The Rise of Women in Horror By Nia Edwards-Behi

"There’s no denying that the Soska Sisters and the relative success of American Mary became quite the focal point for clashing opinions (clashes I very purposefully stayed far away from at the time). While for some, the Soskas were and are horror’s brightest new stars, for many others their self-promotion and public personas were entirely objectionable. It seems to me that their success is not that much different from, say, the success of Adam Green with Hatchet, and his own public persona and interaction with fans. Yet – and by all means, I’m open to be corrected on this – I don’t remember the same backlash to his popularity. I’m by no means going to sit here and type under some self-illusion that I’m an unbiased commentator; however, given the ultimately niche nature of the kind of films we’re discussing here, what filmmaker wouldn’t shout as loudly as they could about a film that breaks out of that niche, even if only slightly? With American Mary’s relative success, the Soskas became figureheads for both sides of the debate. As a result, for me, many of the cracks in the naysayers’ side of the debate started to show more clearly. That prominent bloggers can argue that women filmmakers who ‘dress sexily’ and complain about not being treated equally are asking for such treatment speaks volumes of their lack of understanding of most of the issues that still need addressing in the debate."

Talking to Mary(s)

You are under heavy prosthetic makeup in the film. Did you find it constrictive are was it freeing as an actress?
TR: Not in the least. I found it unsettling to pass by certain reflective surfaces and see someone else’s face. In theatre I have done a lot of mask work and I love creating strange characters in my burlesque, so this was kind of a wet dream for me to play something so extreme. I think at this point it may be more of a challenge to do a film with my own face since there would be so much more to be aware of. On a strangely narcissistic note, while I know everyone will adore Beatrice, it’s a little daunting to wonder if when faced with my own features if I can still win people over in my next project... (full interview)

I feel you are the moral center of the film, representing the road that leads to ruin. What can you tell me about Ruby Realgirl’s motivation for her decision?
PL: I think Ruby feels her decisions are a natural creative extension of herself.  Do I think there’s a deeper reason she wants to desexualize herself? Some sort of past trauma?  Yes. Maybe it’s her own convoluted way of taking her power back, like Mary does in the film. (full interview)
On to American Mary – how did you find each other to make this film? Katharine, what drew you to it?
KI: They…
JS: I wrote it for her!  That’s a big rule as a director: never write for an actor because you don’t know if you’ll end up being disappointed… Maybe they’re not available, or when you meet them maybe they’re not the people that you were hoping they were… but Katie was WAY worse than what we’d imagined.
KI: Huge letdown!
JS: No, she’s like the Fassbender to our Steve McQueen. Katie’s our special one.
SS: We were such big fans from Ginger and we watched everything and when you see the movie this is going to sound cruel, but this is something I’ve always wanted to see Katie do. I was so lucky that not only was she what I hoped she would be from watching all her movies, but she was even better. She only had three takes to do anything – we had 15 days, a lesser actress would have fucked this movie up so bad but she was just brilliant in it! I can’t say enough good things about her.
KI: I like those answers. (full interview)
Sylvia Soska: At the time we were trying to sell our first film, Dead Hooker in a Trunk and nothing was happening, we were incredibly broke from that experience, we were going down to LA being very green and had no idea really what we were doing and we were meeting some real industry monsters.

Jen Soska: That hasn’t changed much.

Sylvia Soska: No not too much.

Then we had ailing family members who were in the hospital all the time and I was talking to a friend and he was like ‘You should focus on your next project, what other scripts do you have?’ and I had nothing!

So I thought ‘Nope, I’m going to lie’ and I made up a sentence for every movie that I thought I could write in two weeks.

Jen Soska: It’s really a life lesson, when in doubt, lie. (full interview)
SS: They saw how much of a fan-girl I was and I carry a modification hook in my purse…
(Sylvia produces a hook from her bag)
SS: When my balls drop – not Superman style, because I’m too much of a pussy! – I want to do the shoulder suspension, not only because I want to know what that transcendence is like, but if I did it then a lot of people will be like “Well, if that little chick can do it…”

JS: Street cred!

SS: Stop pretending it’s a big freakish thing, it’s kind of cool.

KI: I don’t know. I’d get 3D implants. I don’t know enough about it to know where you could do it though. I would want some shoulder/arm ones.

SS: You could do that. (full interview)

FLASH BANG's interview with Katie & the Twins

Brutal As Hell: (trying and failing to casually get notes out) I’ve got notes.
(Laughter)
Jen Soska: “Ladies, why are you such cunting fucks?”
BAH: Wha- when did you see this sheet?
(More laughter. Go me.)
BAH: Hello Katharine Isabelle, hello… (attempts to guess – Sylvia whispers her name) Sylvia Soska! Okay, right, I wouldn’t have known that at all, obviously – I mean, I would have known. Ahem.
(More laughs. I’m on a roll.)
BAH: And Jen Soska. Hello.
JS: Hello Ben.
BAH: So first of all, how is life on the road treating you?
Sylvia Soska: We’re like a band. It’s a good thing we like each other, because we could have killed each other by now.
JS: We’re pretty much Led Zeppelin right now.
Katharine Isabelle: Yeah, we’re pretty much Led Zeppelin. (full interview)

FLICKS AND THE CITY interview Katie & the Twins

Katharine, do you feel you play a feminist heroine in the film?
Katharine: I absolutely do. I’ve done a few horror movies and it’s absolutely refreshing. The character of Mary on paper has no redeemable qualities. She’s not that pleasant, she’s not that kind, she has no friends, she has no family. She’s very narcissistic and self-absorbed, and that was refreshing in itself. I tried my best to make the character likeable without sweetening anything, without dumping any radical rigid feminist plotlines and themes! (laughs) I think it was the most true-to-life character that I’ve ever had the opportunity to portray because all the time in film women are, like Sylvia said earlier, those sort of easy bake kind of cookie images, like the slut, the tease, the good girl next door. And to have a character that was so multi-dimensional, that didn’t have any particular redeeming qualities, but was still likeable, was still strong, was still interesting and stood up for herself and gave not one fuck about anyone else, or what anyone else thought, or what anyone else expected of her, is something that I think we need to see more of in film and in society in general. (full interview)

Sylvie is more categorical: “We’re undatable, and after this movie, we’re even more undatable.” When American Mary showed at the market in Cannes, she recalls, “a gentleman started hitting on me. He said, ‘What are you doing here?’ I said, ‘I’m here for the movie, which I made with my sister.’ He said, ‘I hope it’s good.’ The movie plays, he looks at me, grabs his coat and speed-walks out. There you go.” (full interview)

SayWhatNews: In the horror film, ‘American Mary’ you played Billy Barker - a weathered and detached entrepreneur in the adult entertainment business. How did you prepare for this role?

Antonio: I showed up. Haha…. no seriously, Billy Barker was an idea I had of someone who is trying to hold on.. disgruntled, unsatisfied and a soft souled hard-ass. We all have many personalities that we don’t always tap into. I had to dig up some stuff that I didn’t know was available deep down but in the end Billy’s attributes are a part of who I am in some way. But all that gets locked in some character storage locker of your soul and you move on. (full interview)

MARY Christmas

It's been one incredible year. AMERICAN MARY has taken the world by storm and we've been lucky enough to along for the wild ride as she made her trek across the globe. It was fucking incredible to not only get to share AMERICAN MARY with the world, but to have such an overwhelming response from critics and fans alike have been a dream come true. This year is coming to an end. A time for new beginnings and to look back and reflect. It's a privilege to see MARY gracing so many lists.  We want to thank each and every person who came out to see the film and spread the news on her. She's only come this far because of you and your support. Thank you more than we can say.
"1. American Mary

Oh, don’t act like you’re surprised. While the rest of this list could be fairly changeable in the numerical order I’ve placed it, American Mary would proudly sit at the top of the pile irrespective of anything else. I’m not sure there’s much more I can say about the film, having briefly reviewed it back in May, and more recently and extensively in August. Many more people have seen the film by now, and the response seems to be overwhelmingly positive. It’s been one of the most highly anticipated and talked about films of the year. With hype, though, comes disappointment and backlash, and the film – quite fairly – has its naysayers. But – *dons hipster glasses* – some of us unreservedly loved the film before the hype machine took over, and for me the film stands up to multiple viewings, and so it shall stand to multiple more." ~ Nia Edwards-Behi
On a personal note, we love Nia. Nia was the first person anywhere ever to screen DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. She's believed in us and supported us from the very beginning. There was no greater feeling than showing her AMERICAN MARY and showing her how far we've come. She'll be among the very first to get to see BOB, as well.
For the FULL REVIEW & LIST click here and PLEASE ENJOY.

"American Mary
Those with a penchant for the perverse had to search hard for the best of genre cinema. Elijah Wood’s starring turn in Maniac is a masterclass in subliminal horrific intent, but it has only played festival slots to date. The deconstructionist puzzle The Cabin in the Woods finally surfaced to fandom satisfaction. Only Josh Trank’s terrific debut Chronicle got the studio-marketing push denied most other worthy genre works. The hottest new names on the horror scene are Canadian twin sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska, who unleashed upon the world the supremely stylish, body-modification ickiness of American Mary."
For the FULL LIST, check out SBS Film's FULL LIST right here.
Thank you so much to BRUTAL AS HELL and SBS Film for believing in our independent darling. It's been an incredible year and we have a lot to be thankful for. Thank you for spending it with us and Mary.
Fatally Yours,
Jen

Dead Hooker Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap & Right

Ben Bussey's latest for Brutal As Hell - DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP: When Microbudget Horror Gets It Right. And fucking awesome - our DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK makes the cut!

Dead Hooker in a Trunk (Jen & Sylvia Soska, 2009)
Production budget: $2,500
I rather doubt this film or its writer-directors require any introduction at this point. However, I’ll be the first to admit that on seeing the film at its world premiere over two years ago, I was initially dismissive of it, owing largely to that knee-jerk reaction to DV that I spoke of earlier. It was only when I took a step back that I realised just how much Dead Hooker In A Trunk breaks with conventional wisdom. Where so many first-time filmmakers restrict their action to a single location and a minimal cast, the Soskas keep things moving at all times, hopping locations as gleefully as they cross genre boundaries.
Once again, good writing and acting really saves the day, but it certainly doesn’t hurt that there are stunts and special effects which are significantly above average for films made at this budgetary level, not to mention how good CJ Wallis’ soundtrack is.

Fucking awesome to be included on a list with some great indie gems like: ABSENTIA, BLOOD CAR, SMALL TOWN FOLK, COCKHAMMER, and COLIN. Check out the whole rad piece here.

And if you haven't heard of or seen these flicks - go ahead and treat yourselves, they will renew your love of the genre with the fine work of these filmmakers! Thank you to Ben for getting the word out about these films.

American Mary First Screening at the Cannes Market

"If I may indulge in some flagrant cliché abuse, the Soska Sisters are not just going places, but they’re paving the way to an exciting, vital and game-changing career in genre filmmaking. The powerhouses behind Dead Hooker in a Trunk have made their second film, American Mary, which has received its first screening at the Marche du Film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film stars Katharine Isabelle as Mary, a broke medical student who finds herself mired in a bizarre world of underground surgery." -Nia Edwards-Behi, BRUTAL AS HELL
The name Nia Edwards-Behi might sound familiar to you. If not, here is an interesting piece of information that you might not be aware of - the very first screening of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, when no one wanted to touch that film with a ten foot pole, happened at the Ghouls on Film Festival in the UK thanks to Nia. The admiration for this woman who truly supports the independent has only grown in the years that we have come to know her. It was a thrill to not only have her, Gaz Bailey, and Rhys Thomas Fowler at Cannes to make a pair of foreigners feel more at home, but an amazing honour to have them in attendance for the first screening of AMERICAN MARY. How appropriate that this sensational woman would reveal the first look of the film.
"Mary is a completely different beast to Dead Hooker. Where Dead Hooker is a loving tribute to B-movies and grindhouse cinema, Mary is a stylish, artful and darkly funny tragedy. This difference is the Soskas’ masterstroke – even the most doubting spectator would struggle to deny the absolute versatility on display between the two films."

I know we've been very hush hush on the flick and going to the Cannes market makes it difficult to check out the screening, but for those of you dying of antic..............pation, check out the full beautiful review. No spoilers - so you're surprises are safe!

Thank you so much to everyone who was a part of this. Very extremely fucking cool of you all.

Brand Spanking New Brutal As Hell Interview with the Twisted Twins

"Canada has given us some great things over the years: David Cronenberg; Neil Young; a place for America’s draft-dodgers to go. And now, Canada gives us one of the most exciting independent filmmaking teams around right now, Jen and Sylvia Soska of Twisted Twins Productions." ~Ben Bussey, BRUTAL AS HELL

Ben Bussey is an outstanding writer for BRUTAL AS HELL and he has one particular trait that really makes me respect him.

Honesty.
The first time he had heard of us, he wasn't sold. Much like a cat, when we hear that someone doesn't quite see us as "their cup of tea", I like the person all the more. I hope for the opportunity to win them over. One thing that I've heard come up again and again from reviewers when they watch DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is that they are surprised at how good it is. And that's more than fair.

"But allow me to convince you."

Ben was kind enough to give the film a go and take the time to have a little chat with us. We thoroughly enjoyed talking with him and here's the delicious interview that ensued.

Ben also did his homework. He asked us something no one's ever asked us about that we've just been dying to talk about. That can only be ONE thing, boys and grrls...

That's right.

But enough blabbing on my account. Get the FULL ARTICLE AND INTERVIEW with BRUTAL AS HELL's Ben Bussey and we Twisted Twins HERE!

Ten Women That Are Brutal As Hell

"How did I choose the ladies on this list, pulling them from the hundreds of others?
First, I wanted there to be a personal connection for myself. These are all films which I admire and have seen more than once. They are ones that I would call favorites. I wanted to eliminate the distancing effect of picking a film because it’s important on a larger scale, or to the majority of genre fans, but not necessarily important to me. When all is said and done the most significant impact a film can have is that of the impact upon an individual. A film succeeds in being most powerful in the intimacy that comes when you’re pulled into it completely.
Second, with the field narrowed I looked at films where women rose above both adversity and their pre-determined station to overcome whatever conflict was presented. I eliminated films where weak women became strong in a final moment. I looked for those films where the woman never backed down, was always strong, always a force to be reckoned with, even if she fell as a victim and was overpowered by her oppressors. Horror as a genre is one that rings truthful, more than any other genre, that good does not always triumph over evil. In spite of this truth, it should never take away from the inherent virtue in fighting for good." ~ Marc Patterson, BRUTAL AS HELL
As Women In Horror recognition month winds to an end one thing has become evident. The appreciation and celebration of women and their countless contributions to horror will not be coming to an end. The month has taken on a life of its own and, as a result, women are being appreciated and recognized more than ever. The founder of this month, Hannah Neurotica, will surely have an indestructible smile on her crimson lips.

Marc Patterson, owner and editor-in-chief of the abso~fucking~lutely brilliant site BRUTAL AS HELL, has taken this opportunity to honor TEN WOMEN IN HORROR THAT BREAK THE MOULD OF CONVENTION. This list contains some of the most badass, inspirational, take-no-shit-from-nobody women to ever grace the screen. Yes, you bet your sweet ass Ripley is on there.

As a supreme honor, both myself and Sylv are also included amongst the list of these incredible women. Not us exactly, but more accurately, BADASS and GEEK are honored. We are just blown away by this great distinction, especially taking a look at the fellow femme fatales to appear on the list. Just, wow.

Thank you so very much to Marc Patterson and BRUTAL AS HELL for this. We are speechless and that special kind of happy that Bruce Willis is in PULP FICTION when he lays eyes on that Katana.

Of course, we've given away already too many ladies to appear on the list. To see the FULL LIST and FIND OUT WHY, read on!

Obviously, I must now go watch PULP FICTION.

Bloody Best!

Hell Hath No Fury... like a Man stuck in Jersey

"You know – I disappear into Jersey for not but two days and all sorts of crazy shit starts going on. Jen and Sylvia Soska have really had the indie horror scene talking this past year. Their yet to be distributed film Dead Hooker in a Trunk has been making waves and in spite of lack of distribution has been able to find showings in a ton of spots that defy tradition. We even hosted a standing room only showing in the downstairs of a pub!" - Marc Patterson

Marc Patterson is one hell of a guy. If you don't know him or haven't read BRUTAL AS HELL - please catch up here. For those of you that are have yet to be introduced to the fantastic site that is BRUTAL AS HELL, please read on --
"Brutal As Hell is a horror culture website that focuses on modern hack n’ slash, 60′s and 70′s exploitation, gialli, sleaze, and all forms of video nasty, highlighting hot directors, actors, composers, and everything that falls in-between. Brutal As Hell features five original monthly columns, news, film reviews, and monthly interviews. Check out the bio’s below!"

I absolutely fucking love that DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK has played in a pub and I fucking love every single person who came out to support it, told a friend, and has been behind the film. Marc has it right on the money when he says (about AMERICAN MARY) "this film will be our reward" in reference to the new film being a thank you to the horror fans that have been supporting us. The success that DHIAT has seen and will see - distribution news is just around the corner - is a result of the horror community banding together and really getting behind the film. AMERICAN MARY is our humblest thanks.

This is a great and intriguing piece. Much speculation on the upcoming film, but for now our lips are relatively sealed. Read the whole article here and relish all the radness.

Killing Boxx Anyone?

From conception to its natural end (though, I highly suspect that time isn't dawning near anytime soon...), DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK was created purely for audience enjoyment. When people tell me they've seen and loved DHIAT, I swell with pride and joy. When I see a fan wearing a Dead Hooker T-Shirt, I squeal with glee. When someone places a Dead Hooker Bumper sticker on their car, I beam with happiness. As I hope everyone who's supported our film knows, we will always be grateful and thankful to all our wonderful friends, fans, families, and Dead Hooker enthusiasts everywhere for doing their part to help spread the good word.

Today we were floored by receiving a glowing review from Killing Boxx. With profound joy, Sylv announced to me: "WE GOT TEN CLEAVERS!!". I read on with great antici... pation...

"Every so often a trip to the movies will leave you high as a kite, jacked on cinephillic steroids. This usually occurs after seeing a film that possesses genuine heart, breathing with a life of its own, acting as a catharsis, it provides a much appreciated and necessary reaffirmation of all that captured the imagination and fascination with cinema to begin with, Dead Hooker In A Trunk from Vancouver based Soska sisters of Twisted Twins Productions, is of this ilk."

We've been honored to have had DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK play all around the world, venues huge and small. We can proudly say that we have never turned down a reviewer or venue. We've always humbly wanted to share our Dead Hooker with as many people as possible. Recently, Marc of Brutal As Hell brought the film to Harlow’s Pub, Peterborough, New Hampshire. It was a free event and we were blown away to know that that pub was packed! "And let me tell you - it was CRAZY! The pub isn't huge. But it was literally standing room only. Folks were sitting on the floor!" Will, writer of the above review from Killing Boxx, was in attendance this evening.

We would like to extend a very special thanks to Marc for putting the whole event together and inviting our Dead Hooker to the party! Thank you to Will for taking a chance on an indie film and coming out! And thank you to EVERYONE who came out!

For the full, sexy review, read on HERE
.

Our Bloodiest of Bests!
Jen

PS. DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is playing ALL over the place and we want you, yes, you, to go and see it! Not coming near you? Well, drop us a line and let's make it happen. After all, together, we're an army.

Here are the delicious details...

"Indie Horror/Exploitation Night at Harlow’s Pub in Peterborough NH – Saturday October 23rd – 10 PM

It’s a night of demons, druggies, punk rockers, dead hookers, and church youth group. What? A church youth group?

That’s right – This Saturday night at 10 PM, drag your undead corpse to Harlow’s Pub in Peterborough NH for a night of killer horror, brought to you by BrutalAsHell.com.

Starting at 10PM we’ll be screening a twenty-minute short film – NIGHT OF THE PUNKS. Directed by Dan Reisser of the popular E! Entertainment show, The Soup, Night of the Punks promises loads of over the top gore and comedy in a throwback style to the great splatter films of the 80′s.

Then we roll into our feature flick. A film so perverse we can hardly utter its name. Well… okay… we will anyway. DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is a modern exploitation film featuring a pair of twisted twin sisters, (who are completely unalike in every way except for their looks), their junky friend, and a bible toting youth group dork as they plummet from one mishap into another all because of a Dead Hooker in a Trunk! Written and directed by the Soska Sisters, “Dead Hooker” has been all the rage amongst horror fans this year and has been gaining critical acclaim. It’s not one to be missed!

The cost of admission? Only your soul! That’s right. This screening is free to the public, which means more money for beer! Show up at Harlows early to grab a bite to eat from the kitchen (which closely promptly at 10), hobble your way downstairs to where we’ll be rolling these incredible films. Bring your friends, bring your enemies, just come out on in droves.
