Nadja - Thaumoradiance / Desire in Uneasiness / The Bungled & the Botched [2008]

Canadian band Nadja played at the well-known Roadburn festival recently. I was not able to see them there, but fortunately founder Aidan Baker found some time to answer a few questions, while on the road between shows in eastern Canada. We were curious what it was like to work with a real drummer instead of a drumcomputer, and how to describe Nadja’s music the best.

You recently released a new album, ‘Desire In Uneasiness’, the first to be recorded with a live drummer. Is this a unique project, or will Nadja be a trio from now on?
This was a unique project, yes, but that doesn’t mean we might not be a trio at some point…

What made you decide to work with a drummer for this record?
We wanted to try something different, something with a more organic feel that’s difficult to capture with electronic drums.

You worked with Jakob Thiesen on this record. I read that the two of you have collaborated before in Whisper Room. Still, I think not many people will know who he is, can you tell us a bit about him?
I have performed with Jakob many times, both as a duo and with our trio Whisper Room – we have a collaborative record recently released on Waterscape Records called ‘A Bout de Souffle’. He has played drums with a few other groups, as well as recording more electronic/techno-based music under his own name. (Aidan at this point refers to Jakob's page from Discogs, which may give some more info on his work.

Does this mean that you will now do Nadja-shows with him?
Probably not, but it’s always a possibility.

It seems that using a drum computer has not prevented you from making music that has a very improvised feel. It does make it a bit harder to just try things in the studio. Can you tell us how a Nadja recording session used to be, and if it was different with a real drummer?
When we recorded with Jakob, we improvised/jammed and then took the recordings and edited and re-worked them, essentially building the songs that ended up on the album from the improvised raw material. Other albums have been recorded similarly, although we generally start with a very basic drumtrack and chord progression and then improvise over top of that, adding layers and textures until the song is ‘finished’.

Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker - Fantasma Parastasie [2008]

Fantasma Parastasie sees the pairing of Aidan Baker, of the Ambient Doom band Nadja, and Tim Hecker, two of Canada’s brightest musicians in the world of abstract electronic music.

Tim Hecker has been enjoying the rewards of a stellar career and discography, devoid of filler, due to his incredibly high quality control. His most recent full-length, Harmony in Ultra Violet, was viewed as a major release in the genre of experimental electronic music. Aidan Baker, on the other hand, works under very different circumstances, releasing material both as a solo artist and as a member of the duo Nadja. His prolificacy is on par with that of Merzbow and the late Muslimgauze. Thankfully, Aidan Baker is one of those musicians with the ability to record and write new music quickly and without sacrificing the quality of his art. Anyone familiar with both Aidan Baker and Tim Hecker is more than likely familiar with Alien8 Recordings as the two musicians have collectively released seven records for our label thus far. While Baker has collaborated with the likes of John Duncan, Black Boned Angel and Fear Falls Burning, among others, this marks the first collaboration to be released by Hecker.

This release, divided in eight movements, blends together to form a fluid example of a collaboration that works. Unlike those collaborations where artists throw some sound files back and forth via the internet, this release is the fruit of various real-time recording and mixing sessions the two artists worked on at Tim Hecker’s Montreal studio. The pieces on the record blend seamlessly into one another creating a deeper listening experience, as is the case on a number of Tim Hecker’s solo outings. While Baker and Hecker share a penchant for creating a powerful blend of ambient noise, “Fantasma Parastasie” finds the more dissonant elements tempered by an emphasis on ambience and even occasional melody.

This release is available on CD in a digipak packaging. A 500 copy, limited edition on white vinyl is also available. Both items can be pre-ordered in order to reserve copies.

Windy & Carl - Songs For The Broken Hearted [2008]

songs for the broken hearted

Cover Imagethis is an album about love. everyone has known love, and everyone has known loss. love is not just about warm fuzzy feelings, although that would be the part people say they like the best. and in any span of time, love changes and means different things to different people.

i never thought this would be an album. we started these recordings the same weekend i started I Hate People. it was a dark time, and when the tapes were taken off the reels i really thought that was the end of them. they were just going to sit and rot away somewhere.

but between christmas and new year of 2007, carl pulled them out and decided to finish them. he became obsessed with them somehow, i suppose in much the same way i had become obbsessed with finishing my own album earlier in the year. he worked every night for weeks, and as i wandered around the house i heard those songs everytime they played. and some of them made me cry, everytime. they sounded sad to me, because they were started in such a sad time. carl kept talking about wanting to have a new record out for 2008, and i told him only if it was named Songs For The Broken Hearted. he said fine, he just wanted it done.

so in early 2008 he gave me a cdr with what he felt were finished tracks, and asked me to write words for them. i had no ideas, i just kept crying when they were on. it really did not seem important to me to get them done because they only reminded me of things..........and then, one night, i started writing. i wrote words for 4 or 5 songs that night, and started singing the next evening. and we did rough mixes that i listened to for a week or so, and then i pulled out my journals, the gang of them that i had been filling since the fall of 2007, and i picked a few pieces that seemed like they would go with the music. i rerecorded some of the tracks with the new words, and resang some vocals i thought could be better. and the songs went from being all sad to being a reflection of how love works. how we are affected - by ourselves and others. how love makes you swoon and lonliness makes you cry. how when you love someone in this world you love them no matter where they are, and the connections you feel to and with them. love can make you blind, both when things are good and when they are not, and how do you react to being blind? what choices do you make and how do they change the world around you............

Thurston Moore - Built for Lovin' / Sensitive/Lethal [2008]

Sensitive/Lethal CD

After last year's amazing 'Trees Outside The Academy' - his second album of solo songwriting - Thurston Moore takes a major look back into the noise arena with Sensitive/Lethal, an incredible three-part study in raw sound matter, utilising electronics and both electric and acoustic guitars. It's Thurston's unplugged activities that probably prompted the otherwise entirely ironic title 'Sensitive' for the first piece: buried under a maelstrom of extravagant feedback and yelping oscillator modulations a mantra-like open dreadnought chord lays down a foundation of clean, crisp steel string sounds, jangling excitedly like the beginnings of some unholy raga. After twenty-two minutes of this oddly beguiling punishment, the tone changes for 'Lonesome', a magnificent four-minute blast of stereo feedback cycles, sounding not unlike certain interpretations of Steve Reich's swinging mic piece 'Penduluum' - Sonic Youth's own version on Goodbye 20th Century springing most obviously to mind. Finally, 'Lethal' is a markedly less easily digested production, spewing forth analogue noise in all its myriad colours, with pure voltage controlled carnage in one ear and lacerating guitar in the other. There's still plenty of detail spread across the stereo field to make the piece an immersive listen though; after all, this isn't authored by just any old bedroom-bound tape jockey, but rather one of the founding fathers of noise rock and the modern American underground, so frankly it'd be surprising if this wasn't one of the very best noise albums of the year so far. Which it is, by the way.

Built for Lovin' CD

**STRICTLY LIMITED PICTURE DISC** Thurston teams up with fellow indie heroes Mark Ibold (one-time bassist in Pavement and former Free Kitten associate) Sunburned Hand Of The Man drummer John Moloney and his ever-reliable Sonic Youth sparring partner Steve Shelley. Supposedly, somewhere on here is a rough demo of a soundtrack to an HSBC advert (which presumably never aired?) but you really wouldn't want to take out a mortgage with a finance house that'd endorse this kind of filth. It's not all noisy abrasion - you'll find acoustic sketches and other odds and ends of instrumental pieces that would fit in with some quarter of Sonic Youth's discography, or even some of Thurston's solo output - but it's full on abrasive noise that makes up a good 80% or so of this MIGHTY picturedisc. As ever, this is a man who proves himself to be equally adept with a fried bank of oscillators as he is an acoustic guitar, so there's no worry that these sonic misshapes are going to be lacking quality and thoroughness, but be warned that this is closer in spirit to Thurston's hurts-so-good Sensitive/Lethal album than it is to the songwriter stylings of Trees Outside The Academy. Don't forget though: this is limited to just 500 copies worldwide! No dawdling.

Merzbow - Dolphin Sonar [2008]

Author, activist, painter and sound artist Masami Akita had been at the foreground of experimental music for over 25 years. Inspired by psycedelic rock, free jazz, early electronic composition as well the physical arts, especial Kurt Schwitters'
Merzbau, Masami Akita has created a musical language all his own.

Dolphin Sonar is Merzbow's full length protest album against the annual brutal slaughtering of some 2,500 dolphins in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture Japan. This is an angry album full of beats, blasts and broken glass. Clattering smashes are pursued by by pulsing analog whirls like the heart of a dolphin being chased through the bloodied waters of Taiji. Filtered blasts of pummel and sound slaughter. Another Merzbow classic with the finest cover art money can buy by Jenny Akita. Liner notes from Captain Paul Watson.

Shalabi Effect

If only they were detonating atmospheric walls that between cross his sound by means of two opposite poles protected by the history of the humanity, it is when the fingerprint of the time leaves brands where to advance and to continue, the tonality of the wood that with work appears with beauty emerges, if only you were finding the way of moving away to listen, the echo that supports the natural secrets of the universe returns to be authentic and democratic, is the shade in the roof, it is the flight again, but she undresses the woman at a height of the stellar hills captivates the sense as these auditory instants to remember, gives drafts for your home(fireplace) subjective construction and jumps in the pasture or mud for mutant your feet in wind, wind that escapes without address trying to be God, to have the value and the force of giving it what him belongs, absolutely everything what exists inside the small room of the life, now your she writes, now I am an entity that supports experiments, Shalabi sounds, for routes of the didactic light.

Originally slated for release as the flip side of a split cd/lp with godspeed you black emperor! entitled Aural Florida, this release just kept growing and growing. Now finally finished and ready to go, the Shalabi Effect present their debut with a staggering 131 minute psychedelic blow out!

On this debut double CD somewhere in the vicinity of forty instruments have made their way onto the recordings. It is very difficult to describe Shalabi Effect, because the sound is varied and changing so frequently, but we can definitely trace influences of AMM, Organum, and Pink Floyd, and psychedelic music. In terms of Psych, we are talking about the brand perfected by the likes of Acid Mothers Temple, No Neck Blues Band and Ghost, as well as more pioneering projects such as Amon Duul, Popul Vuh and the Taj Mahal Travellers.

Anthony Seck, Sam Shalabi, Alexandre St-Onge and Will Eizlini are joined by various guests, including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Strawberry, filling in on violin, vocals, Tibetan bowls and sax. Together they blend middle eastern influenced folk with spacey electronics and really beautiful trippy guitars. The overall experience is incredible; sounds and styles change drastically and seamlessly, bringing you to a new place with each new movement. Shalabi Effect went all out, spending nearly a month in the studio recordings and mastering on 1/2 tape to capture the warmth of the music. We thought they were kidding when they said they were setting out to create the ultimate drug record. Now we know that they were serious. The first of the two discs opens up with a beautiful display of early electronic drones, Muslimgauze styled tablas, Oud, guitar, scraped metal and bowed instruments. The sound is so incredibly rich and organic, you could swear this was recorded somewhere beautiful outdoors.

Aside from the Shalabi Effect, Sam Shalabi either anchors or at least plays in the following projects: a trio with David Kristian and Alexandre St-Onge, and more… Shalabi’s free jazz duo Detention performed at this years Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville and he immediately returned to Montreal the following day to perform with Kevin Drumm and Pillow, as member of Molasses. Anthony is the other driving force in the project and is a film maker and video producer.

Shalabi Effect are one of the most important projects in the Montreal underground for the sole reason that it is Sam Shalabi’s main project. During the last few years Alien8 Recordings have been setting up challenging evenings of live music at a loft space run by GYBE!, the Hotel 2 Tango, as well as at other spaces. During that time only David Kristian comes close to having played in as many live scenarios as Sam Shalabi. We have had Shalabi Effect perform with the likes of Aube, Kevin Drumm, Pillow, Fly Pan Am, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Government Alpha, David Kristian, Sabir Mateen, Loren Mazzacane Connors, M.S.B.R., No Neck Blues Band, Pillow, Royal Trux and Martin Tétreault. Occasionally Shalabi will even book his own shows, including gigs with Tim Berne and Brandon Labelle. We are very happy to finally be able to share the music of the Shalabi Effect with people outside of the Montreal underground.

Shalabi Effect - On the Bowery

Lullabye Arkestra - Ampgrave [2006]

Lullabye Arkestra was formed in the summer of 2001 by Justin Small (drums) and Katia Taylor (bass) and are currently based in Toronto. Justin is also member of Do Make Say Think.

The Ark began by writing minimal, stripped down and raunchy rock songs using their signature fuzzed out bass sound and banshee vocals. They combined elements of hardcore punk with 60’s-era soul creating an unusual yet raw and energetic sound. That first summer they recorded "Bzaster", an 8-song CDR release which was self-produced with handmade covers and sold only at shows and a few select record stores in Toronto. For this recording they called upon Do Make Say Think members Ohad Benchetrit (saxophone) and Charles Spearin and Brian Cram

In 2002 Small and Taylor recruited Shelton Deverell (Tangiers, Z’Howndz) on organ. Deverell’s gospel-influenced style of playing added sweetness and density to the Ark’s sound. They began playing live with Benchetrit, Spearin and Deverell and also called upon Jason Baird (Do Make Say Think, Feist) for saxophone and Randy Ray and Marco Landini for backing vocals. From this point, Lullabye Arkestra’s live performances consisted of anything from two to twelve players. Other musicians who have since joined the band on stage are Julie Penner (Fembots, Do Make Say Think, Broken Social Scene) on violin, Bryce Kushnier (vitaminsforyou) on saxophone and keyboard, Joann Goldsmith (The Old Soul) on trumpet and Amanda Newman on trumpet.

Lullabye Arkestra’s soul-core sound is continuously evolving with influences from grindcore to garage, pummeling rock epics to soulful crooning, and rave-ups to throw downs.

Lullabye Arkestra are a bass and drum duo who've been playing and self-releasing glorious slabs of distorto-soul for several years. Formed in Toronto by Justin (drums) and Katia (bass), the Ark has played shows throughout eastern Canada as a duo and as a large band, adding horns, voices and organ. Their slow, swampy, overdriven cover of "Summertime" was an early signature tune, along with a clutch of original rave-ups ranging from one-minute combustions of riffage and hollering to longer, fuzzed-out R&B numbers, often marked by those sincere but sassy boy/girl call-and-response vocals that make everyone's day.

Their new album, and first for Constellation, is a knockout. Bursting with barely controlled chaos on some numbers, stripped back to sultry, art-damaged loversoul on others, Ampgrave is a hell of a good time, full of testifying and tenderness, see-sawing between massed instruments and the raw minimalism of the core rhythm section. Justin rounds up fellow Do Make Say Think players Ohad, Brian and Jason on horns and hollering, along with Shelton Deverell on organ and Julie Penner on violin. An additional 10-voice "Chorus Oblivia" of exuberant caterwaul also rallies to the cause.

Opening track "Unite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" explodes into a beautiful cacophony of horn vamps, crashing through ascending chord crescendos while screamo vocals punctuate the flight. "All I Can Give Ya" builds from a delicate exchange of devotional verses by Justin and Kat, towards a soaring, searing chorus. "Hold On" follows with another round of call and response vocals laid over a slow, pummeling soul groove, before bursting into it's distressed, desperate refrain. "Y'Make Me Shake" is entirely self-explanatory, and rounds out Side One. Our lovers continue to rock on the flipside, with the album's centerpiece lullabye "Come Out, Come Out" kicking things off. Three mighty tunes pile up from there, gaining crazed momentum until the final swirl of "Bulldozer of Love" segues into the four-on-the-floor anthematics of "Ass Worship". Hail! Hail! Rock n' roll. Ampgrave is blistering and beautiful CPR for the soul. Constellation is thrilled to serve up this platter of unabashed, unpretentious rock action. members (trumpets) who added to the soul-inspired songs.

Kawabata Makoto - Infinite Love [2002]

Your ears(hearing) estan destined to feel a sharp to tremble with eardrum and rock stairs working, for the sanctuary of the community of the soul that his wisdom opens in the master, creator of seconds free of fertilization in the progressive old man of mantras psicoassets, that they discover new paths where to look at the horizon, with his cigar of marijuana.

Kawabata Makoto

guitarist, performer on numerous traditional instruments, composer, improviser, mixing engineer, producer, leader of the Acid Mothers Temple, speed guru.

"Music, for me, is neither something that I create, nor a form of self-expression. All kinds of sounds exist everywhere around us, and my performances solely consist of picking up these sounds, like a radio tuner, and playing them so that people can hear them. However, maybe because my reception is somewhat off, I am unable to perfectly reproduce these sounds. That is why I spend my days rehearsing.
Where do these sounds come from? Who is sending them out? That is not something for me to know, and neither is there any way that I could find out. I simply believe that they come from the 'cosmos'. (Maybe other people would call God the source). Since I was a small child I have been prone to hearing ringing sounds in my ears and other sound phantasms. At the time, I believed that these were messages aimed directly at me from a UFO, and so I would gaze up at the sky. But once I started playing music myself, I came to feel that these noises were a kind of pure sound. And I promised myself that one day I would be able to play those sounds myself. It is only recently that I have begun to feel that I have been able to come close to reproducing these sounds in my solo guitar work, and in my INUI project.
However, in June of 1999, I finally discovered my own 'cosmos' and I experienced an instant of total union with it!! That 'cosmos' is still tiny in size - although any cosmos can, by its very nature, be infinitely huge or infinitely small. The energy and vibrations contained within that it far exceeded my imagination in scope and beauty. I can only describe the miraculous instant when my 'cosmos' accepted my consciousness as MAGIC."

Glenn Branca Ensemble - Symphony 8 & 10 - Live at The Kitchen (2004) DVDRip XviD

Avant garde composer/musician Branca emerged from New York's no-wave movement of the 70s. Although several contemporaries experimented with punk and deconstructed jazz, this artist advanced symphonies for guitar, wherein specially developed instruments ("mallet guitars") employed a radical tuning system to accentuate the intervals between "true" notes on a scale. Lesson No.1, issued on the pivotal 99 label, featured repetitive motifs, redolent of Philip Glass, but played with both dissonance and volume. The Ascension followed an equally challenging perspective, but furious bass and drum patterns tightened its rhythms. A collaborative album with poet John Giorno, Who Are You Staring At?, ensued, on which Branca's contribution, "Bad Smells", features music for a dance piece choreographed by Twyla Tharp. Branca was also commissioned to compose the score for Peter Greenaway's film The Belly Of An Architect (1986). However, he and the director quarrelled, and only seven minutes remain in the final soundtrack. During the 80s Branca established the Neutral label, which served as an early outlet for Sonic Youth. This innovative group was formed following the recording of Symphony No. 1, on which two future members, Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, participated. This association has continued on further recordings, helping to attract other adventurous rock musicians to the Branca fold. Swans bass player Algis Kizys was one of 10 guitarists guesting on Symphony No. 6, on which booming riffs were punctuated by mesmerizing keyboard fills. The World Turned Upside Down - A Ballet For Orchestra In 7 Movements featured the New York Chamber Sinfonia, exposing a poignant beauty in Branca's compositional technique. Symphony No. 10 For Massed Guitars, which received its world premiere in Britain in February 1994, restated the composer's infatuation with loud music.

Black Dice

Black Dice is an experimental electronica group currently based in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

They formed in spring 1997 soon after guitarist Bjorn Copeland met drummer Hisham Bharoocha at the Rhode Island School of Design. Joined by Bjorn's brother Eric Copeland on vocals and bassist Sebastian Blanck, their early sound has been described as thrash-influenced noise. They released several 7"s and embarked on a few brief tours before Blanck left the group and was replaced by Aaron Warren. In 1999 the band moved to New York City and began to experiment with their sound, with Warren and the brothers incorporating more pedals into their setup and slowly leaving their earlier hardcore-leaning style in favor of a more atmospheric. They are currently signed to Paw Tracks. The release of Broken Ear Record in 2005 and Manoman in 2006 saw the band innovating, incorporating elements of Afrobeat and breakbeat into their releases.

One side features the heaviest guitar-duelling bombast to come out of Bower’s paws since that mind-blowing Flower/Bower Sunroof track on the Mouthus/Double Leopards three-way on Music Fellowship, with martial percussion and the sound of pure voltage stapling the entire thing to the ceiling. Over on the flip it’s another non-stop vertical ascent, with fully-imploded guitar noise riddled with flickers of choral song. Highly recommended."

Zaimph, alias Marcia Bassett, made most of her music with a guitar, using e-bows and laying things across the string while she picked and sawed at it. She also held the microphone in her mouth for some vocals.
