on musta mies ja toinen valkoinen nainen, joten tilanne on poliittisesti tulenarka. Yllätyksiä seuraa yksi toisensa jälkeen.

Rikoksia selvittelevä Lucas Davenport on poliittisesti hankalien tilanteiden ongelmanratkaisija, ja onneksi tässä tarinassa käytetään enemmänkin älyä kuin nyrkkejä. Tästä iso plussa.
