American Mary and Twisted Twins in the Province

"Twin Vancouver writer-directors Jen and Sylvia Soska are being hailed as horror’s next big thing as they surf a bloody wave of fan and peer acclaim for their indie horror hit American Mary.

The movie stars Katharine Isabelle (the pubescent werewolf of 2000’s Canadian cult hit Ginger Snaps) as Mary, a med student who pays the tuition with fetish-scene body-modification surgeries, and then takes an even darker turn after a betrayal by one of her med-school profs.

“Basically if you ever make a woman mad, that’s what goes through her head,” said Sylvia during a visit to Burnaby’s Masters FX, indicating a limbless male torso that hangs in a glass case. “She just says she’s fine.”

The twins’ feminist twist on horror’s traditionally male mad scientist had Britain’s Guardian newspaper calling the film: “a post-feminist chimera ... with heavy splatterings of Saw-like sadism but a healthy measure of intelligence, too.” "

The Twisted Twins with Glen Schaefer of The Province at Whistler Film Fest

"Twin writer-directors Jen and Sylvia Soska pushed some buttons at the Whistler Film Festival with a late-night screening of American Mary, their thriller about a med student who drops out to do black-market body-modification surgeries.
Walk through the Whistler village centre with the self-styled Twisted Twins, and they stand out like a pair of ravens at a Canada Goose convention, as they have a good cackle about the wholesome mountain types who walked out in the movie’s first half.

It’s been such a long time since we’ve had a quiet audience, or people walking out,” Jen says. The two just returned from a cross-country tour of Australia before Whistler, and earlier screened the film at festivals in Europe and the U.S. Whistler was the B.C. debut for the Vancouver-filmed movie.

They’re  not used to having extreme content, not that I would call American Mary having extreme content,” Jen says.

Indeed, if the film draw winces, it’s more through implied violence and gore.

Clearly, the Soskas clash with the Whistler vibe – the pair even got lost a couple of times."

The Whistler Film Fest Is No Time For A Coat!

"Vancouver filmmaking twin terrors Jen and Sylvia Soska won’t be on the slopes.
“I’m more a professional hot-tubber,” says Jen, who with her twin wrote and directed American Mary, which stars local fave Katharine Isabelle as a disillusioned med student who finds a cringe-inducing new career in the underground body-modification scene.
The twins have been a hit on the global genre festival circuit, storming stages from the U.S. to Europe and Australia, in their matching PVC outfits. American Mary opens the festival’s late night terror fest program.
“It’s a bit of an American Mary reunion,” Sylvia says. The pair filmed the movie in a speedy 15 days just over a year ago. “Most of the cast and crew are coming up there ... when you have 15 days to shoot everything, you get extremely close — I really miss those guys.”
Sylvia says American Mary costume designer Enigma Arcana whipped them up a closet full of eye-catching gear starting with an earlier festival appearance alongside horror icon Elvira.
“She said she had to give us something a little low cut and sexy, otherwise no one was going to pay attention to us next to Elvira,” Sylvia says.
The twins are both nursing head colds after all that travelling, but they say that won’t affect their wardrobe choices.
“I have some nice thigh-high boots,” Sylvia says. “I don’t think anyone’s coming to see us in coats. We’re already sick so I don’t see it getting much worse.”
Which sounds more like work than play, poor gals."

American Mary Comes Home to British Columbia's Own Whistler Film Festival

"With apologies to Rocky Horror, the year’s Whistler Film festival has its own late-night double feature.
Vancouver-based twin sisters and writing-directing partners Jen and Sylvia Soska are opening the festival’s midnight madness program Nov. 28 with their new horror movie American Mary.

I visited the self-styled Twisted Twins onset more than a year ago when they filmed the movie, which stars local cult-indie fave Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, Insomnia) as a disillusioned med student who finds work in a bizarre underground fetish scene, doing body-modification surgeries.
Also in the movie’s corner is B.C. make-up wizard Todd Masters (True Blood, Twilight: New Moon), so there will be blood and strange prostheses.
Since they wrapped, the movie has drawn raves at genre festivals in the U.S. and around the world, but Whistler will mark the movie’s home-province debut."

THAT'S RIGHT, WEST COAST!! American Mary makes her home Province debut - 11pm opening night at the Whistler Film Festival!!

Twisted Twins rock on in The Province

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!

It's a very festive time for all with that whole Christmas thing going full speed ahead since the day after our much beloved Halloween season came to an end. And today is a VERY special day. Three years ago, on December 11th, we incorporated our company, Twisted Twins Productions.

We've come a loooong bloody way to get to where we are and we have to thank from the very bottoms of our Twisted little hearts the friends, family, friends who have become family, fans, crew, and cast that we've had the esteemed pleasure of having in our lives. We are incredibly humbled to be doing what we love and cannot thank you all enough for the kindness, support, and belief you've had in us and our work.

And we promise we're just getting started...

And what better way to celebrate this gore~geous day than from the set of our new beast, AMERICAN MARY. Glen Schaefer of the Province was kind enough to come visit us on set. He's one of the few to have been on location of our newest film that we've been extremely tight lipped about.

Please enjoy the FULL STORY right here!

And check out the on set video RIGHT HERE!

If you're a fellow Vancouver-ite, go grab yourself a copy!!

And thank you all~!! We fuckin' LOVE you and cannot wait to share AMERICAN MARY with the world.

Bloody Best!

A LITTLE NEWSPAPER FOREPLAY

Last Friday we made our very first newspaper print on page A2 of the Province. We even beat the Cheeky Ground Squirrel (who appeared after us on page A3). Yes, our short parody for the MTV Tarantino Basterdization Contest got our work aired on international television. We made the Top Three and, thanks to all the support from our fans and supporters, we are getting some publicity.
Today we sit down with Glen Schaefer, of the Province, for a more in depth chat. More to come!
