Appearances Are Everything in Creating Mary Mason
With a tagline like ‘Appearances Are Everything’ - everything about AMERICAN MARY had an huge emphasis on look and presentation. One of the biggest points to hit was our Mary Mason to give her an iconic look, that 1950s glam with surgically stunning attire. Scream Siren Magazine goes into the look of Katharine Isabelle as stunning Mary Mason from makeup to Enigma Arcana’s genius wardrobe in their new issue’s ‘Beyond the Screen’ style section.
”Horror Style Culture. Our mission is to focus on Independent and Foreign Horror films, women in the horror industry, events, edgy artists, killer style and “diy to die for”. We are the essential go-to source for all things horror and culture for women across this zombie infested planet. 10% of each print issue sold will be donated to charities that help women survive and succeed.”

The Whistler Film Fest Is No Time For A Coat!
"Vancouver filmmaking twin terrors Jen and Sylvia Soska won’t be on the slopes.
“I’m more a professional hot-tubber,” says Jen, who with her twin wrote and directed American Mary, which stars local fave Katharine Isabelle as a disillusioned med student who finds a cringe-inducing new career in the underground body-modification scene.
The twins have been a hit on the global genre festival circuit, storming stages from the U.S. to Europe and Australia, in their matching PVC outfits. American Mary opens the festival’s late night terror fest program.
“It’s a bit of an American Mary reunion,” Sylvia says. The pair filmed the movie in a speedy 15 days just over a year ago. “Most of the cast and crew are coming up there ... when you have 15 days to shoot everything, you get extremely close — I really miss those guys.”
Sylvia says American Mary costume designer Enigma Arcana whipped them up a closet full of eye-catching gear starting with an earlier festival appearance alongside horror icon Elvira.
“She said she had to give us something a little low cut and sexy, otherwise no one was going to pay attention to us next to Elvira,” Sylvia says.
The twins are both nursing head colds after all that travelling, but they say that won’t affect their wardrobe choices.
“I have some nice thigh-high boots,” Sylvia says. “I don’t think anyone’s coming to see us in coats. We’re already sick so I don’t see it getting much worse.”
Which sounds more like work than play, poor gals."

Twisted Twins are Total Comic Nerds & Proud
"Forget the “Twisted” part when describing Jen and Sylvia Soska, you can now add sexy geeks as well when describing these two awesome women. Fresh after their first appearance at the San Diego Comic Con where they talked about their film “American Mary“, plus showed off their cosplaying skills for the first time at the con as well. Comic Book Divas talks with Jen and Sylvia Soska about movies, comics and cosplay."Grade five was a changing point in my young life. It was the time that I was first told by my teacher what I could and could not read. Two loves of my life came under fire - my Stephen King books that I would read, discuss the content with my mom, then watch the movie, and my comic books. Mr. King's books where deemed 'too inappropriate' and my comics were 'not real stories'. Both counts were bullshit and I had to sneak in my reading.
Even then, I knew about Comic Con and Jen and I would talk about how cool it would be to one day go to a place where people shared interests and no one judged one another on what they loved. This past Comic Con that dream became a reality and the San Diego Comic Con was even greater than I could have imagined. We were lucky enough to get the opportunity to talk to Comic Book Divas about that experience and about our filmmaking world.
Q: We talked a little bit about San Diego Comic Con; this was your first time attending the huge event, what did you think about the convention?
S: This was our first Comic Con experience. I’ve creeped on the event online through pictures, reviews, blogs, and videos on the event, but absolutely nothing could prepare me for what the event actually was. It was so incredibly happy and people were just wearing their love of the genres on their sleeve. I’m a big comic, film, and gaming nerd – so having the opportunity to hang out with so many people with the same interests is remarkable. I actually felt withdrawal when it was over. I also caught the ‘nerd flu’ but it’s a small price to pay for what was one of the best times of my life.
J: It was so much more than we expected. We had dreamed of attending for years. We had expectations. High ones, but it blew us away. We stepped into the exhibition hall on preview night and were just floored with the massiveness of it all. Kevin Smith said it best in the Comic Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope”, Comic Con is where you find everything you’ve ever loved and thought you lost.” It’s like dying and coming back and trying to describe what Heaven was like. There are no words. It’s too much everything. And the people are just so warm and kind. It’s unlike anything. I can say we’ll never miss another.
I'd like to thank Jeff Hughes for taking the time to chat with us. You can check out the whole piece here where we talk about filmmaking, aspirations, trouble we get into, getting into comics with the very cool First Comics, and so much nerdiness that you can shake a stick at it (I think that is a phrase, but who the hell knows?).
Big thank you to everyone who checks out this blog and keeps up to date with what we are up to regularly and to you new guys that were all like 'twisted twins, what's that?' and are taking a boo or two around here. Welcome to our misadventures. Glad to have you!

American Mary hits the Market at the Cannes Film Festival
Some girls dream of kids and weddings, Jen and I dreamt of horror stories and film festivals. In a very real way, AMERICAN MARY is like an offspring and the Cannes Film Festival is better than a wedding, prom, and all that shit squished together. On the 17th, her world market screening premiere will take place at the Gray D'Albion Hotel with a very exclusive invite list, the first ever look at the film will be available at our booth - Riviera B3 - in the form of a stellar Cannes exclusive trailer, along with potential private screenings at our own theatre at the booth.
I have never left North America, I feel beyond honoured to have the privilege of taking the film to Cannes and showing them what kind of great independent films can be made from the fucking fantastic cast and crews we have in Canada. Last night, we got together with our AMERICAN MARY team for a special pre-Cannes send off.
The film was a labor of love - everyone took a hit and worked their asses off to make something that was beautiful and at the highest level of quality. You can tell the passion of these professionals in every frame. I will never forget the team that made this possible, this isn't a usual story - you don't get too many happy endings in life like this, I'm going to make the most of this privilege to do good by the team and the people who have supported us to make this possible.
Thank you so kindly from the bottom of our hearts. You've opened the whole world up to us!
