One Room With a View Sees American Mary

"Aside from American Mary‘s already numerous merits, the paradoxically engrossing motley of Brian Pearson’s elegant cinematography consistently permeates the screen. Slow, languid movements are in perfect contrast with Mary‘s exploitative and visceral subject matter. Composer Peter Allan works in skillful synchronicity with Pearson’s muted intonations, resulting in an extremely accomplished and immersive space, upon which the Soskas emblazon their antithetically reticent impressions of a sub-culture known for its innate shock-value.

Consequently, American Mary occupies an innate sense of intimacy, that intuitively renegotiates the role of sub-culture within a scheme that customarily elicits systems of difference in an effort to evoke feeling. The pervasive use of tactical alienation that runs throughout the morbidly orthodox heraldry of horror surgeons, has been freely altered by the Soska’s tactful sensitivity. Lastly, the Twisted Twins have initiated a much desired re-calibration of the ostensibly overworked philosophies of conventional horror, once again demonstrating the conducive influence of cult cinema."

Scream For American Mary, Reviews From Screamfest!

"One thing that stood out for me about the film was the respect the Soskas pay to those who actively play a role in the body modification scene. I may not be one to take part in such things but it’s good to see the perspective paid here towards those who choose this lifestyle. Also, the film’s look and feel is way more beautiful than I expected. Sleaze and style seem to be mixed with equal parts here and ultimately kept my attention throughout the whole damn thing. It’s a rare thing for an audience to cringe, laugh and ogle the talent on screen in the same sitting and I applaud AMERICAN MARY for inciting such mixed reactions all the way through.
Alas, the highlight throughout the film, was Katharine Isabelle’s performance as Mary. While Jen and Sylvia Soska stated AMERICAN MARY was an analogy for their experience in Film School, I must also state this is a pretty compelling character study. Brilliant, sexy, diabolical and dangerous, Isabelle takes us down the road Mary walks with a sort of reckless abandon that you rarely see on screen these days. As Dr. Mason ventures further down the rabbit hole, the film builds as well and we’re left to cringe and laugh our way through a darkly sensual and somewhat bloody ride." - Aaron Pruner, Icons of Fright (full article)
"Does anyone remember watching early work by odd auteurs like David Cronenberg or Dario Argento and having an epiphany moment of ‘here is a talent not to ignore’ – welcome the Soska Sisters. The vibrant young duo and their perversely and passionately abnormal movie "American Mary" is film unlike anything I’ve seen in recent years. A wonderfully insane conundrum of horror, drama, revenge and the effect power has over people – in other words a seriously savory mind job." - Jason Coleman, Starpulse (full article

Cinematographer Brian Pearson Talks About His Experience on Shooting The Feature Film American Mary in 15 Days

AMERICAN MARY is a haunting film that is darkly beautiful.

You cannot gaze upon the trailer without taking notice of the breath taking cinematography. Stylistically, the film is as far from the Grindhouse style of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK as imaginable and the director of photography for the film was absolutely vital in achieving the beautiful look and dark feel to the film. It was our intention from the very start to give the cinematography of the film an Asian and European film inspired style, looking to films such as AUDITION, I SAW THE DEVIL, and LET THE RIGHT ONE IN to inspire. With even the harshest and most unforgiving of content, we wanted the beauty and style to shine through. It was no small under taking to find a DP that could achieve this look with our time span and modest budget.

He had to be fast on his feet. He needed to have a clear vision for the film. He needed a deep understanding of Mary Mason and her world. He needed to be the best of the best. He needed to be Brian Pearson.

"It was fascinating working with twin directors Sylvia and Jen Soska on this film because they both had such a similar version of the project and of “Mary” in their minds.  If one director took off to look at wardrobe or make-up, or to go into make-up for her role, the other one could immediately answer any questions for myself and the crew.  Our collaboration was very smooth and worked hard to define an arch in the camera and lighting that would support the story of Mary’s journey."

Brian Pearson is one of the most gifted, brilliant, insightful, and professional men that we have ever had the esteemed pleasure of working with. He's worked on DRIVE ANGRY, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, I, ROBOT, KISSED, DEVOUR, THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT 2, FINAL DESTINATION 5, the DARK ANGEL series, two Masters of Horror films, and numerous others.

"I wanted to make the visuals in Mary’s world as dark and mysterious as possible.  I pushed the contrast levels hard in certain scenes to make Mary’s world very dark and bleak at times. I experimented with underexposing the Red Epic-X cameras which gave the image a kind of wonderful (digital) grainy feel, something like one would have had underexposing a fast film stock in the past. I tended to expose more in the toe of the sensor which seemed to give her world a slightly hazy quality, like when you’re in a dark room and you’re straining to see something in the distance or when you’re in a dream.  The look the images had when underexposed felt right to me for this story and gave Mary’s world an uncertain, unstable quality where not everything was clearly defined or clearly illuminated."

We cannot wait to show you the film.

Please enjoy the FULL INTERVIEW from MENTORLESS with the amazing Brian Pearson RIGHT HERE.

Fatally Yours,
Jen

DEAD HOOKER makes More Horror's Top 5 of 2011

Jason Lees, we love you, too. Jason has written a radcore list of his top 5 films of 2011. And what lands a film on that epic list? Unforgettability. Yeah, that is SO actually a word. And we love More Horror. Seriously, you should check that shit out. It is rad.

"The following films are ones that may have snuck out prior to last year but are ones that I just got around to seeing. And when I say “top” I mean they’re the ones that stood out the most. I bet there were some better films released last year, but when I looked back, these are the ones that really burned themselves into my psyche." ~ Jason Lees, More Horror

And guess who's on that list? DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is #1. Okay, so it's a list that is in NO particular order, but, fuck it, we'll take it anyway ;)

"DEAD HOOKER needs to be better known, and I know I’m preaching to the converted here, but it’s the kind of film we need more of, especially today with all the problems we have with mass produced remakes and cookie cutter mainstream mush. DEAD HOOKER isn’t trying to re-invent the wheel, it just does. Love this film." ~ Jason Lees, More Horror

Also on that list? DRIVE ANGRY. And what does DRIVE ANGRY have that gets us all excited? OTHER than Nicolas Cage (who, at present, may or may not be a 300 year old vampire, I shit you not)?

Brian Pearson, one of the top directors of photography anywhere, shot that bad boy and, man, does he shoot things sexy as hell. Brian's also the director of photography in our upcoming AMERICAN MARY so get ready for awesome~y awesome~ness galore.

Check out Jason's FULL LIST HERE!!

And for all you Nick Cage fans out there, here is the greatest Nick Cage video of all time. A personal favorite.

**WARNING** Watching this video may make you fall hopelessly in love with Nick Cage. Watch at your own discretion. Anyone with a heart condition must leave the room.

XO,
Jen
