Christina Carter - Original Darkness / Texas Working Blues [2008]

Christina Carter was born in the bayou city of Houston, Texas in November of 1968, and co-founded the group Charalambides there in December of 1991. Ever since then, she has deeply mined her own vein of sound-as-music with voice, guitar (both electric and acoustic), piano, and keys. For the past several years, Christina has utilized extended improvisational guitar passages within and without song-medley structures; re-contextualized certain Charalambides songs within the spare single guitar/voice form that birthed much of the group's music; and recently, investigated 'the song' as a thing unto itself, specifically concentrating on 'the word'- both in her own lyric writing and her interpretions of the work of other lyricists.

In addition to performing extensively in the US, UK and Europe as a solo artist, Christina has played and recorded in various groups and duos with Black Forest/Black Sea, Maria Chavez (as Weird Cookie), Loren Connors, Chris Corsano, Dredd Foole, Paul Flaherty, Gown (as The Bastard Wing), Shawn David McMillen, and Thurston Moore. She is also a permanent member of Babes On The Loose, Hot Assphalt, Scorces (with Heather Leigh Murray), Scorpiio Flower, Soft Hair, and Space(space)Child (a Spirit tribute band with Jessi Leigh Swenson).

Concurrent with her work as a musician, Christina has expanded her involvement in writing and visual art. Her poetry has been published by Digitalis Industries, The Ecstatic Peace Poetry Journal, Glass Eye, and Slow Toe Press. In 2007, her art piece Forever 21 appeared at Salon Mijangos in San Antonio, Texas as part of a concert/exhibit featuring Tom Carter, Warmer Milks, and Tetuzi Akiyama. Forever 21 was a labor of love and destruction- six of her handwritten diaries cut up painstakingly with scissors into miniscule pieces, which then filled a medium size yellow plastic shopping bag.

Christina currently resides in Austin, Texas. Her latest albums are the Charalambides CD Likeness (Kranky), the solo CDR Masque Femine (Many Breaths), and the solo CS Texas Blues Working (Blackest Rainbow). Her forthcoming releases are the solo CD Original Darkness (Kranky), The Bastard Wing CD To Contain Love (Ultra Hard Gel) which will both be released in the Fall of 2008, and the Scorces LP I Turn Into You (Not Not Fun) which will be released in July 2008. Also in 2008 she will publish Because Of Her In A Familiar Place (Many Breaths), a book of lyrics, poems and drawings.

Sensitive/Lethal CD

After last year's amazing 'Trees Outside The Academy' - his second album of solo songwriting - Thurston Moore takes a major look back into the noise arena with Sensitive/Lethal, an incredible three-part study in raw sound matter, utilising electronics and both electric and acoustic guitars. It's Thurston's unplugged activities that probably prompted the otherwise entirely ironic title 'Sensitive' for the first piece: buried under a maelstrom of extravagant feedback and yelping oscillator modulations a mantra-like open dreadnought chord lays down a foundation of clean, crisp steel string sounds, jangling excitedly like the beginnings of some unholy raga. After twenty-two minutes of this oddly beguiling punishment, the tone changes for 'Lonesome', a magnificent four-minute blast of stereo feedback cycles, sounding not unlike certain interpretations of Steve Reich's swinging mic piece 'Penduluum' - Sonic Youth's own version on Goodbye 20th Century springing most obviously to mind. Finally, 'Lethal' is a markedly less easily digested production, spewing forth analogue noise in all its myriad colours, with pure voltage controlled carnage in one ear and lacerating guitar in the other. There's still plenty of detail spread across the stereo field to make the piece an immersive listen though; after all, this isn't authored by just any old bedroom-bound tape jockey, but rather one of the founding fathers of noise rock and the modern American underground, so frankly it'd be surprising if this wasn't one of the very best noise albums of the year so far. Which it is, by the way.

**STRICTLY LIMITED PICTURE DISC** Thurston teams up with fellow indie heroes Mark Ibold (one-time bassist in Pavement and former Free Kitten associate) Sunburned Hand Of The Man drummer John Moloney and his ever-reliable Sonic Youth sparring partner Steve Shelley. Supposedly, somewhere on here is a rough demo of a soundtrack to an HSBC advert (which presumably never aired?) but you really wouldn't want to take out a mortgage with a finance house that'd endorse this kind of filth. It's not all noisy abrasion - you'll find acoustic sketches and other odds and ends of instrumental pieces that would fit in with some quarter of Sonic Youth's discography, or even some of Thurston's solo output - but it's full on abrasive noise that makes up a good 80% or so of this MIGHTY picturedisc. As ever, this is a man who proves himself to be equally adept with a fried bank of oscillators as he is an acoustic guitar, so there's no worry that these sonic misshapes are going to be lacking quality and thoroughness, but be warned that this is closer in spirit to Thurston's hurts-so-good Sensitive/Lethal album than it is to the songwriter stylings of Trees Outside The Academy. Don't forget though: this is limited to just 500 copies worldwide! No dawdling.

released january 28, 2008. gown (aka andrew macgregor and otherwise known as one-half of the bark haze with thurston moore) moved from western wassachusetts to nova scotia in mid-2007. before he moved, he wanted to have one big audio blow-out to remember the grand old mass times. with that goal in mind, gown went into the studio with the sunburned hand of the man gang (represented this time out by john moloney, sarah o'shea, ron schneiderman and taylor richardson) to melt some audio consoles. for the maples represents a portion of that recorded output and believe us, it's some massive stuff. sunburned's thick funk presents the perfect background for gown's shredding guitar-play. extremely hot stuff, especially the massive side-long "bending close." click here for a downloadable preview, "taylor's jam."

as per the three lobed standard, for the maples is pressed on 180g RTI vinyl. it is housed within silkscreened jackets (screen work by alan sherry / SIWA) bearing new artwork by gown. the record is from an edition of 698 copies and, and as an added convenience for our vinyl friends, will come packaged with a glass-mastered CD (not CD-R) of the material present on the wax. pre-ordered copies were accompanied by a bonus CD (TLR-059) of previously unreleased gown material.

El primitivo eco receptor que envuelve a los pétalos furtivos del gira sol se denota al horizonte con su ruidoso tonal de exclamaciones propias, autenticas sobre el actual derroche de basura en cada uno de los hogares hongo casa humanoides caóticos que siguen involucionando con su temor, un destello de luz que entra por la ventana cuadro de vidrios quebrados por las ramas que extiende su torso desnudo en la habitación, se protege irrefutable de los cuatro puntos sociales que menoscaban sus andanzas, sus añoranzas, que se yo?.

The mirror shows in each of these discs a deep attachment to the dip under unknown worlds, symbolic structure that represents a beginning full of tranquility to the future, only it plays with the hands exchanging molecules of floating powder with air, intense love of swallow that goes away, and I see her to go away with sadness, now every space vanishes to the complete silence, if you do not comment, we are not advancing and if the green stars that gave the current of the waters are not turned by it, to look for new planets.

Escuchar esta banda te resfresca el concepto de noise , ellos trabajan con saturaciones de guitarras perfectamente y composiciones energeticas al hueso. Se trasformaron en una de mis bandas favoritas y combustible de rock que enajena mis venas viejas , casi podridas por la sobredosis de sonidos masivos que estan dando vueltas y vueltas sobre la inconsiente década de los monos flojos (en tu bandeja encontraras buena músika , sin que tengas que respirar por los conductos del plástico derretido en tus fosas nasales, apoyado en la persepción, maquinando la autoevaluación con criterio constructivo).
Y que bien trabaja sonic... los maticez de los ritmos , abre ventanas visualisando la esperanza destruida y configura melodias en el kaos total y psikópata de sus enfermas cabezas para dar a luz un nuevo estilo de complot al circulo visioso que sociega a los que esperamos sin hacer nada...
