Dead Hooker Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap & Right

Ben Bussey's latest for Brutal As Hell - DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP: When Microbudget Horror Gets It Right. And fucking awesome - our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK makes the cut!

Dead Hooker in a Trunk (Jen & Sylvia Soska, 2009)
Production budget: $2,500
I rather doubt this film or its writer-directors require any introduction at this point. However, I’ll be the first to admit that on seeing the film at its world premiere over two years ago, I was initially dismissive of it, owing largely to that knee-jerk reaction to DV that I spoke of earlier. It was only when I took a step back that I realised just how much Dead Hooker In A Trunk breaks with conventional wisdom. Where so many first-time filmmakers restrict their action to a single location and a minimal cast, the Soskas keep things moving at all times, hopping locations as gleefully as they cross genre boundaries.
Once again, good writing and acting really saves the day, but it certainly doesn’t hurt that there are stunts and special effects which are significantly above average for films made at this budgetary level, not to mention how good CJ Wallis’ soundtrack is.

Fucking awesome to be included on a list with some great indie gems like: ABSENTIA, BLOOD CAR, SMALL TOWN FOLK, COCKHAMMER, and COLIN. Check out the whole rad piece here.

And if you haven't heard of or seen these flicks - go ahead and treat yourselves, they will renew your love of the genre with the fine work of these filmmakers! Thank you to Ben for getting the word out about these films.

In The Killing Boxx

Killing Box (noun) - a military maneuver that entails surrounding an enemy on all four sides in order to massacre them; another term for abattoir or slaughter-house.
Independent (adjective) - not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct; not subject to another's authority or jurisdiction; not relying on another or others for aid or support.

Art (noun) - the quality, production, expression, or realm, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful, appealing, or of more than ordinary significance; human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.

Grim (adjective) - not to be placated or appeased or moved by entreaty; ghastly, shockingly repellent; inspiring horror; black: harshly ironic or sinister; admitting of no appeasement or compromise.

Simply put, we're independent artists; artists whose sensibilities lean toward the grim. Why? Because we're paying attention.

In the KillingBoxx you will find awesome, informative, and witty articles written about horror and indie horrors that don't get talked about as much as they should. It's a rad site of a like-minded artist community. In the KillingBoxx shirt you will fell comfy.

Starting the Year Off Awesome with Beth at Bleedfest

Missed BLEEDFEST? Oh, C'MON!! We totally told you about it WAY in advance. If you're in California, shame on you. If, however, you're in some distant corner of the world (much like ourselves...), here's the next best thing to having actually been there.

Beth Accomando, you may recall her downright gore~geous pics posted in our PENNY DREADFUL DIARY from the HORRIBLE IMAGININGS HORROR FILM FESTIVAL OF SAN DIEGO. You can see that post and drink in a hard, but satisfying shot of radness HERE. It's cool, I'll wait. This entry will be waiting for you when you return.

All done? Welcome back to the party. See? I told you Beth rocks. And, she was also in attendance at this past BLEEDFEST.

As promised, here's the next best thing to having been there yourself. Allow Beth to take you through the festival. What was hot? What was so very not? Her writing is not only insightful and beautifully written, it is also bullshit free. Check out the festival through her eyes HERE.

And get ready for the NEXT BLEEDFEST IN FEBRUARY!! Why's it so special? Well, aside from BLEEDFEST being chalk full of wickedness, it will be a very special WOMEN IN HORROR month edition. That's right, boys and grrls. Start hitch hiking to the West Coast now...

Jen

It's Your Turn, New Hampshire!!

Brutal As Hell presents DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK! Watch the fuck out, New Hampshire. Our Dead Hooker is headed your way!!

Here are the delicious details...

"Indie Horror/Exploitation Night at Harlow’s Pub in Peterborough NH – Saturday October 23rd – 10 PM

It’s a night of demons, druggies, punk rockers, dead hookers, and church youth group. What? A church youth group?

That’s right – This Saturday night at 10 PM, drag your undead corpse to Harlow’s Pub in Peterborough NH for a night of killer horror, brought to you by BrutalAsHell.com.

Starting at 10PM we’ll be screening a twenty-minute short film – NIGHT OF THE PUNKS. Directed by Dan Reisser of the popular E! Entertainment show, The Soup, Night of the Punks promises loads of over the top gore and comedy in a throwback style to the great splatter films of the 80′s.

Then we roll into our feature flick. A film so perverse we can hardly utter its name. Well… okay… we will anyway. DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is a modern exploitation film featuring a pair of twisted twin sisters, (who are completely unalike in every way except for their looks), their junky friend, and a bible toting youth group dork as they plummet from one mishap into another all because of a Dead Hooker in a Trunk! Written and directed by the Soska Sisters, “Dead Hooker” has been all the rage amongst horror fans this year and has been gaining critical acclaim. It’s not one to be missed!

The cost of admission? Only your soul! That’s right. This screening is free to the public, which means more money for beer! Show up at Harlows early to grab a bite to eat from the kitchen (which closely promptly at 10), hobble your way downstairs to where we’ll be rolling these incredible films. Bring your friends, bring your enemies, just come out on in droves.

Harlows Pub
is located at 3 School Street (at the corner of Grove St) in Peterborough NH.

Visit www.HarlowsPub.com for more information..."

I hope you all are able to make it out and we look forward to hearing what you think of the film! C'mon, boys and grrls. It's FREE ;)
