Rachel Goswell

Rachel Goswell (born May 16, 1971 in Fareham, England) is a singer-songwriter who was a vocalist with shoegazing pioneers Slowdive. Following Slowdive's dissolution, Goswell joined Slowdive alumni Neil Halstead and Ian McCutcheon to form Mojave 3, an indie pop/dream pop outfit. This new band also included Simon Rowe (of Chapterhouse fame) and Alan Forrester.

The year 2004 saw Goswell release solo recordings with co-writer Joe Light and producer David Naughton. Nine months after Mojave 3 released Spoon and Rafter, she released The Sleep Shelter EP. Waves Are Universal, her first full-length recording, appeared a month later. In 2005, a limited edition remix 12" (now available as a download) entitled Coastline / Plucked was issued. This recording, released on Valentine's Day, features two mixes apiece from The Earlies and Ulrich Schnauss.

Goswell was married to Cuba's Christopher Andrews from 1994 until 2000.

While on tour with Slowdive in 1993, one of her eardrums burst, and it has troubled her ever since, in the form of persistent infections, partial deafness (which she employs a hearing aid to correct) and ataxia. This has prevented her from performing on occasion, and she was absent from the last Mojave 3 album, 2006's 'Puzzles Like You'.

Will Oldham - Seafarers Music Ep [2004]

Back in print! A stunning collection of instrumental guitar experimentations, this mini-album was originally issued in early 2004, and now hits the shelves again thanks to overwhelming demand. It would be hard to criticise a man with so many amazing releases, and this record adds another notch to the belt of Will 'Bonnie Prince Billy' Oldham. Composed as the soundtrack to a documentary about Sailors, Oldham's beautiful and whistful fingerpicking seems to perfectly place you in the seafarers realm even without visual accompaniment. Using guitar riffs to drift over each other and crash much like the waves of the Atlantic, there is something nostalgic about this music, the recording and the immediacy that strikes you out straight away. Any fan of Oldham's back catalogue and also any follower of classic film soundtracks should certainly give this unassuming record a few moments of their time.

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic is a singer and guitarist who was born in Montreal, Canada. She "writesraw, uncompromising gothic folk/blues music with modern dissonances and timeless catharsesand has been unleashing her devastating voice in chillingly controlled doses around town for a few years now."

Cyann & Ben - Spring / Happy Like An Autum Tree / Sweet Beliefs [2003 / 2004 / 2006]

..> CYANN & BEN release their first album for Ever Records on September 11th. SWEET BELIEFS is an epic and yet intimate album that gives the space rock template a Gallic makeover by adding a much needed romantic grandeur. CYANN & BENs Paris is not the one you see in Amelie its dirty, dark and stressful as much as beautiful and SWEET BELIEFS, with its multi-layered and ambitious sweep, sounds as unsettling as it is irresistible. "a slow motion hurricane ripping apart your temporal lobe" Magnet /// "...a rare strain of "epic" music, where bravado does not exceed the composition, but remains at all times within it. Cyann & Ben are masters of this subtlety."

Maserati: x 4

"I have never been one to steer clear of hyperbole, and so it is with great pride and conviction that I embark on this over- the-top endorsement of what may well be the greatest band to ever call Athens home. From their early days as post-emo-reformed-math experimenters, Maserati showed promise, but with last year's addition of dynamo Jerry Fuchs (who for my money is the greatest living rock drummer), the group embraced the misunderstood and oft-maligned universe of psychedelic rock, introducing a healthy dose of Pink Floyd and Can to their already compelling prog-punk mix. Drunk on the power of this newfound experimental freedom, Maserati continues to evolve in ways their built-in hipster audience might not fully appreciate but lovingly laps up all the same."

Shalabi Effect

If only they were detonating atmospheric walls that between cross his sound by means of two opposite poles protected by the history of the humanity, it is when the fingerprint of the time leaves brands where to advance and to continue, the tonality of the wood that with work appears with beauty emerges, if only you were finding the way of moving away to listen, the echo that supports the natural secrets of the universe returns to be authentic and democratic, is the shade in the roof, it is the flight again, but she undresses the woman at a height of the stellar hills captivates the sense as these auditory instants to remember, gives drafts for your home(fireplace) subjective construction and jumps in the pasture or mud for mutant your feet in wind, wind that escapes without address trying to be God, to have the value and the force of giving it what him belongs, absolutely everything what exists inside the small room of the life, now your she writes, now I am an entity that supports experiments, Shalabi sounds, for routes of the didactic light.

Originally slated for release as the flip side of a split cd/lp with godspeed you black emperor! entitled Aural Florida, this release just kept growing and growing. Now finally finished and ready to go, the Shalabi Effect present their debut with a staggering 131 minute psychedelic blow out!

On this debut double CD somewhere in the vicinity of forty instruments have made their way onto the recordings. It is very difficult to describe Shalabi Effect, because the sound is varied and changing so frequently, but we can definitely trace influences of AMM, Organum, and Pink Floyd, and psychedelic music. In terms of Psych, we are talking about the brand perfected by the likes of Acid Mothers Temple, No Neck Blues Band and Ghost, as well as more pioneering projects such as Amon Duul, Popul Vuh and the Taj Mahal Travellers.

Anthony Seck, Sam Shalabi, Alexandre St-Onge and Will Eizlini are joined by various guests, including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Strawberry, filling in on violin, vocals, Tibetan bowls and sax. Together they blend middle eastern influenced folk with spacey electronics and really beautiful trippy guitars. The overall experience is incredible; sounds and styles change drastically and seamlessly, bringing you to a new place with each new movement. Shalabi Effect went all out, spending nearly a month in the studio recordings and mastering on 1/2 tape to capture the warmth of the music. We thought they were kidding when they said they were setting out to create the ultimate drug record. Now we know that they were serious. The first of the two discs opens up with a beautiful display of early electronic drones, Muslimgauze styled tablas, Oud, guitar, scraped metal and bowed instruments. The sound is so incredibly rich and organic, you could swear this was recorded somewhere beautiful outdoors.

Aside from the Shalabi Effect, Sam Shalabi either anchors or at least plays in the following projects: a trio with David Kristian and Alexandre St-Onge, and more… Shalabi’s free jazz duo Detention performed at this years Festival International de Musique Actuelle de Victoriaville and he immediately returned to Montreal the following day to perform with Kevin Drumm and Pillow, as member of Molasses. Anthony is the other driving force in the project and is a film maker and video producer.

Shalabi Effect are one of the most important projects in the Montreal underground for the sole reason that it is Sam Shalabi’s main project. During the last few years Alien8 Recordings have been setting up challenging evenings of live music at a loft space run by GYBE!, the Hotel 2 Tango, as well as at other spaces. During that time only David Kristian comes close to having played in as many live scenarios as Sam Shalabi. We have had Shalabi Effect perform with the likes of Aube, Kevin Drumm, Pillow, Fly Pan Am, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Government Alpha, David Kristian, Sabir Mateen, Loren Mazzacane Connors, M.S.B.R., No Neck Blues Band, Pillow, Royal Trux and Martin Tétreault. Occasionally Shalabi will even book his own shows, including gigs with Tim Berne and Brandon Labelle. We are very happy to finally be able to share the music of the Shalabi Effect with people outside of the Montreal underground.

Glenn Branca Ensemble - Symphony 8 & 10 - Live at The Kitchen (2004) DVDRip XviD

Avant garde composer/musician Branca emerged from New York's no-wave movement of the 70s. Although several contemporaries experimented with punk and deconstructed jazz, this artist advanced symphonies for guitar, wherein specially developed instruments ("mallet guitars") employed a radical tuning system to accentuate the intervals between "true" notes on a scale. Lesson No.1, issued on the pivotal 99 label, featured repetitive motifs, redolent of Philip Glass, but played with both dissonance and volume. The Ascension followed an equally challenging perspective, but furious bass and drum patterns tightened its rhythms. A collaborative album with poet John Giorno, Who Are You Staring At?, ensued, on which Branca's contribution, "Bad Smells", features music for a dance piece choreographed by Twyla Tharp. Branca was also commissioned to compose the score for Peter Greenaway's film The Belly Of An Architect (1986). However, he and the director quarrelled, and only seven minutes remain in the final soundtrack. During the 80s Branca established the Neutral label, which served as an early outlet for Sonic Youth. This innovative group was formed following the recording of Symphony No. 1, on which two future members, Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore, participated. This association has continued on further recordings, helping to attract other adventurous rock musicians to the Branca fold. Swans bass player Algis Kizys was one of 10 guitarists guesting on Symphony No. 6, on which booming riffs were punctuated by mesmerizing keyboard fills. The World Turned Upside Down - A Ballet For Orchestra In 7 Movements featured the New York Chamber Sinfonia, exposing a poignant beauty in Branca's compositional technique. Symphony No. 10 For Massed Guitars, which received its world premiere in Britain in February 1994, restated the composer's infatuation with loud music.

Growing

Growing evolved out of two bands, Joe Denardo from Black Man White Man Dead Man and Kevin Doria from 1000 A.D., in Olympia, WA. in the fall of 2001. Joe Denardo moved from Chicago to Olympia and helped operate the Thin The Herd label with Zack Carlson, which released early material from Vaz and Total Shutdown. Eryn Ross joined to make Growing a trio. Moving from hardcore towards something slower and more expansive the band played around it's hometown and up and down the West Coast of the United States. The first Growing release was a 7 inch single on the Nail In the Coffin label.

Growing played in a variety of settings and contexts, from art gallery to hardcore all-ages shows. The group has arranged quadraphonic sound installations and lugged stacks onto a stage. Growing have made soundtracks for videos (most recently a project for continuous two channel video and multichannel sound installation with Lisa Darms) and often play accompanied by Denardo's photographs. Growing self-released a number of cassettes of music.

After a tip from Paul Dickow of Strategy, who played a show with Growing and was struck by their quadraphonic sound environment, kranky began the process of releasing the debut Growing album in spring 2003. The Sky's Run Into The Sea came out in August 2003. As Denardo described the recording process, "We recorded the record with a friend, so the atmosphere was very laid back and cheap, this was long before kranky decided to put it out. It took place over three months over three months, but mostly because of equipment failure. Since it was winter it rained a lot."

Otis Hart described the nature of the band's music in Dusted: "Reach for an initial word, a label - say Doom Metal - then watch, as the demonic guitars slowly morph into demonstrative bliss. Drone may come a bit closer to the truth, but only slightly, as silence plays an equally significant role in the proceedings. Alas, Growing's anomalous sounds dwell in perpetual nigh-fidelity, permeating the gaps between equalizer settings with evasive intent, frustrating any attempr at optimization, and therefore, classification."

After the release of their debut longplayer Growing toured the West and East Coasts. The band is moving their base of operations to New York City. Animal Disguise Records is re-releasing tour tapes and a double cassette, two channel album called Above/Below Sea Level. Heroine Records in Italy is releasing a split CD/LP with Growing and M. Evan Burden (of Get Hustle). In March 2003 Growing will play shows in California with Chicago instro-metal overlords Pelican in preparation for a split release on the Hydra Head label. And in spring 2004 Growing journey to Portland, OR to mix their next album at Magnetic Park with Rex Ritter of Jessamine/Fontanelle at the board.
