See American Mary at The Rio Theatre with Killer Exclusives
The Rio Theatre is a staple in the Vancouver scene for giving a cool venue for filmmakers to screen their work. These are the guys and gals that first screened Dead Hooker in a Trunk, have us out for their Horror Nights, and fought the law and won to keep their excellent theatre serving drinks and kicking ass.
I am honored to have American Mary screening at the theatre and because this theatre is so special and the film itself is a testament to Vancouver talent, we are doing something very special and exclusive.
May 31st you will be to meet the monster makers of MASTERSFX behind the characters and creations you see in the film. You will get to meet and get your photo with a very special piece from the film like no other, and be sure to ask them how they make that stuff look so real in the Q & A. Also, look out for our beloved dark doctors Clay St. Thomas and Nelson Wong at the screening.
June 3rd, Beatress Johnson, Tristan Risk will be there for a Q & A which you don’t want to miss as she is phenomenal in the film and the girl of our horror dreams.
Please get the word out, share the event, and make sure you can get to the screenings. We don’t have too many Canadian generated films like this with full Canadian teams like this and the film really shows off how badass our industry is!!

My Other Me
Josh Laner (Canada, 2012)
At the Rio Grind Film Festival Friday, November 2 at 5:00 pm.
My Other Me embodies the things that we've always loved most about Halloween [and] acting... Cosplay [has] really become it's own art form and form of self-expression; that ability to pull on someone else's skin and be everything or anything you ever wanted to be. Their bravery and self discovery is something we are just in awe of. It's a heart-warming, beautiful film that makes you want to discover your 'other me'. - Jen and Sylvia Soska

The American Scream Michael Stephenson (USA, 2012)
Winner - Best Documentary Fantastic Fest; Official Selection Telluride Horror Show, Starz Denver Film Festival

Clearly a labor of love from all involved, The American Scream is a
warm and touching look at three families doing what they love with what they

A terrific documentary, one that assures us all that

At the Rio Grind Film Festival Sunday, November 4 at 2:00 pm
Nightmare Factory shines a light on a man and a profession that has been a long time love of ours. Thank God Greg Nicotero quit med school and built up the legendary KNB FX. His work has consistently blown audiences away along with his cutting edge approaches. He is the go-to man of our personal heroes Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. Nicotero is a Hollywood treasure, and this film gorgeously demonstrates just why KNB FX is the prolific monster that it is today. - Jen and Sylvia Soska

Twitch Film Exclusive at the Mary Cast & Crew Screening
The buzz surrounding Canadian identical twin horror directors Jen and Sylvia Soska is growing increasingly loud, despite the fact that their second feature film, American Mary, has yet to even premiere. Following the unlikely success of their ultra-low-budget grindhouse flick Dead Hooker in a Trunk, the girls quietly cultivated both a reputation and a serious fan base that includes director Eli Roth. This past Monday, something very special happened for the cast & crew that came together to create a film called AMERICAN MARY - we reunited in the Rio Theatre to watch the film together for the first time. If you were part of the creation of the film, you had the opportunity to see her exclusively for the first time - also, if you were the brilliant Rachel Fox of Twitch Film, you got to see the film and be the very first person to speak to the cast that night.
On Monday, I attended a private screening for cast and crew at the Rio Theatre in the Soska's hometown of Vancouver, where the film was shot. American Mary is the story of broke medical student Mary Mason, who becomes disillusioned enough with the "establishment" to drop out when she discovers a more lucrative way to make use of her surgical skills in the dangerous, underground world of extreme body modification. Starring Vancouverite Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, Freddy vs. Jason) and an eye-popping array of old-school prosthetics and special effects courtesy of Todd Masters and MastersFX (True Blood, Slither), the film is an homage to the kind of classic horror movies Jen and Sylvia grew up watching. "We're such horror nerds," Jen tells me.
Following the screening, the jubilant directors (donning a pair of matching dresses worn by Mary in the film) brought their own Mary, actress Katharine Isabelle, up on stage for a round of applause. Sylvia issued a heartfelt apology for "covering her in so much blood, which she hated. But it was worth it!" Isabelle seemed both emotional and overwhelmed. "I'm very happy. I had a little bit of anxiety going in, but I knew that it would be good because of these girls. It turned out to be just wonderful. I love you two."I want thank Rachel for coming out to the screening and having a chat with us, Katharine Isabelle (Mary Mason), Tristan Risk (Beatress Johnson), and John Emmet Tracy (Detective Dolor) following the screening. Making this film was the most important thing I have ever done in my life and I have never been more proud. The team you saw in the theatre that night were the ones responsible for making AMERICAN MARY possible.
Want to know Katie's original reaction to the film, what it is like to have identical directresses on set, what it was like to bring Beatress to life with her Masters FX makeover, how it was creating the film, and why is there a dedication at the end of the film to Eli Roth? Read the whole fucking wicked piece right here!

Horror Nights at the Rio Presents SUICIDE CLUB!
Showing such a rad film that won 'Most Ground-Breaking Film' at the Fantasia Film Festival, that has developed a cult following for its highly controversial subject matter and its excessive ultra gore seems like show enough, but these days you need to get the epitome of bang for your buck and with a town as lively and loving of horror as Vancouver - it had to be a fuck of a show.
First a totally winged horror show trivia (where admittedly, I was the only one who didn't know the answer to my own question), then opening the show was a SUICIDE CLUB themed bloody number by AMERICAN MARY alumnus Tristan Risk and the Queen of Halloween, Spooksy DeLune.
After getting soaked in the gushing fake red stuff with two of the city's most beautiful and talented burlesque performers, what can you do to top that? Real blood and there's only one man for the job, the human tackle box, our flesh art consultant from AMERICAN MARY, and one of the coolest guys on the scene, Russ Foxx.
But that is not all. Jen and I fell hard for the performance of one of the standout stars of the film, Rolly Teranishi. Jen got in touch with Rolly's team and was able to get an exclusive to this event opening for the film from Genesis himself, Mr. Rolly Teranishi.
The show was a blast - and the first of many to come. Always with a big show, special surprises, and prizes for those in attendance.
A very huge and humble thanks to everyone who made the event possible, the show a success, and the team at the Rio that always supports the indie flicks and filmmakers. See you guys next month, and for many months to come!
Loved getting to meet so many of you the other night and share a deeply disturbed love of horror. The horror community consists of the best people on the planet - this evening just re-confirmed it.

Bloodshots, Twins, and More Twins!!
Feeling a little evil? Well, it is that time of year. Speaking of evil - allow me to introduce you to the very talented Evil Patrick Shannon who used his powers to make our blue steel shine. Why Evil? Clickity click right here for a side trip into his rad filmmaking and photography stylings.
We were lucky enough to be able to attend last night's BLOODSHOTS screenings at the fabulous Rio Theater in Vancouver. But what is BLOODSHOTS? Allow me...
"As hundreds of DV filmmakers the world over have already learned, making a short film in one weekend can be terrifying.
Lack of sleep is just the beginning of your problems when you are trying to corral actors into repeating their performance with more energy at 5 in the morning and you know you have only got another 6 hours to get a final edit of your masterpiece put together. Well, start brewing your coffee now, because the people who brought you Vancouver’s CINEMUERTE FILM FESTIVAL (1999-2005) are getting set to bring you the 8th annual BloodShots 48-Hour Horror Filmmaking Contest – 25 Teams of filmmakers all fighting against the clock to make the best horror film they possibly can. There will be celebrity judges, fabulous prizes and several tons of fake blood!"
In 2009, we did compete in the BLOODSHOTS and it was a fucking trip. I had a great time - first time we collaborated with Miss Paula Lindberg who would go on to be our Ruby RealGirl in upcoming AMERICAN MARY. Here it is for a boo or two -- BADGIRLS --
We didn't win, the silence in the room was deafening - but I take that as a compliment. That year's competitors to beat were CHLOE AND ATTIE - starring my new favorite pair of twins, Joyce and Jacqueline Robbins, and JACK - made my friends that almost always kick my ass in these fast film projects.
Both are excellent shorts and please click on them to see their horrifically awesome, very different takes on the genre.
So there was a suggestion that we double mint girls - the four of us - should collaborate and I think that's a fucking fantastic idea. You can never have enough twins and these ladies are talented as all holy hell! Keep an eye for them.
Their BLOODSHOT - CHLOE AND ATTIE - is turning into a feature, there was a Kickstarter that passed very successfully - but if you ever want to put money into helping finance a film, pick this one because it will be fucking epic.

Enter the Zeppo
ZEPPO.
"Zeppo was the youngest of the five brothers. As a boy he was constantly involved in fights, which unlike Harpo or Groucho, he would win. He had a reputation for being quite the hooligan. It's always been Marx legend that Zeppo was placed into the act so that Minnie could keep him out of trouble.
He took over the straight man and romantic lead roles from older brother Gummo. He always seemed to be in the background, acting as a foil for Chico or Groucho.
According to a 1925 newspaper article, he also made a solo appearance in the Adolphe Menjou comedy A Kiss in the Dark, but no known copy of the film exists, and it is not clear if he actually appeared in the finished film.
It always seemed to Zeppo that he stood in everyone else's shadow. He hated not being allowed to be a comedian on stage. According to his brothers he was the funniest of them all. Groucho is quoted as saying "When I had my appendix out, Zeppo took over for me. He was so good that it made me get better quicker". After Zeppo left the act, each film would have a Zeppo-like actor in it and none of them were as good at it as he was."
Now, admittedly, I'm totally biased. I LOVE every single member of this group. BIG time. I've seen them each in separate ventures and when I learned that ALL THREE of these incredible musicians will be joining forces, it was like someone told me they combined chocolate and bacon and somehow added alcohol. Perfect.
And ZEPPO will be making their debut in an environment that a Zeppo thrives in.
In battle.
Yes, ZEPPO with be smashing into the spotlight in Vancouver in a highly anticipated BATTLE OF THE BANDS!!! It'll be at the RIO THEATRE, 1660 East Broadway. Doors at 5pm sharp. ALL AGES are permitted and they are licensed (it is unconfirmed if they'll be serving chocolate-bacon shots, but fingers crossed). Advanced tickets are $10 a pop.
For more info, check out: SUPERNOVA.COM/ROGERSBATTLE
We Twisted Twins will be shooting the show, so stop by and say, "hi".
See you all there.

Vancouver Loves Its DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK
Friday the 13th is one hell of a day, regarded as bad luck to some and celebrated by others. This Friday the 13th was one of great celebration as the cult classic, underground sensation, debut feature film from we Twisted Twins, DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK, made a long awaited premiere for the public at the beautiful Rio Theatre.
We arrive to the theatre early and find that there are already people lining up for the show. We sneak in, unnoticed, ninja style. We meet up with producer, MaryAnn Van Graven, who, like many other members of the DHIAT crew, doubled up on jobs on the project. She was also our incredible talented key make up artist. Our other beloved producers, our wonderful, supportive parents arrive shortly and we take to hiding, after a quick inspection in the projection room.
The green room is, in fact, a red room. We wait and here the audience arrive, but are unable to see them, so we have no idea how many people are out there, waiting to get themselves some Dead Hooker ;)
We wait. It's an incredible and indescribable feeling waiting to show your film to an audience (though I will try my best to describe it). You feel nervous and excited, terrified and happy. You hope so sincerely that the audience will enjoy the film, catch all the little jokes, laugh at all the big ones, be entertained, and, in this case, even inspired. When we finally emerge to thank our wonderful audience for attending, we're floored by the applause and cheers. We see our audience for the first time and couldn't be more grateful for having them there.
We thank our guests from the bottoms of our twisted little hearts and invite them up the street to Bandidas Taqueria and Cafe Kathmandu, two restaurants good enough to house us all for our after party.
We take our place among the audience in the darkness and wait.
The film starts... there's no greater feeling in the world than sitting in a theatre and hearing people react to a film you put everything you've got into. Every laugh, every cheer, every "oh God!" is incredible. At multiple times during the screening, our guests broke out in applause and cheers. In the darkness, sitting with together with our mom and MaryAnn at our sides while CJ busily made sure everything ran smoothly, we smiled, overjoyed that our audience loved the film and that we had been able to bring it back to the beautiful city where it all started and to the people who supported us and the film before they even got a chance to see it. To be surrounded by so many wonderful friends, some old and some new, it was simply a dream come true.
The film ends, and the audience erupts in cheers and applause. It's the most wonderful feeling ever.
At long last, we steal our way into the foyer to meet and greet our guests and thank them all for coming. A flurry of hugs, endless embraces, smiling faces, laughter, smiles. We're honored to give autographs and take photos with our wonderful audience. We are blown away to see so many old friends, many that we haven't seen in ages. We meet facebook friends for the first time in person. Hands are shaken, hugs are had, everyone is all smiles. We thank the incredible staff at the Rio for their kindness and professionalism. They're quite wonderful.
It's party time!
Off we head, just up the street and easily within walking distance (even in stilettos), to our after party! It's side by side, allowing room for all of our lovely guests and not overwhelming either restaurant. It's wonderful as we FINALLY get a chance to sit down and talk with everyone. We dart about, hugging, thanking, and talking about DHIAT and film. So many smiling faces, such a great feeling from both restaurants, and it's not just because of the abundant shots and pitchers ;)
It's also the birthdays of a VERY special couple, Miss Gory Rae (Horror Hostess Extraordinaire) and her beloved, Dissolved Paul. We twisted twosome are sure to show them how much we love them with a Spider en-crested chocolate cake and a little song.
We'd like to thank everyone from the bottoms of our twisted little hearts for coming out. We'd like to thank the Rio, Cafe Kathmandu, Bandidas Taqueria, all our wonderful guests, and our amazing cast and crew. There's nothing like showing your film in the city where it all began with true fans and friends. Your support means more to us than we can ever say. Thank you so very, very much.
Check out more pics from the night HERE!
And we promise, there's a lot more in store from your friendly neighborhood Twisted Twins...

"You should check out the Soska Sisters, who made a film called Dead Hooker In A Trunk. They're on MySpace. They made it low budget and it's fucking awesome. It's really violent and the stunts are superb. They are two Canadian twin sisters who made a feature that they wrote, produced, directed, and starred in. And it's fantastic."~Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever)
After traveling the world, winning multiple awards, and appearing in numerous film festivals, film makers known best as the Twisted Twins, Jen and Sylvia Soska, bring their critically acclaimed, underground sensation DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK back to the city that started it all, beautiful Vancouver. For one night only, the film will be showing for the first time open to the public. The film has been demanded by fans to be brought back to the city where it was created and the Soska Sisters couldn't be happier to, at long last, give the people what they want!

DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK is a triumph in independent film making. In the vein of Robert Rodriguez and his infamous debut feature, El Mariachi, the Twisted Twins set out to make a film with little more than an unconventional idea, a ton of ambition, and a few dedicated friends. The result is a throw back to and revitalization of the glorious and gore~geous grind house films of the past.
Never backing down from a challenge, the Soska Sisters persevered despite overwhelming criticism that their vision was too grand, their action too complex, and their proposed budget was too modest to achieve such an ambitious goal. The result of their and their team's efforts is an underground sensation that is a beautiful blend of the best aspects of horror and action with a compelling story line and memorable characters.
"Dead Hooker In A Trunk" has unapologetic violence handled with whimsical humor and creative story telling. Their greatest ambition is that their film will inspire others to set out and make their own dreams happen for themselves, not just limited to film, but in any and every part of their lives.
"It's the most disturbing feel-good movie I've ever seen. Funny, violent, gory, unsettling, gratuitous, excessive, and kick-ass, the flick the Soska Twins have delivered is the unlikely combination of utterly derivative and wholly original. At various points, I was amazed, amused, appalled, grossed out, disgusted, delighted, confused, and restless - but never bored. It's nice to know that women can make a film that is as bizarre and fucked up as anything made by a male. It also disproves the conception that all Canadians are nice and normal."~Theron Neel, theronneel.com
So for ONE NIGHT ONLY, come down the Rio Theatre on August Friday the 13th and see the film that audiences and reviewers have been raving about!
~Hannah Neurotica, Ax Wound
"Insanely entertaining punk rock gritty mayhem by badass twins who know how to unfold a twisted tale."
~Andrew McQuade, Gorezone Magazine
"I was totally hooked by the dialogue and the sheer 'where-the-fuck-is-this-goingness' of it all."
~Keri O'Shea
"The Soska Sisters surely could re~ignite the horror-exploitation genre with their performance in their film and then some!"
"Sassy, hilarious, genuinely entertaining film making done with a genius cinematic eye. These chicks have bigger balls than the male auteurs they just put to shame. And they would probably flash them at you."~Elisabeth Fies, Bleedfest Film Festival
~Jeff Atencio, thejadedviewer.blogspot.com
"A cult classic in waiting and a hidden gem in indie film making. I was pleasantly surprised by the insanity of it all."
"This film delivers in every sense of the word; this is an extremely fun film that has witty dialogue, strong (female) characters, and enough “grindhouse” attitude to satisfy even the hardcore lover of exploitation flicks."~Scott Shoyer, anythinghorror.com
"To say Dead Hooker In A Trunk is a demure title for a film would be an understatement, and a flat out lie. It's a supremely polarizing title. You can assume you will either love it or hate it just from the heading. The point to be made is, Dead Hooker In A Trunk is one of the best films this year. From start to finish it holds its own. There's no pithy Diablo Cody dialogue or half-ass attempts at moral constitutions. It is a full on assault of your senses, eviscerating any stereotypes that may have sprouted from those unenthused over the title, Dead Hooker In A Trunk."~Kristy Jett, dreadcentral.com
~John Gholson, cinematical.com
"As entertaining as it is completely ridiculous."
~Peter Hall, horrorsquad.com
"Irreverent comedy perverted by a love for the red stuff and characters free from the shackles of civility and morality."
But, don't take their word for it. Come out and experience DEAD HOOKER IN A TRUNK for yourselves. Don't miss out on the night that everyone's going to be talking about!!
