F u r s a x a

Tara Burke of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania employs voice, guitar, organ, dulcimer, accordion, Casio and more to create her home-recorded acid folk as Fursaxa. Prior to her Fursaxa work she was an active ingredient in Clock Strikes Thirteen, Ted Casterline and his Perfectly Perfect Pieces of Fruit, UN, Her debut album Mandrake was produced, engineered, and released in Japan by none other than Kawabata Makoto of Acid Mothers Temple. She also self released the cd-r's Trobairitz Are Here From Venus, and The Cult From Moon Mountain. She has also contributed to these songs to the following compilations: Free My Mind (V/A Nice Pooper #23, zine 2001), Artemisia (V/A Sound Collector #7, zine 2001),
Kniphofia (V/A Surrounded By Sun, Fonal 2002), Porpoise Wings (V/A Hand/Eye, Hand/Eye 2002), Chartreuse My Green (V/A The Invisible Pyramid, Last Visible Dog 2003), and of course her piece for this issue’s cd as well. Her LP Madrigals in Duos on Time-Lag Records is due any time now, and presents Fursaxa at her finest musically with the gorgeous packaging we have come to expect from Time-Lag. She is also going to be part of the Jewelled Antler Library of 3" cd-r's, which makes perfect sense. Her sound combines folk, lo-fi, hashish smoke mixed with incense drifting out of a cathedral doorway, dreams that skirt the edges of nightmares, hallucinatory droning organic primitive sophistication.

Six Organs Of Admittance

Perhaps inspired by the east-meets-west solo guitar musings of John Fahey or Robbie Basho, former Plague Lounge guitarist Ben Chasny formed Six Organs of Admittance in 1998 in northern California. Six Organs’ self-titled, self-released debut was released that year, followed by various compilation tracks and obscurities. In 2000, Six Organs released the Manifestation EP on Ba Da Bing! records, a one-sided clear vinyl-only release consisting of one extended piece (it was reissued by Strange Attractors on CD in 2004 with extra music) , and featuring female vocals and varied percussion accompanying the centerpiece of Chasny’s guitar. Also in 2000, Dust and Chimes was released, first as a limited edition by Pavilion, and then in an expanded run by Holy Mountain. The second full-length from Six Organs, it featured raga-like guitar work surrounded by bells, chimes (as the name implies), drones, and Chasny’s multi-tracked, chant-style vocals. In 2003 Casny began an association with Comets ON Fire which led to him becoming a full time touring and recording member of the band. He also released COmpathia with Holy Mountain and two titles for Time-Lag a CD reissue of 1999’s limited edition Nightly Trembling and the landmark For Octavio Paz. After recording and touting extensively with Comets On Fire in 2004, Chasny returned to to the studio and issued the moving and beautiful «{School OF A Flower» on Drag City in January of 2005. ~ Jason Nickey and Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

Lau Nau

Last year saw an explosion & all too welcome interest in a vital, tightly knit scene of artists from Finland. Out of the communal circle of prodigious Finnish musicians comes this lovely 10 song debut solo outing of abstract folk, stray kiss lullaby & plucked blues by Laura Naukkarinen (vocalist in Kiila, Päivänsäde, The Anaksimandros). Sung in her native tongue, Kuutarha intimates a secret language outside traditional word speak into something utterly beautiful & unrestrained. Melody is suggested through the contours of voice, guitar & violin and arrangement has less to do with the placement of things than with Lau's comfort in letting sounds fall where they may. Line up: Laura Naukkarinen (acoustic bass, bass recorder, five-stringed kantele, acoustic guitar, tenor recorder, violin, bamboo flute, colorful juice glasses, mortar, mandolin, witch laugh megaphone, baby's rattle, bike bells, banjo, cowbells, electric guitar, organ, willow whistle, tablas, percussion, cymbals, comb, beer cans); Pekko Käppi (tamboura, jouhikko).

Nukkuu (Finnish for Sleeps) is the long awaited sophomore album by celebrated Finnish folk fave Lau Nau. Nukkuu is psychedelic, abstract & emotionally captivating. Nukkuu is an album of changes.

In the years since her debut album Kuutarha, Laura became a mother, moved to the Finnish countryside and took valuable time to carve out a space for her enchanted art in the new found tranquility of her remote surroundings.

Conceived in tight attics & vacant dens on off hours when her young son Nuutti was fast asleep, this is an intimately crafted 9 song collection that unfolds like dreamlike musical ribbons for the senses and delivers the listener to a place of unhurried contentedness.

Digipak cd & deluxe gatefold 180 gram vinyl will be n stores May 13, 2008.

Death Chants

In the center of the city, aiming with a finger at the Moon, I list to departing course to the infinitely possible, so human thing, a good-bye, the sound tuning in in breathing and onlooker to look for a kiss of heated woman who waits for you beyond, to the precise instant in which you it see, gradual pencil playing of oil in the fabric, sexual colors, mantras of good, search!!
In contemplative state, music that the psychedelic decorates with details as brought of the stars, entity androgynous
that it(he,she) is born on every disc for Death Chants, a recollection that comes from the future without it(he,she) is obvious, sinister, dark, fractured of fragile movements that disappear in your hearing.
