"A Screamfest FREE screening at MONSTERPALOOZA!
Saturday, April 13th, evening 10:30 pm
AMERICAN MARY
Medical student Mary Mason. is broke and disenchanted with the medical field. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries leaving more marks on her than her so called 'freakish' clientele. Directed by The Soska Sisters."
"It’s less than two weeks away now boys and girls! FrightFest the 13th is literally just around the corner. So as we try and get ourselves and you, our loyal readers, pumped for the festival, I continue the feature Ian so brilliantly started when he looked at Federico Zampaglione’s duo of Shadow and Tulpa.
This time I’m focusing on the Soska sisters, whose second feature American Mary, plays on the Monday morning in the main screen. But first of all, let’s check out their now fan-favourite debut, Dead Hooker in a Trunk."
"Fans of horror since childhood, the Soskas are tuned in to the right frequency of gore and comedy. The script has its fair share of snappy dialogue proving they obviously know their audience incredibly well – most probably because they are that same audience."And what to expect from the new child?
"The one thing the Soska twins showed us with Dead Hooker was potential, and even though the previous film was a decent outing from the pair, I believe the issue of budget meant that they couldn’t fully reach that potential. But with American Mary, and what looks like a bigger budget, this could well be the opportunity they need that puts the filmmakers’ on the horror map. Staying behind the camera on this occasion, which I think is a good choice, it allows the twins to properly focus on the story and not worry about anything else. And with film surrounding underground surgeries and body modification, they have a chance to take it into many dark and disturbing places."
"I've just returned from the Cannes Film Festival where I saw loads of movies and went to glamorous red-carpet premieres! I felt completely out-of-place amongst all the fanciness and was even a little worried I'd just sorta stand out as a rube, but luckily I fooled those frogs. I really fooled 'em! I even got to walk the Palais red-carpet at the famous Lumiere Theatre wearing formal attire to attend the premiere of horror legend Dario Argento's new movie Dracula 3D, which is a total hoot. The best movie I saw while I was there was something called Beasts Of The Southern Wild. It is sooooooo good and sooooo beautiful and the wee little child actress who plays the lead, "Hushpuppy", is incredible. Definitely go see this movie when it hits theaters soon. Loved it!!! I also saw some fun horror movies like American Mary and Excision and I stayed in a villa with mice that Roman Polanski stayed in for four consecutive years. The whole experience was tres bien!" -Peaches Christ

Sole surviving poster. Hope she's still up tomorrow. Probably not.
Torn poster. Ignorance couldn't rip through heavy duty tape.
More destroyed posters. The sad reality that people take things for surface value rather than what's actually there in front of them. Ironically, the film is facing the same-close mindedness from these individuals as the people they are 'protecting' do.
The more things change the more they stay the same

"Dead Hooker In A Trunk had its premier which was excellent by the way"
"Day two starts off with an Intro by Abertoir stalwart Nia Edwards-Behi for the engagingly titled “Dead Hooker in a Trunk”, a film which I’ve read a lot about on various social networking sites (such as this one) so I was excited to see if it lived up to its internet hype and its awesome title. I’m glad to report that the film exceeds both.
The natural evolution of grindhouse exploitation films, without resorting to adding aging effects to the footage, “DHIT” delivers on its tease of sleaze, muscle cars and ultraviolence. But its also a film with real heart, as you genuinely grow to care about the characters. Directed with amazing confidence by the Twisted Twins themselves, the Soska sisters, the only criticism I can muster is a muddy sound mix, which sometimes detracted from the fun on screen. That being said if you’re yearning for a mix of “Switchblade Sisters” and “Weekend at Bernie’s” then look no further!"
"Halloween is over but you can still find something scary in San Diego. Here's a preview of the inaugural Horrible Imaginings Film Festival playing this Saturday at the Tenth Avenue Theater beginning at 1:00 pm.
If you're a horror fan like myself and are counting the 361 days left until next Halloween then here's something to make the wait a little easier: Horrible Imaginings Film Festival. The film festival serves up horror features and shorts both old and new as well as two floors of artwork. This celebration of horror is the brainchild of Baltimore transplant Miguel Rodriguez, who saw a need for more horror in San Diego and decided to try and fill it."
"What people can expect from the film festival," says Rodriguez, "is people can walk around, meet other people who are like-minded and like the same type of genre. They will be able to expect artwork of dark or macabre nature, and also a number of films including two classics that are being screened over the course of the 12-hour period.
Twelve hours may sound like a long time to spend in the dark getting scared but the festival is broken up into two halves representing two different kinds of horror.
"I wanted to showcase how the horror genre can bring out different ways that people communicate fear," Rodriguez explains, "And that could be either from a psychological way or from a more visceral way."
"The enticingly titled "Dead Hooker in a Trunk." (I mean how can you resist a film with a title like that!)
"It's a very fun kind of grindhouse film," says Rodriguez who can't help but smile at the mere mention of the title. "Just go for the ride. Turn the brain off and have a lot of fun."
The film was made in Canada by identical twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska, and the female characters they play are anything but passive victims. The film is an uneven, ultra-low budget project fueled by wild energy and do-it-yourself inventiveness."
"October is over, but thank you Blood Bath folks for understanding that doesn't mean we need to put horror films to bed till next Halloween . Oak Cliff's historic Texas Theatre gets a little gory November 13-14 when Blood Bath 2: The Film Festival puts on two days of "a celebration of independent horror cinema showcasing feature and short films from around the world." The festival is the world premiere for the feature films Kodie, filmed locally in Dallas by Abel Berry and Jennifer Stone, and The Super. It's also the American premiere of feature film Fell.
There's an after party Saturday night at the Muddy Waters (4314 Live Oak St.) with special musical guests Jack O'Hara Harris, The Lash Outs, and The Whiskey Folk Ramblers starting at 10 p.m. Tickets to the fest are $7 per feature-length film, $15 per day, or $25 for the weekend."
"KODIE tells the story of David, a paranormal investigator, who has come to a point in his life where everything he cares about is being ripped away in domestic turmoil. He soon finds himself and his team caught in a world of a murderous little girl named Kodie in the form of a teddy bear. Many of the cast and crew will be in attendance for a Q&A following the film."
"Canadian twins Jen and Sylvia Soska's DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, which has become an underground cult fan favorite while winning many awards at festivals all around the world"
"Forget so-called 'film festivals' that show movies on a tiny screen in a cheesy hotel conference room. Dark Carnival is a week-long celebration of horror, featuring art exhibits, live entertainment, merchandise vendors, special guests and more. But most of all, we're all about the movies!
We screen the best indie horror films from all over the world in the best possible venues - a vintage 1930s era movie theater that features state-of-the-art sound and projection equipment, on a 30 by 20 foot screen."
"Bob & Barbara's, owned by Jack Prince (former partner of JJ's Grotto) maintains its position as one of Philly's most authentic and funky Jazz venues. Although an extensive menu of chili dogs and chips is now available for your dining pleasure, the accent is on the music and good times. A racially mixed bar, Bob & Barbara's is the classic organ lounge. Tenor man Nate Wiley has passed, but The Crowd Pleasers jam Sunday nights until 2:00 AM. Drinks are a little more expensive during music sets, but not enough to break you. It's downright cheap, so long as you lay off the Courvoisier. Since B&B has been "discovered" Fridays and Saturdays tend toward the familiar repertoire (Misty, Satin Doll, and lowdown blues) which Nate describes as "liquor drinkin' music". If you're looking for a more straight-ahead boppish vein, come when the art students have left, for the jam sessions"
Sundays, they host a jam session. Veterans and newcomers alike are allowed as many choruses as will please the crowd, and no more. Less experienced players are tolerated, even encouraged, but never coddled.
There is an eclectic mix of music on other nights, and even a drag show on Thursdays. A welcome oasis on an otherwise somewhat desolate block of South Street."
