Sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska enjoy a relaxing moment between killings
"Magnet Releasing revealed the line-up for its The ABCs of Death sequel at Cannes today, and Vancouver's Jen and Sylvia Soska—currently riding a big wave with American Mary—are among those who have signed on to direct a segment in the newest anthology.
Otherwise known to adoring genre fans as the Twisted Twins, the Soskas will join other genre insurgents such as Larry Fessenden, Alex De La Iglesias, Sion Sono, Room 237's Rodney Ascher (interviewed by the Straight here), and Lithuania's Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper—we talked to the former when their exquisite erotic sci-fi flick Vanishing Waves played at the Rio Grind festival last year. Also involved this time around is legendary animator Bill Plympton."

http://www.megatechnews.com - The MEGATechNews team had a great time covering the 2013 Vancouver Fan Expo this past weekend. Although there were lots of big celebrities like Amanda Tapping, Michael Rooker, Michael Hogan and more, we decided to shine a light on some of the equally important things at the show like the comic artists (Kurtis Wiebe), voice actors (Michael Banyaer), and background actors (Peter Kent) that also make the experience unique. We also talk to two of the biggest fan clubs, the Ghostbusters of BC and the 501st Legion, to find out what their experience was at this year’s event plus tons of costumed fans of all sorts.

Rue Morgue's Festival of Fear is Coming to Vancouver!!
See you there!!
"FESTIVAL OF FEAR VANCOUVER GORES UP THE WEST COAST
Here at Rue Morgue, there is much we don’t know. How many people are lost every year in the Gore-Met’s beard? Was Aaron Von Lupton born with that pompadour, or was it more of a deal-with-the-devil-type thing? Something we do know, though, is that one Festival of Fear isn’t enough. So we’re pleased to announce the FESTIVAL OF FEAR VANCOUVER HORROR EXPO, going down April 20-21 at the Vancouver Convention Centre (999 Canada Place – and what’s “999” when you flip it around? See, it’s destiny.) Guests will include The Walking Dead’s NORMAN REEDUS; makeup maestro TOM SAVINI; ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK; Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s JAMES MARSTERS and JULIET LANDAU; the SOSKA TWINS and more. Keep an eyeball on the official Festival of Fear website for updates!"

My Other Me embodies the things that we've always loved most about Halloween [and] acting... Cosplay [has] really become it's own art form and form of self-expression; that ability to pull on someone else's skin and be everything or anything you ever wanted to be. Their bravery and self discovery is something we are just in awe of. It's a heart-warming, beautiful film that makes you want to discover your 'other me'. - Jen and Sylvia Soska

Nightmare Factory shines a light on a man and a profession that has been a long time love of ours. Thank God Greg Nicotero quit med school and built up the legendary KNB FX. His work has consistently blown audiences away along with his cutting edge approaches. He is the go-to man of our personal heroes Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. Nicotero is a Hollywood treasure, and this film gorgeously demonstrates just why KNB FX is the prolific monster that it is today. - Jen and Sylvia Soska

Vancouver Vigilante Justice
Last Wednesday, shit hit the fan.
After an outstanding season, the Canucks lost to the Bruins. Do I care to comment on the playoffs? No, not really. Not here and now. Buy me a drink and maybe I'll give you my complete thoughts on the wins and losses of the playoffs, but that's not what I'm writing for. In 1994, we lost and it wasn't a clean loss. There were some fairly shitty calls in that game and it was damn close. I don't agree with a riot, but I can see why it happened way back when.
A long time ago, there was this story I read about that just stuck in my mind and really got to me. It was the story of Vince Weiguang Li. Maybe some of you know this one, but for those of you hearing about this for the first time, let me take you through it.
On July 30th, 2008, Li committed a horrible act. He boarded a Grey Hound bus in Winnipeg and about 10 kilometres east of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, he stabs a man he's never met to death brutally. He stabs him in the neck, cuts off his head, and mutilates his body, even eating portions of it. He was stabbed over 50 times. Tim McLean was only 22. Now why would I bring up this horrible event? I've never been able to get over one fact...
There were 37 passengers on that bus. 37. Not one attempted to intervene? I understand the fear for one's own safety, but if we all were heroes, if we all stood up, what kind of world would we have? A place where someone snatches a purse and everyone turns in pursuit. A place where kids can get on a bus and if some monster comes on with a knife, someone will try to pull them off, a place where you don't riot and vandalize for absolutely no fucking reason without someone standing in your way.
Was it a Vancouver riot like that of '94? No. It was a few shitty people that intentionally went in there to blow shit up and take advantage of a cover of 100,000 people to get away with vandalism, theft, and violence. It has been revealed that gutted vehicles were brought in with the specific intention of burning them, regardless of whether or not the Canucks won or lost. Some people got swept up in the crowd mentality. Most people didn't think they would be seen in a wave of fans, so they made some stupid choices. But I am proud to be a citizen of Vancouver as most people decided to be heroes.
I am proud to say that even more heroes came out Thursday to right wrongs and tidied up our town. People wrote beautiful inspiring messages on the boards covering broken store windows and those boards will now be kept as a reminder.
I love you Vancouver. And don't sweat it, Canucks. We love you, too, and will start next year saying and believing, "this is our year."

Betty Thomas
If you are a Vancouver~ite and have found yourself inside, you were undoubtedly treated to being in the company of some of the finest expendable supplies, pyrotechnics, artificial snow effects, custom breakaway glass, and mechanical effects rental equipment that you could have ever dreamed of. During their Christmas season they transform their space into a winter wonderland that makes even the most adamant of Scrooges overcome with child like wonderment. If you prefer to tread on the dark side like yours truly, you'll have to drop by Halloween time for a display that will make you feel like you just wandered into a Tim Burton film.
In addition to helping to establish the Thomas name as the premiere special effects company in Canada and supporting dramatic effects for successful film projects around the world, she was the first female stunt performer, first female stunt coordinator, and first female 2nd unit director in Canada. She even trained the incredible Melissa Stubbs. She's worked on countess films with some of the biggest directors and actors in the world. Her credits include well over 50 films.
Betty has been recognized nationally by her peers as "Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year" for her contribution to the local economy, and received the international "Ambassador's Award" from Canada's Ambassador to the United States, in Washington DC.
Betty also received the "Award of Merit" from the British Columbia Film Commission for her "Contribution to the Development of the BC Film Industry", and several awards from the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce for "Business Excellence"... for "Innovation", and for "Best Business".
Betty is a member of the International Women's Business Forum, an Honorary Lifetime Member of Canadian Women in Film & Video, and a long standing judge for the annual Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.
And yet I had to struggle to even find a photo of her.
I hate to think that many of you are hearing her name for the first time, but I am honored to be able to showcase the woman whose invaluable contributions to the film industry has paved the way for countless others. She is a truly remarkable human being who can teach us all a lot about business, perseverance, and strength.
Thank you, Betty, most humbly, for being an inspirational pioneer in the film world and making us all work a little harder in hopes of coming anywhere close to the bar you've set so very high.

Melissa Stubbs
"I am what I do" - Melissa Stubbs
Talk about women in the world of stunts and it's only a matter of minutes before her name comes up. Talk about the men and her name still comes up within minutes. There are specific stunts only she can do. She was worked on over a hundred and fifty films and she started by busting her ass for free. That's right. At the age of 17, this Vancouver-born would show up to any and all productions filming in the city and volunteer her services. There is a lot of sacrifice if you want to break into this industry and it seems like she could have written the book on it.
It didn't matter whether it was pouring rain (you may have heard about the rain up here - it's all true), it didn't matter what the stunt was - or if she would just be helping the stunt team or working as an extra, it didn't matter that she had to work out and train extremely hard everyday - nothing stopped her. She knew what she wanted to do and she set out to work hard and get it. She is the one and only, Melissa Stubbs.
Kick boxing, running the Grouse Grind (for those of you not familiar with Vancouver, it is on Grouse Mountain, it is pretty much straight up the side of a very steep mountain - kind of like what the cenobites would recommend), horse back riding, motorcross, and jetskiing are how she rigorously trained to be the best. She spent everything on expensive equipment to train more - to be a stunt driver, to have the skills to pull off extreme stunts, and to put herself in the best possible shape and skill level to do what she loved. And it payed off. Her dedication and work ethic got noticed by BC pioneer stuntwoman, Betty Thomas. She would later give Melissa one of her first big stunt jobs - falling out of a top window of the Vancouver Art Gallery while doubling for Donna Mills.
”She was always turning up on set and I used to wonder, ‘isn’t this girl going to leave us alone?’ She had a mission and wasn’t going to give up no matter what. I admired her tenacity, and knew that she was going to succeed.” -Betty Thomas (on Melissa Stubbs)
The first stunt job she landed was doubling for Kelly Hu in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 8 and that was just the start. It's her training, professionalism, and drive that kept her working. She has since worked on films like: KNIGHT MOVES, ALIVE, LOOK WHOSE TALKING NOW?, TIMECOP, LEGENDS OF THE FALL, ASSASSINS, JUMANJI, HAPPY GILMORE, BORDELLO OF BLOOD, ROMEO + JULIET, DANTE'S PEAK, BATMAN & ROBIN, DISTURBING BEHAVIOR, LAKE PLACID, DOUBLE JEOPARDY, FINAL DESTINATION, ROMEO MUST DIE, DUETS, THE SIXTH DAY, SAVING SILVERMAN, ALONG CAME A SPIDER, X2, BONES, FINAL DESTINATION 2, THE LAST SUMARI, NEW YORK MINUTE, SCOOBY DOO 2, RESIDENT EVIL: APOCALYPSE, ELEKTRA, MR & MRS. SMITH, LAND OF THE DEAD, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, JOHN TUCKER MUST DIE, FIDO, FF2: RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER, GOOD LUCK CHUCK, RUSH HOUR 3, WAR, X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, YOUTH IN REVOLT, 2012, INCEPTION, and SALT - just to name a few.
She has since teamed up with colleague and friend Mike “Mitch” Mitchell to form M&M Stunt Rentals and M&M Studio Services. Does that name sound familiar? Well, M&M Studios were kind enough to let us film parts of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK at their location. If you have worked in Vancouver in film, you've at least heard of how instinctively and generously Melissa gives back to the film community. I have yet to meet this remarkable woman, but I have been on set in her home when she donated it as a location to a friend (our teacher who even came on to coordinate on DHIAT, the Lauro 'Lash' Chartrand) to film in. Badass and kind.
She is the queen of ass-kicking, taking hard knocks, doing the 'impossible', and creating memorable 'holy shit' sequences in films that you'll be rewinding to watch over and over again as a 2 Unit Director, Stunt Coordinator, Fight Choreographer, and Stunt Performer. In closing, Melissa Stubbs rocks. Hard. Maybe the rewinding commence.

Boo La La!!!
There is a hidden treasure for British Columbian, West Coasters to discover. Since we were little twisted twins, we would go in and look at all the rad. There we would find the means to properly celebrate the holiest of holidays, Halloween. We would become Beatrix Kiddo, GoGo, Elle Driver, Nancy (SIN CITY), Catwoman - my God, the number of times we have been Catwoman - Katana and Mileena, Sindel, Maharet and Mekare, Mary Jane Watson, and so on because of this fine establishment. It's a pity you can't play make believe everyday, unless you go into film making. That's a Bingo.
As you might know from reading earlier posts, we recently collaborated with the fantastic CJ Wallis of FortyFPS Productions on a project promoting the utterly fantastic Nokia N8, and there was a costumtunity - an opportunity for a costume. We met with our good friend and the shop's owner, Laurie Sluchinskiat Boo La La Costumes - Life's More Fun In Costume (and it is) - and she hooked us up with some incredibly beautiful and unique costumes for the short. It's not everyday that you can walk into a place and get a penguin mascot suit (that's right folks, twisted twin, Jen, is a majestic penguin) and a Starchild suit both - plus hundreds of other costumes that are just fabulous.
Boo La La prides itself with an inventory of over fifteen thousand costumes. Sorry no costumes for the kiddies here - and those little 'uns hog up all the inventory everywhere else anyhow. Not only does the store accommodate the casual and seasonal costumer but also styles for local theater and film productions with their expertise. Get Laurie to help you on a project and you're going to be a very lucky film maker indeed - the costumes worked wonderfully.
I've loved coming to this place for years and the team is just wonderful. We adore Laurie - she's just about the coolest lady ever and she always gets you the best stuff. If you need a wardrobe on this side of fantastic whether it be for film or fun, come by her shop for a boo or two...

Dexter Cockburn -- What An Artist
I am floored by all the kindness, support, and love we have received since stepping into the horror scene. There have been so many wonderful people and opportunities we have been given. One being introduced to the fabulous feminist and horror writer, Hannah Neurotica, who interviewed us in her edgy, awesome, and insightful zine - Ax Wound. If you haven't read this zine or heard about it before, educate yourself here. It's a must have for any horror fan.
Not only is it written intelligently by smart folks that know their horror and their writing, but the layout and the artwork is beautiful, too - which brings us to Dexter Cockburn. He is a talented Vancouver (hey, I live there!) artist who is responsible for cover lettering on Zine #3. He asked if he could use some photos and then surprised us with this incredible kind and touching piece about us. This quote made my day --
"I have a confession... When my daughter grows up & if she wants to make movies like the Soska twins , I would be hard-pressed to feel any prouder! :) Of course if my son wants to direct horror, he's got my blessing also... it would just seem cooler if it was Savara on the other side of the lens directing the splatter!"
That is one of nicest things I have ever heard. Let me try one back at you. We're filming our next feature in Vancouver, you ask Savara* (and your son, Sebastian*) if they are interested in visiting a movie set and we'll be sure to bring you out on a good day to see if it's something they might be into. That'll teach you for being nice to me and Jen, mwa ha ha. But in all seriousness, thank you for your great art and your considerate words.
Now, I took a look at your other artwork, Dexter - you saucy sir - and I loved what I saw. I've included examples for those of you that may be unfamiliar with The Comix Company and Dexter's work. It reminds me of some Hungarian sexy comics I found when I was little - men and women's sexuality satirized with clever proportions, portrayal, and situational humor. For those of you that are less cheeky, you certainly wandered onto the wrong site, eh? Dexter has a very hip and cool style of drawing - I enjoy his drawrings.
Dexter's piece ends with hoping that we keep this up long enough to inspire his daughter as she grows up. Rest assured, sir. We are too stubborn, driven, and insanely ambitious to ever stop. I am beyond honored for your kind words. If you want to see more of Dexter's artwork and the Comix Company, check it here! It's adult themed, so if you be prepared for the before-mentioned cheekiness.
~Sylv
*Mr. Cockburn has let me know the kids are a bit young still (under 3 years old), but will be visiting a future production. :)

Vancouver Loves Its DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK
Friday the 13th is one hell of a day, regarded as bad luck to some and celebrated by others. This Friday the 13th was one of great celebration as the cult classic, underground sensation, debut feature film from we Twisted Twins, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, made a long awaited premiere for the public at the beautiful Rio Theatre.
We arrive to the theatre early and find that there are already people lining up for the show. We sneak in, unnoticed, ninja style. We meet up with producer, MaryAnn Van Graven, who, like many other members of the DHIAT crew, doubled up on jobs on the project. She was also our incredible talented key make up artist. Our other beloved producers, our wonderful, supportive parents arrive shortly and we take to hiding, after a quick inspection in the projection room.
The green room is, in fact, a red room. We wait and here the audience arrive, but are unable to see them, so we have no idea how many people are out there, waiting to get themselves some Dead Hooker ;)
We wait. It's an incredible and indescribable feeling waiting to show your film to an audience (though I will try my best to describe it). You feel nervous and excited, terrified and happy. You hope so sincerely that the audience will enjoy the film, catch all the little jokes, laugh at all the big ones, be entertained, and, in this case, even inspired. When we finally emerge to thank our wonderful audience for attending, we're floored by the applause and cheers. We see our audience for the first time and couldn't be more grateful for having them there.
We thank our guests from the bottoms of our twisted little hearts and invite them up the street to Bandidas Taqueria and Cafe Kathmandu, two restaurants good enough to house us all for our after party.
We take our place among the audience in the darkness and wait.
The film starts... there's no greater feeling in the world than sitting in a theatre and hearing people react to a film you put everything you've got into. Every laugh, every cheer, every "oh God!" is incredible. At multiple times during the screening, our guests broke out in applause and cheers. In the darkness, sitting with together with our mom and MaryAnn at our sides while CJ busily made sure everything ran smoothly, we smiled, overjoyed that our audience loved the film and that we had been able to bring it back to the beautiful city where it all started and to the people who supported us and the film before they even got a chance to see it. To be surrounded by so many wonderful friends, some old and some new, it was simply a dream come true.
The film ends, and the audience erupts in cheers and applause. It's the most wonderful feeling ever.
At long last, we steal our way into the foyer to meet and greet our guests and thank them all for coming. A flurry of hugs, endless embraces, smiling faces, laughter, smiles. We're honored to give autographs and take photos with our wonderful audience. We are blown away to see so many old friends, many that we haven't seen in ages. We meet facebook friends for the first time in person. Hands are shaken, hugs are had, everyone is all smiles. We thank the incredible staff at the Rio for their kindness and professionalism. They're quite wonderful.
It's party time!
Off we head, just up the street and easily within walking distance (even in stilettos), to our after party! It's side by side, allowing room for all of our lovely guests and not overwhelming either restaurant. It's wonderful as we FINALLY get a chance to sit down and talk with everyone. We dart about, hugging, thanking, and talking about DHIAT and film. So many smiling faces, such a great feeling from both restaurants, and it's not just because of the abundant shots and pitchers ;)
It's also the birthdays of a VERY special couple, Miss Gory Rae (Horror Hostess Extraordinaire) and her beloved, Dissolved Paul. We twisted twosome are sure to show them how much we love them with a Spider en-crested chocolate cake and a little song.
We'd like to thank everyone from the bottoms of our twisted little hearts for coming out. We'd like to thank the Rio, Cafe Kathmandu, Bandidas Taqueria, all our wonderful guests, and our amazing cast and crew. There's nothing like showing your film in the city where it all began with true fans and friends. Your support means more to us than we can ever say. Thank you so very, very much.
Check out more pics from the night HERE!
And we promise, there's a lot more in store from your friendly neighborhood Twisted Twins...
X's and O's,
Jen and Sylv
