Flying saucer Attack & Roy Montgomery - Goodbye [1997]

Deep exprimental, because in the look of the blue sky, you bring to you a heart with alive music from another planet, you teach in chapters the verbs that the past does not extract, that the future does not concern for him, is in the moment of the act sadness, when we decorate the empty spaces with multiple benefits of the radiance, can exceed four points since I mutate cosmic agreement, in the dimension of the stormy wind the signs of peace are close to an egg, incubating it , spreading in his figure of oval, a small cap of glass ground whom you were called water mirrors and that in a precocious attempt for taking, takes off you of the blood, it invites you to see your flight of the perfection for the walls of the mother.
Flying Saucer Attack and Roy Montgomery union is given, in the year 1997, Goodbye demonstrates in environmental compositions that they explore in the analogous movements of the feedback, one formulates that it results in beautiful frequencies, controlled noises that in his lapse of time are capable of shaking in the man's perpetual search a beginning.

So (Markus Popp + Eriko Toyoda) [2003]

So began in 2002 with the pair of Eri and Markus Popp (Oval, Microstoria) working together as a true symmetrical duo with both members equally contributing to the songwriting and electronic processing. An absolute departure from Oval, So's debut CD is a melodic, at times soothing technological demonstration. The album began as a reworking of a song cycle from Eri's archives. These archives are comprised of a vast collection of diverse materials she recorded in her parents' house in Mito-City, Japan. The sounds represent a significant departure from the dense, abrasion of Oval's ground-breaking Commers series, and instead moves towards more airy and organic tones. The inclusion of vocals and live instrumentation allow for So's music to expand far beyond the constraints of the purely digital.

So derives its momentum from an almost constant confrontation with Markus and Eri's conceptualizations and implementations of music. The actual collaborative process is more a resemblance of an 18th century naval battle than a convenient exercise in file sharing. It is fundamentally different to Oval recordings which are linear and strategic on the planning board, while So lost the compass from the beginning and is more a free project.

Album artwork was created by Katsumi Yokota, the prolific Japanese illustrator who made contributions to the most experimental stages of the United Game Artist's video game classic, Rez (released for Dreamcast and PS2 in 2002). There are no song titles as it is too much of a compromise to put English song titles to Japanese lyrics. So will be touring with Oval in the fall of 2003. For these shows, Markus and Eri have built a completely customized, So Fi-PA-system. It will consist of two Triode amplifiers based on ancient schematics, rated at 6-8 Watts each. As well a set of homemade broadband speakers consisting of 1950s broadband speakers (from movie theaters), using an empty bottle as a quasi-backloaded Tractrix (Spherical) horn and mounted in plain cardboard boxes. This custom traveling PA will allow them to perform concerts in cafes and galleries as well as clubs. Perhaps a reaction to the reaction that has become the standard.

Pink Reason - Cleaning The Mirror [2007]

Based in London, Rothko were founded by Mark Beazley and have been in existence since the spring of 1997, playing their first show at The Hope and Anchor in Islington in August the same year.

Their first release was a 7" single, For Danny, on Fierce Panda in the Autumn of '97 and the original line up of Mark, Crawford Blair and Jon Meade, went on to release EP's, singles and three albums, on labels such as Lo Recordings, Bella Union, Foundry, Kraak, Zeal and Narwhal.

In 2000 Mark signed a publishing deal with Mute Song.

The original line up disbanded in 2001 and Mark carried on the Rothko name. His first release on his own was his collaboration with Japanese ambient master Susumu Yokota, the 12" EP Waters Edge on Jon Tye's Lo Recordings.

Late in 2001, Mark signed a deal with Too Pure Records and in 2002 released the album 'A Continual Search For Origins' and 7" single Red Cells.

In 2003 Mark started his own label, Trace Recordings, releasing the critically acclaimed Wish For A World Without Hurt album, a collaboration with BLK w/BEAR aka Washington DC based sound and visual artist Jim Adams.

Roy Montgomery - Scenes From The South Island [1995]

Since I close my eyes, the shades in her natural, underlying functioning, to the meeting of a branch of clouds stopped in the air, the man sat opposite to a table full of imaginary appliances, with which her peregrinaje initiates, speech with honesty of her work, cultivating, and to create a guitar, to give life to this wonderful disc, polite of simple melodies for strings made concrete with spiritual serenity, a desert of dark sands, from the top of a dune, where they come rolling the dry branches that indicate the austere condition of her environment, of an environment just before coming to my feet, And it sinks when the first note sounds, interpreting this doubt in the duality of the facts, with perfection it denotes to the fear, this cold caress of the iron to the meat, when it is not possible to be orientated in the infinite position of belonging, lost to the compass of the following cuts, in the black surface, all his senses in a mantra, until in Twilight Conversation we recognize the soul a hole, of vegetable fragrances, they will be 2 meters to the bottom, it penetrates, in search of water, and of surviving the enchantment, which out blows of the wind emulated in Roy Montgomery's guitar. The Road To Diamond Harbour saturates with overdrive at the night, and they turn the ravens like indicating the hour destined to die.
It is the first disc that the artist of New Zealand throws, in her empty island he submerges inside the mind to give reality and vitality to his work as initiation to the new world that offers us
here.

Glenn Branca x 3

Branca's next symphony was "The Peak Of The Sacred", a longer and more ambitious piece than the first. Branca's desire to work with a new sound he had developed caused him to design and build most of the instruments for the piece. Calling them "mallet guitars" he had created a dulcimer like instrument which when played resonated with a sustained fluid timbre.
Although the instruments used guitar strings and guitar pickups the only actual conventional guitar used in the piece was a bass. Luckily Branca's musicians were willing to learn how to play these "guitars" which sat on tables and were played with sticks. This was also one of the few pieces in which Branca also used tape electronics. Although the piece had a rich resonant sound it was difficult to capture in a recording, a problem that Branca has had throughout his career. A studio recording was never made and the only document that exists is a crude live recording. This had also been the case with Symphony No. 1. Although Branca's audience had grown quite large by this time record labels saw no commercial potential for this sort of thing. And the cost of professionally recording these larger pieces would have been beyond the scope of what a small label could hope to recoup. By this time the music could no longer be seen as rock at the same time that it couldn't be embraced as classical music. And after having been rejected by Cage even "new music" was no longer an entirely safe haven. Luckily it happened that the music did appeal to modern dancers and in 1982 Branca got his first major commission from the Twyla Tharp Co. This would be one of many in a string of commissions from dance and later experimental theater companies.
Throughout these early years Glenn had never received a single grant or even a credit card and all of the work was done with little or no money. His reliance on cheap used guitars had been a matter of necessity not choice.

By the way the pronunciation of Glenn's name is "Brang-ka" not "Bron-ka".

Chicago Underground Quartet [2001]

This self titled release is the debut as a Quartet for the Chicago Underground collective. In addition to the already established Chicago Underground Duo of Rob Mazurek (cornet, electronics) and Chad Taylor (percussion), the quartet model features Jeff Parker (Tortoise, Isotope 217) on guitar and Noel Kupersmith (Brokeback) on upright bass. For those familiar with the Chicago Underground Duo?s recordings, Parker and Kupersmith add a lush, organic tone to the proceedings: abstract sonics meet gorgeous melody in this extraordinary sound collage. The Chicago Underground Quartet merges sound from disparate worlds that collide and caress in unexpected ways. From the opening arpeggio figure of "Tunnel Chrome" to the free improvisations of "Sink, Charge, Fixture" to the futuristic moog melody of "Nostalgia." Lau Nau

Last year saw an explosion & all too welcome interest in a vital, tightly knit scene of artists from Finland. Out of the communal circle of prodigious Finnish musicians comes this lovely 10 song debut solo outing of abstract folk, stray kiss lullaby & plucked blues by Laura Naukkarinen (vocalist in Kiila, Päivänsäde, The Anaksimandros). Sung in her native tongue, Kuutarha intimates a secret language outside traditional word speak into something utterly beautiful & unrestrained. Melody is suggested through the contours of voice, guitar & violin and arrangement has less to do with the placement of things than with Lau's comfort in letting sounds fall where they may. Line up: Laura Naukkarinen (acoustic bass, bass recorder, five-stringed kantele, acoustic guitar, tenor recorder, violin, bamboo flute, colorful juice glasses, mortar, mandolin, witch laugh megaphone, baby's rattle, bike bells, banjo, cowbells, electric guitar, organ, willow whistle, tablas, percussion, cymbals, comb, beer cans); Pekko Käppi (tamboura, jouhikko).

Nukkuu (Finnish for Sleeps) is the long awaited sophomore album by celebrated Finnish folk fave Lau Nau. Nukkuu is psychedelic, abstract & emotionally captivating. Nukkuu is an album of changes.

In the years since her debut album Kuutarha, Laura became a mother, moved to the Finnish countryside and took valuable time to carve out a space for her enchanted art in the new found tranquility of her remote surroundings.

Conceived in tight attics & vacant dens on off hours when her young son Nuutti was fast asleep, this is an intimately crafted 9 song collection that unfolds like dreamlike musical ribbons for the senses and delivers the listener to a place of unhurried contentedness.

Digipak cd & deluxe gatefold 180 gram vinyl will be n stores May 13, 2008.

Mice Parade - The True Meaning of Boodleybaye [2000]

Mice Parade was originally the solo project of New Yorker Adam Pierce, who has also played in Swirlies, The Dylan Group, HiM, múm, and Philistines Jr.

From its outset, Mice Parade showed a boldly inventive, highly individual take on post-rock / electronica. Following 1998's Bubble Core album, 'The True Meaning Of BoddleyBaye', their first FatCat album, 'Ramda' (‘99), forged a distinctive, immersive audio space of piled-up percussion and atmospheric, hook-laden melodics. 2001 saw the release of a third album, ‘Mokoondi’, which marked a shift in the Mice Parade sound, including the increased influence of Eastern harmonics and African beats, and the formation of a proper band of musicians. What started out as a studio project has since developed into a full touring band, based around a two-drumkit rhythm section, with HiM’s Doug Scharin on the other kit. Also in accompaniment are vibes, violin, classical guitar, rhodes piano and old synths, and a variety of acoustic / world instruments, forging Mice Parade into a seriously talented, energetic live unit.

'Focus On The Rollercoaster' was released in December 2003, followed sharply by the LP, 'Obrigado Suadade', the following month. This album, Mice Parade's third for FatCat, saw the band moving into poppier, more accessible terrain, with Pierce introducing full vocals for the first time, including contributions on several tracks by Kristin from múm. The subsequent LP, 'Bem-Vinda Vontade' expanded this theme, albeit with more sonic emphasis on FX driven indie-rock guitars. Featuring guest vocals from Letitia Sadier and Kristin Valtisdóttir, Mice Parade's most recent eponymously titled offering, could be seen as a refined take on the ground made over the previous two, merging folk-tinged electronica with the ‘Loveless’ era swoon of My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic subtlety of Can, and the opaque melodic experiments of Brian Eno. Yet as ever, Mice Parade’s sound is essentially modern, informed by an esoteric palette, retaining a familiar acoustic presence via an uncliched take on folk/world influences.

This would have been a lot more exciting if you could see what I was painting. An action painting would have been better. You can see what I've added: a ship, the Taj Mahal and I worked on the castle. I want to add the leaning tower of Pisa, work on the phallic thing, more robots, etc...
The music is by Mice Parade off their latest 'bem-vinda vontade.' I've had his first album 'The true meaning of Boodleybaye' for 4 years, but only recently have gotten into it and I love it, it's my ideal music. It's an instrumental album but so relaxing. the latest one has vocals, but it's still relaxing, although I'd prefer just the instruments. I want to get the other albums. and that's my review.

The Sea & Cake - Nassau [1995]

Recorded by John McEntire at Idful Studios in Chicago, Nassau moves the band away from the more immediate pop leanings of their self-titled debut and sees them begin to experiment as a band in production and songwriting. Nassau was featured on many 1995 year end lists, moving the band into the spotlight and out of the shadows. Nassau lives up to the promise of their debut and raised the bar for things to come.

Rome - Rome [1996]

Rome is Richard Smith – bass, melodica, Elliot Dicks – drums, drum brain, Adam Gruel – synth. Rome is focused on space and depth in the literal sense. Richard uses several manipulative machines on his bass-delay, pitch shifter, electo magnet to alter not only the tone but the time. Adam recycles Richard’s live bass through a condenser mike on a cheap Yamaha sampler- originally designed as a toy to mess with short phrases- and then feeds the line through various effects, including delay. The results are gorgeously amorphous soundscapes undergirded by the familiar muscle of dublike bass lines. This textural exploration is not without for; however this form is far removed from the verse chorus verse more commonly found in rock. They do however retain the visceral energy of rock with the pulse provided by the drums of Elliot Dicks.
