Alison Lilly

Women In Horror recognition month is truly one hell of a month. But why, Jen? What gives? What makes it so damn special? Do you chicks REALLY need a whole month to pat one another on the back? Well, as a matter of fact, WiH month is a whole lot more than simply celebrating the female artists who often get looked over and if you call me "chick" again, I'll tear off your baby maker.
We get to recognize the incredible artist contributions of women throughout the world, we female artists who may not have had the opportunity to meet before can get in touch with one another, and hopefully we can inspire women to stand strong and follow their dreams. But can't we do this all year 'round? That's the goal. Unfortunately, women aren't recognized as much as their male counter parts. Women In Horror month aims to change all that.

An artist that we have the esteemed honor to meet and befriend is one who isn't nearly as well known as she should be. Her unique and breath-takingly beautiful and dark art has blown us away. We were honored to have her attend our Vancouver screening of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK. The rest is history. Allow us to continue on the proud tradition of this month and introduce you to an astounding female artist, Alison Lilly.

Alison Lilly is an artist who has an extensive background in textile screen printing, which she has incorporated into her fine arts practice. Currently she is working on mixed media print work and illustrative design projects.

Alison addresses her own interest in traditional male and female archetypes portrayed within pop culture and media of the past and present through her amazing artwork. With her powerful and provocative imagery, Alison’s work raises questions regarding how we choose to perceive media imagery, as well as how these portrayals influence our culture.

I couldn't HOPE to show you all the magnificent pieces Alison has created so please check out her OFFICIAL SITE HERE and follow her OFFICIAL BLOG HERE. We do.

She has also, as you can clearly see from her gore~geous poster above, has been a big part of and contributor to Women In Horror month. We'll certainly keep you up to date on her work. We're quite excited to see and share with you all what she does next. Now go check out her site and follow her blog!

Big, Round, Full, and Juicy Br... ains!

I adore this image for the upcoming Women In Horror Month, designed by the astonishingly, talent Alison Lilly. Breath it in, boys and girls. Brains are the new tits.

More brilliance to come. Get planning. Everyone can be a part of the celebration and recognition. Be the change you want to see in the world.

What is Women In Horror Month? It's a stereotype crushing celebration of women's contribution in one the most female-embracing genres we have. The brainchild of Ax Wound's Hannah Neurotica who started the event last year. It was been an incredible ride and we're not slowing down.

We, Twisted Twins, host a worldwide Massive Blood Drive last and every February that is to follow. It's simple, in February go make a donation at your local blood bank. Get a cookie and help someone in need. Your blood is invaluable to some many people who need your generosity to live. There is no substitute for healthy donor blood. Around the world, if you're feeling extra generous, coordinate your own local donation day. Tell us - and we'll help get the word out! Needles lose all ability to scare when you're in a crowd of friends (and you don't feel a thing). It's win/win.

There are many events worldwide celebrating this upcoming month - film festivals where you can showcase your work, there is the always fantastic Bleedfest that will have a special February WiH celebration screening in LA on the 6th, and many more events will be posted here. Stay tuned (and stay awesome).

I am Woman, Hear Me Roar

What an exciting genre to be a part of. Horror. Where else will teenage girls defeat unspeakable evil, even younger girls become the epitome of evil, and the final girl will rule? Last February, men and women, from all over the world came together to celebrate the first annual Women In Horror Month.

It's still a few months away, but we want you to be in the know, girls and boys. You, reading this blog right now, can be a part of it. It's a great comradery event in the horror scene. This appreciation and awareness month was started by good friend and sister separated at birth, the incredible - Hannah Neurotica. And that lady never stops working. Here is the latest --

The first way to join in the fun is a WiH Month Poster Campaign. And here are some rad ones that have been submitted --

"You may have seen my manic clogging up of your Facebook/Twitter/Myspace pages with a proposal for “FEBRUARY AS WOMEN IN HORROR RECOGNITION MONTH: February has 28 days so it seems appropriate. PASS IT ON.” I posted it originally as just that- a proposal. That is no longer the case. Instead I am fucking claiming it. As a woman I have spent most of my life afraid to claim space for myself in the world. Building this website is about confronting that and from my impression I am so far from alone in this. It is not un-common for a lot of woman living in our openly patriarchal society to feel the burdens of their gender on a daily basis. Examples: Walking outside alone at night with the constant fear of attack, still being paid less for equal work, reproductive rights constantly threatened, body image self esteem massacres in women’s magazines/popular media, etc etc. So who’s to say I need some outside source to grant me their godly permission to claim February as WOMEN IN HORROR RECOGNITION MONTH? Easy: I don’t. Just like I didn’t need someone’s permission to start Ax Wound ‘Zine, I don’t need anyone to grant the creation of this much needed month. So, in the spirit of punk rock, DIY (Do-It-Yourself), and a little sprinkle of blood saturated glitter… I officially claim February 2010 the first annual WOMEN IN HORROR RECOGNITION MONTH. If I have to celebrate by myself so be it but I really hope to have the support of horror fans of all genders! Now let’s get into the nitty-fucking-gritty about why this is necessary and how you can bring this alive from the dark cold underground where it lays dormant and waiting for us to animate."

Women In Horror Month is coming fast. February 2011 will mark the second annual Women In Horror Month! What will you do? Plan now. Make your mark.
