"Take Me Home - a Tribute to John Denver" - features Bonnie Prince Billy, Low, Tarnation, The Innocence Mission, Rachel Haden (from that dog), Sunshine Club, Hannah Marcus, Granfaloon Bus, James Hindle and Red House Painters.
Red House Painters frontman, Mark Kozelek, compiled this remarkable collection of popular and obscure songs of John Denver. Each song was recorded specifically for this tribute.
As John Denver was a supporter of animals, a portion of the proceeds will benefit Pets In Need - a non profit organization dedicated to bringing loving, healthy homes to adoptable animals. They strongly support the movement called "No-Kill."
"My idea for this record is to take artists that are less likely to be associated with John Denver, have them open up a new audience to his songs, and give exposure to his popular as well as less known but significant work."
- Mark Kozelek

It's funny that almost everything I've heard Will Oldham to this point has been rather depressing. Sure, there are some bright moments on a couple of the Palace Music records, but his turn as Bonnie 'Prince' Billy on I See A Darkness is one of my favorite melancholy recordings ever laid down and doesn't reflect one ounce of light. Imagine my surprise, then, when I hear All Most Heaven and it sounds happy. Not only is it a surprise to me, but a very good one at that.
Although it runs only 15 minutes long, this release is one that would win over most people on name-dropping alone. While the main singers are Rian Murphy and Oldham, the musical arrangements are by Jim O'Rourke and Archer Prewitt had a big hand in the background vocals. Not only that, but David Grubbs, Bill Callahan, Edith Frost, and Laetitia Sadier make appearences among others. It's a damn indie rock hotsheet lineup and although the music isn't anything that hasn't been done before, it's super enjoyable and just a plain excellent little release.
The four songs on the album follow sort of a natural progression and start out with "Fall Again." Made up of a nice arrangement of organs, guitars, bass, piano, strings, and a touch of horns, it's a jaunty little track that fits perfectly with the very odd lyrics (that actually are in all the tracks). At first, I wondered if I was just hearing them sing wrong, but upon looking at the lyrics sheet, I realized that they yes indeed did just say, "they boge in do bo/when you call the name/of they sing or they/I bmal bahl." It's like a bit of Anthony Burgess' Clockwork Orange-speak thrown in to real English and it works very well with the lush, almost baroquey sounding arrangements by O'Rourke. The third track "Song Of Most" goes with a more string-driven track again and with a backing chorus that includes Sadier (of Stereolab), the lyrics of "We held upon a biggun daddy/hates to, the song fall on/the gable/ah ee stood ape-hole" seem still manage to sound somewhat regal.
The short EP ends with the slower "Song Of All" and the light horns, guitar and piano arrangement close things out nicely with vocals by Oldham (as well as a chorus of several backups). Overall, it's a very short release and probably more for those who've already heard work by those involved (but chances are you have given everyone that had a hand in the release). Musically, it's very nearly perfect with very full sounds and varied instrumentation, and even with the sometimes undecipherable lyrics, it makes for a nice little musical morsel.
You will have to raise the unit of the matter with the colouring landscapes that Roy Montgomery's music offers you, he guards carefully the directions in order that then you cross with knowledge of the astral territory in which if you decide to unload these links you will have the pleasure of experimenting, out of the designed times, the contemplative attitudes in liabilities were forging a planet in which you will be able to take food and then to cultivate for the next visit, it shows always thank you in the shape of commentary, inside " In the Freezer of your Conscience ", because of this form if one of these links dies, I will have time myself of turning it to rising, now he enjoys.
1-Speed Bike is the DJ and mobile soundsystem alter-ego of Aidan Girt, drummer for Montreal-based bands Exhaust and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Making his first appearance remixing tracks on an ancient 12-bit AKAI sampler for Exhaust’s debut record, 1-Speed Bike went on to build a large sample bank sourced from his own live drumming and made a full-length album (with full 16-bit resolution) for Constellation in 2000. He has also moshed things up at numerous street actions and benefits over the years, and has gone on to release a series of records on Broklyn Beats. Aidan was a member of the Montreal Anarchist Bookstore collective and lived in Amsterdam for a while before settling into a cabin in the woods outside Montreal, where he continues to speed things up and slow things down at his home studio.
If only they were detonating atmospheric walls that between cross his sound by means of two opposite poles protected by the history of the humanity, it is when the fingerprint of the time leaves brands where to advance and to continue, the tonality of the wood that with work appears with beauty emerges, if only you were finding the way of moving away to listen, the echo that supports the natural secrets of the universe returns to be authentic and democratic, is the shade in the roof, it is the flight again, but she undresses the woman at a height of the stellar hills captivates the sense as these auditory instants to remember, gives drafts for your home(fireplace) subjective construction and jumps in the pasture or mud for mutant your feet in wind, wind that escapes without address trying to be God, to have the value and the force of giving it what him belongs, absolutely everything what exists inside the small room of the life, now your she writes, now I am an entity that supports experiments, Shalabi sounds, for routes of the didactic light.
Originally slated for release as the flip side of a split cd/lp with godspeed you black emperor! entitled Aural Florida, this release just kept growing and growing. Now finally finished and ready to go, the Shalabi Effect present their debut with a staggering 131 minute psychedelic blow out!
On this debut double CD somewhere in the vicinity of forty instruments have made their way onto the recordings. It is very difficult to describe Shalabi Effect, because the sound is varied and changing so frequently, but we can definitely trace influences of AMM, Organum, and Pink Floyd, and psychedelic music. In terms of Psych, we are talking about the brand perfected by the likes of Acid Mothers Temple, No Neck Blues Band and Ghost, as well as more pioneering projects such as Amon Duul, Popul Vuh and the Taj Mahal Travellers.
Anthony Seck, Sam Shalabi, Alexandre St-Onge and Will Eizlini are joined by various guests, including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Strawberry, filling in on violin, vocals, Tibetan bowls and sax. Together they blend middle eastern influenced folk with spacey electronics and really beautiful trippy guitars. The overall experience is incredible; sounds and styles change drastically and seamlessly, bringing you to a new place with each new movement. Shalabi Effect went all out, spending nearly a month in the studio recordings and mastering on 1/2 tape to capture the warmth of the music. We thought they were kidding when they said they were setting out to create the ultimate drug record. Now we know that they were serious. The first of the two discs opens up with a beautiful display of early electronic drones, Muslimgauze styled tablas, Oud, guitar, scraped metal and bowed instruments. The sound is so incredibly rich and organic, you could swear this was recorded somewhere beautiful outdoors.
Aside from the Shalabi Effect, Sam Shalabi either anchors or at least plays in the following projects: a trio with David Kristian and Alexandre St-Onge, and more… Shalabi’s free jazz duo Detention performed at this years Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville and he immediately returned to Montreal the following day to perform with Kevin Drumm and Pillow, as member of Molasses. Anthony is the other driving force in the project and is a film maker and video producer.
Shalabi Effect are one of the most important projects in the Montreal underground for the sole reason that it is Sam Shalabi’s main project. During the last few years Alien8 Recordings have been setting up challenging evenings of live music at a loft space run by GYBE!, the Hotel 2 Tango, as well as at other spaces. During that time only David Kristian comes close to having played in as many live scenarios as Sam Shalabi. We have had Shalabi Effect perform with the likes of Aube, Kevin Drumm, Pillow, Fly Pan Am, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Government Alpha, David Kristian, Sabir Mateen, Loren Mazzacane Connors, M.S.B.R., No Neck Blues Band, Pillow, Royal Trux and Martin Tétreault. Occasionally Shalabi will even book his own shows, including gigs with Tim Berne and Brandon Labelle. We are very happy to finally be able to share the music of the Shalabi Effect with people outside of the Montreal underground.
Mice Parade was originally the solo project of New Yorker Adam Pierce, who has also played in Swirlies, The Dylan Group, HiM, múm, and Philistines Jr.
From its outset, Mice Parade showed a boldly inventive, highly individual take on post-rock / electronica. Following 1998's Bubble Core album, 'The True Meaning Of BoddleyBaye', their first FatCat album, 'Ramda' (‘99), forged a distinctive, immersive audio space of piled-up percussion and atmospheric, hook-laden melodics. 2001 saw the release of a third album, ‘Mokoondi’, which marked a shift in the Mice Parade sound, including the increased influence of Eastern harmonics and African beats, and the formation of a proper band of musicians. What started out as a studio project has since developed into a full touring band, based around a two-drumkit rhythm section, with HiM’s Doug Scharin on the other kit. Also in accompaniment are vibes, violin, classical guitar, rhodes piano and old synths, and a variety of acoustic / world instruments, forging Mice Parade into a seriously talented, energetic live unit.
'Focus On The Rollercoaster' was released in December 2003, followed sharply by the LP, 'Obrigado Suadade', the following month. This album, Mice Parade's third for FatCat, saw the band moving into poppier, more accessible terrain, with Pierce introducing full vocals for the first time, including contributions on several tracks by Kristin from múm. The subsequent LP, 'Bem-Vinda Vontade' expanded this theme, albeit with more sonic emphasis on FX driven indie-rock guitars. Featuring guest vocals from Letitia Sadier and Kristin Valtisdóttir, Mice Parade's most recent eponymously titled offering, could be seen as a refined take on the ground made over the previous two, merging folk-tinged electronica with the ‘Loveless’ era swoon of My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic subtlety of Can, and the opaque melodic experiments of Brian Eno. Yet as ever, Mice Parade’s sound is essentially modern, informed by an esoteric palette, retaining a familiar acoustic presence via an uncliched take on folk/world influences.
This would have been a lot more exciting if you could see what I was painting. An action painting would have been better. You can see what I've added: a ship, the Taj Mahal and I worked on the castle. I want to add the leaning tower of Pisa, work on the phallic thing, more robots, etc... The music is by Mice Parade off their latest 'bem-vinda vontade.' I've had his first album 'The true meaning of Boodleybaye' for 4 years, but only recently have gotten into it and I love it, it's my ideal music. It's an instrumental album but so relaxing. the latest one has vocals, but it's still relaxing, although I'd prefer just the instruments. I want to get the other albums. and that's my review.

On the surface the exagerate philanthropists slip, cause the coalition of fail exploratory, his malajusted curiosity mutant is kept almost perpetual in the tuning in of the musical dictation to the back of the galaxy, strange labyrinths with key elements forgotten in the soil find the third eye to return to the calmness, and I appear of coming, you know that everything is false, the light damages of white what you believe to sow the tree while it grows to his slow time, increasingly highly, there they were putting his backs, to see the exit, only that this time any change, my old father now plays in the horizon with the machines of the time and thinks about her, thank you, for the life.

Stoner Rock .......!!!!!!!!!
