Blood Guts 5 New Faces of Horror
"Over the last 4 decades we’ve had Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper and David Cronenberg amongst others, carrying the flag for horror and bringing a genre that hadn’t really peeked since the monster movies of the 30’s and 40’s back into the eyes of cinema goers. Bringing with them blood, franchises and above all characters that have been feared and loved ever since.
Since then Hollywood has had a merchant for remakes and bringing back the dead to films that have had dozens of sequels and trying hard to replicate their success. Unforetunatley, while the remakes and new visions for films made for a previous generation bring in money for the studios, we’ve seen it all before with real prosthetics and not the new wave of CGI laziness.
Amongst the regurgitated shmuck, there are some gems arising in the horror scene that many will overlook due to the advertising of famous killers of yesteryear but let there be no mistake, where Carpenter gave us Myers, Craven gave us Freddy and Scream, Sean S. Cunningham gave us some of the best in cheap, filthy horror including Jason Vorhees and Hooper gave us the infamous Leatherface, over the next generation there will be more film makers creating their own legacy and placing themselves in the Horror Hall of Fame."
HUGE FUCKING HONOR ALERT! Blood Guts has made a list of the 5 New Faces of Horror which includes the ridiculously talented Ben Wheatley (KILL LIST, SIGHTSEERS, ABCS OF DEATH), Adam Green (HATCHET, FROZEN, GRACE), James Wan & Leigh Whannell (SAW, INSIDIOUS, DEAD SILENCE), James Watkins (EDEN LAKE, WOMAN IN BLACK), AND Jen and I - hence the 'huge fucking honour' alert.
"The Canadian twins have made a name for themselves as the new Queens of Horror within the underground thanks to grindhouse cult classic ‘Dead Hooker in a Trunk’.
The modest film written, directed, produced, starring, and stunted by the twins was made on a modest budget thanks to Robert Rodriguez book ‘Rebel Without A Crew’. With the twins love for horror and grindhouse their determination and artistic direction led to the film receiving great applause at several film festivals and becoming a cult hit.
After the release of the film, the twins set up their own production company ‘Twisted Twins Productions’ in which they have begun their legacy to bring horror from the back of Hollywoods alley to the forefront of Cinemas screens.
Making several short films with the new company, the twins set about writing a new feature length and pitching the idea to several big name horror directors including Rob Zombie, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino to name a few, it was none other than gore fest ‘Hostel’ director Eli Roth that took to the twins nad after seeing a few ideas, requested the script to ‘American Mary’, “The one about the med student”.To the twins surprise as this was their most ‘twisted’ idea they put the script forward and got ‘Ginger Snaps’ star Katharine Isabelle gripped from the first page. The most shocking of all was having the backing of none other than Monster house Universal take up ‘American Mary’ for distribution rights. Showing the film at Film4’s FrightFest in London, the film has been highly rated by even the harshest of film critics claiming the film ‘original’ and ‘fresh’ in a stale market where story takes the backseat to gore and torture-porn.
With this, not only have Jen and Sylvia Soska had two hit films in their filmography of 2, but they already have cogs in the works for future projucts ‘Bob’ and ‘The Man Who Kicked Ass’."
Check the whole awesome piece here!
A very humble thanks to the team at Blood Guts for including two crazed Canadian twins on their list. This is like being included in the horror royal family and we will make sure to work very hard to keep such a privilege.

Daily Grindhouse Decrees Dead Hooker as the Best Film of the Year!!
"HEY BASTARDS.
Damn. Was this a good year for film or what? There were easily 20 or so other films I could have tossed up here but I went with the tried and true formula of the Top 10. Now, the rules of the game; The Best Film of The Year was given to the film we were most impressed with, the one we couldn’t wait to watch again, the one that smacked us square in the geek. As for the other 9, they’re in no order of importance although I will say the last film on the list will be in heavy rotation for a long, long time. Now let’s get ramblin’ and see what kind of trouble "
I read on and I see DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. I look to see where I am on the list. I stare. If I had a higher fibre diet and took better care of myself, I would have shit my pants. Daily Grindhouse which has been a staple in our household for the flicks we love has just bestowed the biggest motherfucking honour by dubbing DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK the Best Film of the Year. These guys know their flicks, we adore their taste, and now I have the biggest fangirl grin on my face that has no hope of leaving.
"Jen and Sylvia Soska created an ambitious film that gave the finger to popular DIY convention. DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is 100% exploitation that knows its roots but never relies solely on the shock of the situations. It knows it’s force but doesn’t stand around for 90 minutes beating you up and leaving you bleeding on the road. It’s a well-balanced film that clicks along at a fast clip, using dialogue like bullets, never wasting a single moment."
In case I was a bit subtle earlier. I love the team at Daily Grindhouse. If this is the first you are hearing of them, you're welcome for the intro and I apologize for the hours you will spend like a bewitched zombie reading their articles and falling more deeply in love with your favourite flicks and finding new ones to obsess over. Click here to catch up on wicked interactions with DG.
"The Soska twins know their film history; they know what works and what doesn’t work. They have studied people like Robert Rodriguez and have taken notes about how to get the most bang out of your independent buck, and this bastard looks like a million dollars. DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK has been watched at DG HQ 3 times now and each time it gets better and better. Each time something else is picked up that I dig even more than the viewing before. This film is a fucking blast and I can’t wait to see AMERICAN MARY, the Twisted Twins follow up to DHIAT. They just bought themselves some giant shoes to fill."
Jen and I cannot thank you enough for this. When we created DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK it was so that it would be seen by a group of people like you that grew up on the flicks we did and wanted to have some insane fun back in their flicks. I am so happy that we did not disappoint and we promise you this - AMERICAN MARY is going to be like nothing you've ever seen before, in the most best of ways.
Now, dear reader, who is fucking radcore for reading these blogs (like a boss), read the entire article here and check the 9 Other Flicks That You Need To See, if you missed them, you totally have some catching up to do! It's like homework except it doesn't suck ass - quite the opposite.

Hayes Hudson's House of Hooker
"DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK wins two awards from me. First off, it wins my award for best title ever! Second off, it wins my most unexpectedly enjoyable film of the year. Not to say I didn't think I would like this film, but I just really didn't know much about it and being the Soska Sisters first feature film, I had my concerns. Well, you would never know this was a first feature from the directors. I enjoyed this film more than I thought I would for sure."
- Hayes Hudson, House of Horror
Like the best people on the planet, Hayes has always loved horror (and alliteration for that matter - double cool points) and his fucking fantastic (alliteration) site is there to share that love. It's like two people marrying for love rather than bucks and perks - you can't fake the real thing and it's an absolute pleasure to check his stuff. Yes, I creeped his site - I'm not too much of a creepo to admit it.
When Jen and I came up with the idea for DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, it was a flashy fuck you for (alliteration) the 'film school' that ripped us off and squandered what should have been the budget for our final project. It was a fake trailer in the realm of the multi-collaborative and ridiculously underrated GRINDHOUSE flick which truly was all the film school we needed. That and like every 'Ten Minute Film School' Rodriguez ever made. The excitement over the fake trailer led to excitement for a feature and it was our main priority to make something crazy and fun that you could turn your brain off and laugh like a moron to for 90 minutes. The format - well, we were making a chick road trip flick with a very visible love for the flicks we grew up loving.
"As I stated before, it is very hard to categorize this film. It definitely has a lot of dark comedy elements to it, and reminded me a bit of the (very underrated film in my opinion) VERY BAD THINGS. But don't worry, you gore hounds will have something to enjoy as well, as there is a LOT of blood in this film and some crazy scenes involving a dismembered arm and someone losing an eyeball. That is all I will say about those things, as I don't want to spoil all the surprises for you."
Thank you so kindly to Hayes for taking the time to check out our HOOKER in his house of horror (alliteration) and writing such a cool piece on his thoughts on the flick. VERY BAD THINGS - dude, I love it when the leads get fucked up. Too often they are miraculously unscathed and where's the fun in that? Please clickity click here to the whole piece and see if this HOOKER is for you! (answer: yes it is)

Carlos Gallardo Interview with Daily Grindhouse
Without a huge budget.
Even today, most people would scoff at the idea of making a movie with a mere couple grand, but these gentleman proved it was possible. And not only was it possible to make a movie with a modest budget, they proved they could make a damn good movie.
Their story has rightfully become legend. How two friends made a film together without a huge crew, huge budget, and little more than a whole lot of talent and a kick ass concept about a man with a guitar case filled with guns.
Definitely not an interview to miss. Please enjoy the FULL DAILY GRINDHOUSE INTERVIEW here and do share it with your fellow filmmakers. They'll thank you or should if they know what's good for 'em.
Please enjoy the interview and get your butts out there and make your own film!!
Bloody Best!

Good Day, Hooker!
You know, Robert Rodriguez has a lot to answer for. His Grindhouse films Planet Terror and Machete have inspired a new generation of independent film-makers wanting to turn their own twisted ideas into full-fledged features. Take Canadian director Jason Eisener for example. His Hobo With A Shotgun (didn’t the Daily Mail just love it?) is a carefully crafted homage to the action exploitation genre and boasts a standout performance from the one and only Rutger Hauer.
Then’s there’s the Soska sisters. Armed with their film-making bible, Rodriguez’s Rebel Without a Crew, the twins maxed out their credit cards to fund their own Grindhouse-inspired vision – Dead Hooker in a A Trunk.
-Pete's Peek
This is an excerpt from a fantastic article from Pete's Peek talking about tonight's DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK television premiere screening in the UK. Click here for the entire lovely article and tune in tonight to see this indie flick hit the small screen for the first time! Here is a little more motivation from Peter of Pete's Peek on Movie Talk --
Intentionally ridiculous, Dead Hooker is bloody good fun – but you have to suspend your belief from the outset. So don’t expect any logic – just sit back and enjoy one Hell of a ride.
The biggest, craziest, most humble, thank you to you reading this blog, you who heard about this flick and shared it with your friends, you who reviewed it, you who took the time to chat with us, you who become our dearest friends, thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You made this possible with your support and by demanding that it be seen. Please tune in tonight!
This is the continuation of the big release. As promised, HOOKERS for everyone!

Dead Hooker in Four Rooms
We absolutely love Robert Rodriguez. His work has inspired us so greatly, he taught us how to make a flick on no budget creatively, he is an independent filmmaker God. This is something I used to watch over and over and over. A personal favorite please enjoy.
I think this moment was so hilarious to me like DIRTY WORK and VERY BAD THINGS - love a raunchy dark comedy.

Hobo With A Shotgun and Dead Hooker In A Trunk Double Feature ONLY in Texas
Once upon a time, in a crappy film school not too far away, two twins found themselves frequently leaving class. Were they bad students? Were they "too cool for school"?
Quite the opposite in fact.
They wanted to learn about film. Not being stimulated or supported or inspired in the least, they went to where we all fell in love with film, the movies. At the time a little double billing was making the rounds. Though it was met with mixed reviews (opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one), they knew that this very special double billing could teach them more about film making than anything happening inside those school walls.
Of course, these twins were none other than we Twisted Twins.
And the double feature? Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez's GRINDHOUSE, featuring Robert's PLANET TERROR and Quentin's DEATH PROOF.
And I don't have to tell you that these men are without a shadow of a doubt two of the greatest living film makers in the world. If you disagree, kindly walk yourself into my fist as I don't like to exert too much energy smackin' a fool.
But cinematic Gods Rodriguez and Tarantino weren't the only ones to come out and play in this epic double billing... Oh, no.
GRINDHOUSE quite famously had a healthy serving of awesome fed to hungry film goers in the form of "faux trailers". Directors included the coolest Jew since Jesus, Eli Roth, rocker turned badass director, Rob Zombie, the brilliant Brit behind numerous comedic gems, Edgar Wright, and one Jason Eisener, Canuck extraordinaire who birthed the now world renowned HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN.
As most of you know, we were very inspired by this HOBO. To think a Canadian film maker could play with the big boys? We made our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK originally as a faux trailer in hopes of perhaps making it into GRINDHOUSE 2, should such a happy day have come to pass. But, our path went in a different direction and our DEAD HOOKER, like so many youths before her, grew up before our eyes and became a full length feature. She's hit the festival circuit, made many friends of horror fans and reviewers alike, won numerous awards and praises, and now she's being released to the world. On May 23rd, the lucky folks in Australia and the UK can bring her home at LONG last and we'll be making an official announcement on when the rest of the world can cuddle up with our girl.
But there's more...
I'm sure you're saying, "dammit, Jen, we know this already!" and you should. What you don't know is the point to this lil' blog that I've been crawling towards at a snail's pace.
DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK premiered to the USA in the first annual WOMEN IN HORROR month (brain child of our beloved Hannah Neurotica of Ax Wound Zine) compliments of DOA Blood Bath Entertainment's Andrew Rose. Andrew has been a friend of our Hooker from the very beginning. When he learned that the Texas Theatre in Dallas was running HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, he saw an opportunity for a match made in independent, horror lover, Canadian heaven. What if DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK could play with HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN?
No need to ask "what if?", my friends. It's a reality. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN and DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK will be playing together ONE NIGHT ONLY at the Texas Theatre in Dallas May 30th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(No, there aren't enough exclamation marks in the known universe to properly express my epic joy and excitement.)
Here's the story...
This is going to be one for the history books. I know not everyone in the world lives in Texas, but I'm telling you truly, IF you can find any way to be there, do it.
It's going to an absolutely epic event and we will be doing everything in our power to make this one of the biggest and bestest (yes, that's totally a word) events to ever grace the planet. TWO Canadian films that hit the world hard despite the overwhelming odds and obstacles. It truly is a triumph for both film, independent artists, and the people who love cinema and horror.
I want to extend our most heart felt gratitude to both Andrew Rose and theatre creative director Jason Reimer for making this impossible dream a reality.
And will the Twisted Twins make an appearance? Now, that would really make it one for the history books. You'll just have to wait and see ;)
Please spread the good word, boys and grrls. There's nothing we love more than the horror community. After all, together we're an army.
Bloody Best!

Exclusive Twisted Twins interview with Kotori Magazine!!
"Sometimes the truly creative hand us a movie whose title packs as much punch as the movie itself, luring us in and giving us not only what title promises, but more coolness to spare. Hot Tub Time Machine, Killer Klowns from Outer Space and Natural Born Killers spring to mind. In 2009 Jen and Sylvia Soska- two Vancouver film school drop-outs- wrote, produced, directed and acted in their own hometown horror-comedy, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and the fruit of their labors is every bit one of those aforementioned pictures.
They delivered on the title, albeit without the putrefaction we so loved from the dead hooker in the mattress in Robert Rodriguez's "Misbehavers" short (from the anthology Four Rooms), and they yielded a 92-minute hodge-podge of heightened gore, deadpan gags and solid, admirably rough-and-tumble female leads with lines like, 'You think dying's gonna kill me?'" ~ Bob Freville, Kotori Magazine

Elizabeth Avellan
"I just try to live the best I can, you know, and do the best I can everyday. Hopefully, inspire some people to try everyday. Everybody has a different path, everybody a different journey, they come from different places." -Elizabeth Avellan
If you've met her, you already know. If you've seen any of the movies she's been involved in, you might already know. Elizabeth Avellan is an American Producer and like many producers, doesn't get the same attention that maybe your A-List actors or action filled films may. Which films would those be? Glad you asked - she has produced: EL MARIACHI, DESPERADO, FROM DUSK TIL DAWN (and both sequels), SPY KIDS 1,2,and 3D, SIN CITY, GRINDHOUSE, MACHETE, and many more. Sounding familiar? Well, you may already know her as Robert Rodriguez's former wife and mother of their five children (Rocket, Racer, Rebel, Rogue, and Rhiannon), they separated in 2008. What you might not know is how driven, strong, ambitious, talented, and inspirational she is - allow me to tell you.
"To be a role model is kind of great. Somebody can look at you and say I can do it. You may do it a different way than I did but it's important to have done it and say I can do it, too." -Elizabeth Avellan
Elizabeth was born in Caracas, Venezuela, where her grandfather, Gonzalo Veloz, was the pioneer for commercial television. She was thirteen years old when she left for Houston, Texas with her family where she would later graduate from Rice University and have her first taste of behind-the-scenes production from working as a stage manager and props master/mistress. In 1986, she moved again, this time to Austin where she would work in the Office of the Executive Vice-President and Provost of the University of Texas, and continue her studies in film production, art, and architecture. It is also where she would meet her future husband.
Elizabeth worked as an animator on BEDHEAD - Rodriguez's award winning and critically acclaimed short, she co-founded Los Hooligans Productions when the two started work on EL MARIACHI, she was inducted into the Texas Film Hall of Fame on March 9th, 2007, was the first recipient of the of the 1st annual Ann Richards Award, she is the co-owner of Troublemaker Studios - which has made over 14 movies that have made over nine hundred million dollars at the box office with hundreds of millions more in DVD and video sales, not to mention that the studios has made Austin the 'Texas Hollywood' and given film making opportunities to hundreds of locals.
What's next for Elizabeth? More films and an expansion with Trouble Maker Studios. With Robert and Elizabeth making their own films in Texas, there will be twice as much opportunity and film work in Austin. Before now, Elizabeth has been behind the scenes, not too in the spotlight. Shockingly, there was a list for the 'Latino Power 50' that showcased fifty of Hollywood's male and female Latino talent that didn't even acknowledge Elizabeth on the list. Robert was number 3 and she wasn't even mentioned in his article. Sometimes the truly deserving get overlooked - hopefully with this new direction in her career and a focus on her own projects, Elizabeth Avellan will become a household name, so little girls can grow up dreaming of wearing suit dresses and doing business with the Weinsteins.
I am amazed at her professionalism. In a situation where tabloids and gossipy types were foaming at the mouth for a dirty, scandalous divorce, we get two adults acting like adults and being professional. I see loving and fun parents. I see a woman not speaking emotionally about the past, but looking at the situation as a positive for her community because there will be more productions and opportunity to work.
"He can make his movies here, just like I can make my movies here. It’ll be good for Austin: if I bring a movie in, and Robert does a movie too, this place will be much more used. People can say, ‘Oh, it’ll never work.’ And I’m like, ‘You know what? It’ll work.’ I’m excited at the prospect of showing them — of showing the world what I do.” -Elizabeth Avellan
On a personal note, EL MARIACHI inspired us and taught us to make our own movie - modestly and creatively. This amazing woman and the team that worked together on that film changed my life with their film. They changed the game and gave indies power and life. I look very forward to her next project. I hope one day I can find a way to work with and learn from this incredible woman. It's people like this that get me so excited about the industry today. Tomorrow will be a rad day.
