My Vagina Isn't My Resume - The Women of American Mary

"As I'm greeted raucously by the Soskas and Tristan Risk, I notice a willowy blonde sitting in the corner observing us. "Dammit," I think, "that's Katharine Isabelle. I didn't know she was going to be here." Sensing my surprise, Jen laughs and says, "This is Katie. She flew in last night."
Katharine stands and we shake hands. "Sorry," I say shyly, "but I didn't prepare for you." She smiles, then drops her head and makes an exaggerated sad face. Jen says, "It's okay. No one's
 prepared for Katie."
The Soskas are road warriors, relentlessly grinding it out on the film fest circuit the world over. I'm extremely curious about how they manage such an arduous schedule. I mention that I'm still recovering from the boozy karaoke party a few nights earlier, during which the Soskas commandeered the stage to the delight of the crowd and performed a passionate version of Aerosmith's "Dream On." If this is typical festival life, how do they manage it on a nonstop basis?

Sylvia Soska smiles, saying, "If we had the choice, we wouldn't do anything but this. It's kinda what we live for."

Fantastic Response from American Mary's American Premiere

"I've been covering horror movies for a while now, and over the years I've noticed a lot of very interesting genre films about women -- that are also written and directed by men. That's meant as a compliment. Indie filmmakers like Paul Sole
t (Grace), Mitchell Lichtenstein (Teeth), and Lucky McKee (May, The Woman) are clearly and admirably fascinated by females who exist in an environment of dark fiction, but let's be frank here: there should be more horror films about women -- that are also written and directed by women. The dark and disturbing, yet oddly accessible American Mary looks like a firm step in the right direction. Written and directed by a pair of twin sisters from Vancouver, American Mary is easily one of the most fascinating female-themed horror stories of the past few years, and it should absolutely serve to open a few more doors for the audacious and plainly talented Jen and Sylvia Soska." - Scott Weinberg, FearNET (full article)
"All of which leads rather too neatly to the latest gory slice of body horror making shockwaves around the cinematic world, and having its Northern Premiere at Grimmfest: Jen and Sylvia Soska’s darkly funny and at times deeply disturbing di
ssection of the cult of beauty, cosmetic surgery addiction, body image and body modification, American Mary.

Combining the visceral physicality and ambivalent perspectives of Cronenberg or Barker, with a kind of raised-eyebrow archness and cold-eyed camp grotesquerie worthy of John Waters, and featuring a stunning, emotional powerhouse performance from Katherine Isabelle, already a Body Horror icon from the Ginger Snaps films, it tells the story of impoverished medical student Mary Mason, who gets pulled into the shadowy underworld of illegal body modification surgery after she performs a few questionable procedures for a local mobster.

The Soskas know their stuff.

The film explores every aspect of body horror head on: sado-masochism, fetishism, physical transformation, fear of sex, discomfort with one’s own appearance, loss of control. It might almost serve as a primer for a whole sub genre.
"
- Steve Balshaw, Mancunian Matters (full article)

"American Mary is filled with splendid gore sequences, the odd humour and superb acting throughout. Ginger Snaps star Katharine Isabelle puts on a great performance in her role as Mary Mason and is still stunning as ever… The Soska sisters
seemed to convince viewers with this film how they are capable of making a truly entertaining and edge of your seat Horror flick. The Twisted Twins also make an appearance during the film, so keep an eye out for that…

The film is highly recommended to all viewers (except young children), as it is one of the most entertaining Horror films of 2012 along with The Cabin in the Woods and it will have something to satisfy almost any Horror fan. Humour, gore, Katharine Isabelle… What is not to like
?"
- Adam Chabbi, The Daily Horror (full article)

"American Mary isn't just the most startling and original horror film of the year, it's also a feature that announces the arrival of two very exciting talents to the genre in the shape of sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska." - Chris Tilly, IGN (full article)
"Katharine's character, Mary, was so compelling and the tone and production design of the film so distinctive (see it with a Goth chick you know, she'll love it), we liked it anyway and will definitely be checking out whatever Jen and Sylvi
a do next. The story focuses on the culture of underground body modification surgery, and thus a lot of the shocks in the movie were of the naked variety, including one (technically) full frontal shot of a woman who willingly had her nipples removed and vagina sewn shut to look more like a doll. Katharine’s non-nude streak continues, but considering she spends several scenes dressed in a corset, thigh-highs, and/or a latex apron, there’s still plenty to feast your eyes on here.
American Mary was definitely one of the more interesting Q&As we attended as Jen and Sylvia took the mic with co-star Tristan Risk wearing replicas of the (very revealing, by the way) ensemble Katharine wears in the film." - Skin Central, Mr. Skin (full article)
"But that was way back in 2010. What have they done for us lately? Many is the filmmaker that crashed and burned following a fast rise. Oh god, what if it was all a fluke?
Well, the Soskas are back with their sophomore feature, American Ma
ry, which had its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest last night. And I’m happy to report that the Twisted Twins’ success is no fluke. American Mary delivers the goods. It’s no Dead Hooker, but don’t despair; that’s a very good thing.
One of the most impressive things about Mary is how completely different it is from the Soskas’ debut. Where Dead Hooker in a Trunk was a gonzo thrill ride, American Mary is a frosty revenge thriller — all warm, pulsing viscera beneath a cool, steely surface." -Theron Neel, Planet Fury (full article)
"AMERICAN MARY is a huge step fowards after DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK (which I am a big fan of), and not just from a budgetary standpoint, but from a confidence level displayed in the writing and directing by the twins. It portends even greate
r works of art from these powerful, creative, and risk-taking filmmakers."
 Corey Mitchell, Bloody-Disgusting (full article)
"With American Mary, the Soskas present a unique canvas of surgical oddities and “freaks” not often seen on the screen, calling to mind some of the characters who would breeze through Nip/Tuck. However, the Soskas give them more purpose and heart than Ryan Murphy’s series did, creating a strong, eclectic gallery of personalities like Beatress (Tristan Risk) – a woman who transformed her visage to resemble Betty Boop and comes pretty damn close to stealing every scene she’s in.
Brian (Drive Angry) Pearson’s photography is gorgeous, shifting from one color palette to the next as we’re carried from Mary’s makeshift surgery room to the grungy environs of the strip club scene." - Ryan Turek, Shock Till You Drop (full article)
"With American Mary, the Sisters Soska definitively prove they’re more than just a pair of pretty faces by delivering a film that is not only a quantum leap from the previous feature but also, without getting to hyperbolic about it, represe
ntative of one of the most exciting new voices in the genre. Eschewing genre clichés and easy pandering, this sophomore effort delivers a textured, engaging and original effort that should deservedly break out amongst the horror faithful.

Get Your Own Fresh Dead Hooker and Hooker on Steroids Future Ambitions

Since the beginning of DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, Jen and I have come to learn first hand that there is no such thing as overnight success. To follow your dreams, to make something that is important to you, to having that something - even a crazy GRINDHOUSE-inspired flick about a dead hooker that finds herself in a group of don't give a shit twenty-something's firebird's trunk - reach an audience around the world takes dedication, time, and focus. It also takes a horror community that loves these kinds of films the way that you do, who back you up like that buddy you can call at 3am when shit hits the fan because that's how fucking awesome they are.

Theron Neel and Planet Fury have always been that buddy to us. Supporting the flick from it's 'woah, there's some Canadian movie about a dead hooker, lol' stages to today where the film has been released this past May 23rd in the UK, courtesy of Bounty Films, and Australia, through Monster Pictures, a television premiere on the Horror Channel, multiple repeats of that showing, and then August 3rd, when IFC Midnight bought the final regions, released the film on VOD and limited theatrical screenings throughout the US, and on January 31st, 2012 - their DVD release of the flick will be upon us.

"It's been a long haul for Jen and Sylvia Soska's Dead Hooker. What began as a film school project morphed into an exploitation classic that attained near-mythic status on the festival circuit and transformed the Soskas into indie darlings along the way.

Sadly, though you've likely read about this flick, you probably haven't seen it. But, thanks to the beneficence of the folks at IFC Midnight, on January 31 you’ll finally get the opportunity to enjoy the Twisted Twins' debut feature.
"

Read the entire piece here and/or here - better read both for good measure - to get all the goods as we speak briefly about upcoming AMERICAN MARY, an actual sequel to HOOKER following in Rodriguez's DESPERADO footsteps, and all the things DEAD HOOKER. Thank you to Theron for always supporting the little guy, the little guy has been able to travel the world because of your faith and backing. Not too many dead hookers get spread around this far.. that came out wrong.. aw, fuck it... this is a huge fucking thrill and we cannot believe that this day is almost upon us!

Thank you for reading, watching, tweeting, blogging, screening, sharing, and caring, girls and boys. The horror community consists of the greatest folks on the fucking planet and you are all living proof. You can preorder this chick here (fuck yeah).

Halloween Memories on Slammed & Damned

Boys and grrls, if you are avid readers of our Penny Dreadful Diary (and truly, why wouldn't you be?) you must be well acquainted with our beloved friend and exquisitely talented writer, reviewer, and interviewer, Theron Neel of Slammed & Damned as well as Planet Fury.

I hope all you fellow creatures of the night are recovered or recover-ing at this point. And hopefully, my darlings, you remember exactly what you did this Halloween, even if it's fuzzy patches that slam back into your mind like post traumatic stress disorder style acid flashbacks. We had the pleasure of chatting with Theron about our Halloweens past...

"We would look forward to it all year long. My parents thought it was funny because we would muchly prefer Halloween to Christmas, birthdays, anything else. There have been lots of folks that used to come over to me and say, “It’s not Halloween” because of my attire. Now, every day kind of is." ~ Sylvia Soska

"We’re very lucky to be able to have Halloween every day, but there is something undeniably special about Halloween. We’ve almost religiously dressed up every year. It makes me sad to hear “grownups” say that they don’t like Halloween and haven’t dressed up since they were kids. Where is it written or said that once you reach a certain age you have to stop having fun? And that’s really what Halloween is — a whole lot of demented fun." ~ Jen Soska

For the full Halloween Interview, please enjoy it RIGHT HERE!!!

And thank you, as always, Theron. You're absolutely wonderful.

Bloody Best!

A Twisted Twins Addams Family? Theron Neel scores the FIRST Interview

Wait a minute... aren't we smack dab in the middle of our AMERICAN MARY production? What is this craziness about wanting to take on yet another film right now? And what madness would make us want to take on a huge franchise that's has its rights owned by the powerful people at Paramount?

Well, we've always been a tad on the ambitious and insane side. After all, the very best of us are.

Yes, we are in the midst of our next highly anticipated project, AMERICAN MARY, which we've been rather tight lipped about. And yes, we absolutely do want to have the opportunity to make a Addams Family film. A remake? Oh, no. We don't care for those. Another story that encompasses everything we've all loved about the Addams that pays great tribute to the outstanding and timeless characters created by the late and great Charles Addams? That's the game plan.

Maybe you've heard rumblings about it in the inter~world. It's very true. We even sent out a formal press release saying we want to make this happen and need your help and support to make it possible.

We had the opportunity to speak with our dear friend and outstanding writer, reviewer, and interviewer, Theron Neel, on the subject. If you don't know, you really ought to know the man. He knows his shit and is a brilliant writer. Be sure to check out his kick ass site, Slammed & Damned, and catch him writing on a site we just adore, FanGirlTastic, run by the wonderful femme fatale, Heidi Honeycutt of the Viscera Film Festival.

The result? The kick ass interview and the first we've made talking about this venture.

Check out our FULL ADDAMS FAMILY INTERVIEW here on FanGirlTastic and Slammed & Damned.

And if you would see an Addams Family film made by us, please "like" the group and spread the word. After all, together we're an army.

Bloody Best!

Canada's Best Kept Secret Weapon

'Some people are just so talented that it really isn't fair. CJ Wallis is one of those people. You probably haven't heard of him, but Wallis is an enormously gifted director, actor, cinematographer, producer, editor, writer and musician. And to top it all off, I have it on good authority from a certain female FanGirlTastic staffer that he's cute too. Totally not fair.'

Stole the words right out of my mouth, Mr. Neel. I am speaking in reference to the mother-fucking spectacular article written by Theron Neel of FanGirlTastic.

For those of you new to the bloggings - catch up on the gentleman that is Theron Neel here and check out FanGirlTastic - the site for the fangirl that has everything but a ... - for wonderful informative pieces on everything a horror nerd could ever want and more. The piece to which I am referring is 'CJ Wallis - Canada's Best Kept Secret'.

And Theron, as usual, hits it all on the nose with his wonderfully written article and you really get to know this man who is personally and professionally, one of the most important men in my life.

'When not tending goal for his team, Wallis and his dad spent hours playing an improvised game called Minis, which was "essentially a basement hockey equivalent of Pong," Wallis recalls. "The room was fairly small and the puck was often some unnecessarily overactive bouncy ball, which made for a very fast, challenging and competitive game."

But even as Wallis was developing his shooting skills, he was discovering another obsession. "Being competitive sorts, heated debates would often escalate. So, I grabbed the family video camera and created 'the Net Cam.' All debates were quickly erased by reviewing the footage frame by frame instantly," he says. "I started to notice more and more than I was becoming obsessed with where the camera should be put to better capture everything happening in the room . . . and suddenly my hockey marriage had an adulterous filmmaking mistress."'

Now I could pull genius quotes from the pitch perfect article all day, but it would take away from the fun and pleasure of actually reading the piece - which what I suggest you do because it's a inside look to our group that doesn't get explored all too often. Click here and read and love and share and repeat - like shampooing and conditioning. I could go on on how 'stupidly talented' this man is, but Theron in his entertaining and witty, informative writing has it mastered in his article.

Thank you so kindly to Theron and FanGirlTastic for getting the secret out about CJ Wallis and his career, skills, and contributions. I love this article to insane amounts. After I post this, I am re-reading it. No joke. It's that fucking rad.

Teasing for a Bloody Good Cause

Theron Neel could break into my apartment, steal my PS3, kill my cats and tarantulas, and take my supply of energy drinks and he would still be one of the classiest and kindest gentlemen I have every had the pleasure of knowing. There is a big announcement brewing and Theron is in the know. If you are new to reading our diary, catch up on all the awesome here. Now that the whole class is caught up, let's move along, shall we?

"Those crazy Canadians lovingly known as the Twisted Twins — Jen and Sylvia Soska, on their birth certificates — are releasing another PSA for their favorite cause, the Massive Blood Drive. Their first PSA was so awesome and beloved by all that the sisters decided it had to be topped. And from what they told me, it absolutely has been."

To celebrate Women In Horror Recognition Month, Jen and I host a worldwide Massive Blood Drive. It's simple. Go to your local blood bank and donate any time in February. Host one in your local city or with a group of your friends. You get to do something good for people who are in desperate need. And all the cool kids are doing it (I overheard them talking about it before they proudly pronounced me a 'nerd' and inserted me into a nearby dumpster). Send us your pictures and stories and get presents.

In order to further inspire donation and get over needle phobia, we create a new PSA yearly to get people in the bleeding spirit. This year we collaborated with artists around the world to make a blood drive anthem, give a sense of unity (because that's really what feminism is about), and even announce who will be playing the title role in upcoming AMERICAN MARY with a cameo appearance in the video. Theron, being the good friend that he is, has been sworn to secrecy but has this to offer --

"Now, I can't speak her name, but I can tell you that the woman they've cast is a wonderful actress that you've enjoyed in past horror favorites. Wait, maybe you can guess. That would be fair, right?"

When does it all happen, what is going on, c'mon, Sylv, spill with the details. Well, the closest you will get is here - by reading the whole tantalizing teasing article. Tomorrow, the video. Be still my fangirl heart.

Theron Neel gets a peek at American Mary

We love Theron Neel. Not only has this very talented gentleman been a long time supporter of this Twisted Twosome and our DEAD HOOKER, but he is an incredibly gifted writer, articulate, intelligent, and well spoken. He launched a FULL WEEK of Soska sisters goodness for us filled with interviews, reviews, and things both wicked and awesome.

If you're a stranger to his site, naughty, naughty. Go rectify that little inequity and treat yourself to some good old fashioned brilliance here.

He has recently begun writing for the insatiable FANGIRLTASTIC site, the sexy new site and name for PRETTY SCARY. It's run by the gore~geous and gifted Heidi Martinuzzi who also heads up the Viscera Film Festival with the lovely femme fatale Shannon Lark. They are, by the by, currently seeking submissions for the 2011 fest and you can submit your film here.

But I digress... I'll leave that to Holden Caulfield and get back to creamy juicy center of this blog...

Being a close personal friend as well as someone we respect in this business, we couldn't help but give Theron a sneak peek at the AMERICAN MARY teaser (being officially released THIS SATURDAY on our site!!) and a little insider info. What did we say when we unsealed our wicked lips? Well, you'll just have to give it a read to see....

Check out Theron's FULL ARTICLE here!!

It's almost AMERICAN MARY time, boys and grrls!! This Christmas, we're catering to the naughty AND the nice. Something wicked this way comes...

Look forward to hearing from you all this Saturday!

Hear ye, Hear ye - Tis Twisted Twins Week!

No, we haven't gone narcissistically insane. This is a proud proclamation made by our friend, Theron Neel, of Slammed & Damned. Starting July 12th, Theron took an in depth look not only at 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk' but all of our other projects, as well as a review of the film and a very fun interview with Jen and I. He says it best himself.

"Welcome to a very special week here at Slammed & Damned. In honor of Jen and Sylvia Soska, those kickass Canadian twins responsible for the recent grindhouse film phenomenon known as Dead Hooker in a Trunk, I hereby declare this to be Twisted Twins Week. Over the next few days, we’re going to be taking an in-depth look at Jen and Sylv’s work. On Wednesday, I’ll be reviewing the new, final cut of Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and on Friday, I’ll have an exhaustive interview with these two vixens from Vancouver. But today, I want to take a look at three short films the Soskas made before their Dead Hooker came to light."

There are been shorts and PSAs that we have worked on. Theron has taken an in depth look at these projects in the first part of his three-part article.

Next, Theron (who has seen the final cut of Hooker, and its previous cut - at the DOA BloodBath Film Fest) goes into a lock, stock, and barrel review of the final cut. He has plenty of lovely things to say that would make even a deceased prostitute blush.

"Over the years, Canada has produced some of the most interesting voices in horror. Bob Clark, David Cronenberg and John Fawcett are just some of the directors to emerge from the Great White North with singular voices and cool films. And with a forceful little flick called Dead Hooker in a Trunk, Vancouver-based filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska have pretty much grabbed the indie horror film community by the collar and demanded admission to this boys club. Word to the wise: If I were you, I wouldn’t argue with them. I’ve seen what they can do.

I first saw Dead Hooker in a Trunk a few months ago at a horror film fest. I’d never heard of the movie or its makers, but when I saw that title, I knew it was the one film I had to see that day.

As we sat in the darkened theater and this steamroller of a film plowed over the audience, my companions and I were overwhelmed by the action onscreen. The auditorium filled with gasps and nervous giggles from people that kept peeking at each other with wide-eyed looks that said, “Did they just do that?” When the movie ended, there was a slight pause while everyone oriented themselves, then the room filled with raucous applause. I left the theater knowing I’d just seen something that was as much a statement of purpose as it was an entertainment."

Okay, now go read everything he says in his article and get re-excited about the film! It's reviews like this that reignite one's excitement in film making. I'm very proud to be a part of something that gets people to talking this way. It's a great review for those of you who haven't yet had the chance to see the film or if you are trying to describe it to your friends.

Lastly, comes the interview we had with Theron. 'But, Sylvia' you say, 'I've read your interviews before and you always yap about the same shit. I feel I already know you and Jen well.' To that I say, 'No, I don't!' (defensively) But in all truth, we do talk about some personal stuff that we haven't before so I think you're getting too smart for yourself and should just read the fucking interview already. Here's the juicy intro.

"The Canadian filmmaking team Jen and Sylvia Soska are a pair of identical twins who have made one of the most talked about independent movies of the year. The tale of four people with a cool car and truly terrible luck, Dead Hooker in a Trunk is a bloody, brutal and often funny flick that takes more twists and turns than a snake on hot pavement. With little more than a provocative title and a handful of friends, these two scrappy young ladies went on to write, direct and star in one of the most impressive feature film debuts in recent memory. Recently, during a rare break, the Soskas sat down with Slammed & Damned for a talk about lighthearted violence, creating things you might not expect and, of course, the movie they lovingly refer to as “our Hooker.”"

Mad, crazy, high-fiving, fist-bumping props to our man, Theron Neel, not only for his phenomenal articles, but also for seeing the words 'Dead Hooker in a Trunk' and thinking it was his kind of film. A little hooker can go quite far, but it can only travel the world with support and spreading the word like Theron did. Respect, sir, respect.
