It took a lot longer than usual this year--thank you, day job!--but earlier this week, I was proud to finally release the complete list of winners for the 5th annual Cyber Horror Awards! I encourage everyone to head right over to the official page of the awards to find out all the winners, as voted on by the online horror journalism community.
Since 2009, the CHAs have been the only annual horror movie awards voted on exclusively by bloggers and other online critics. It's always a blast putting them together, and always fun to recognize the best in horror cinema each year. This year was quite an interesting one! For the first time, the awards were not dominated by one big movie, but rather by two: Drew Goddard's The Cabin the Woods and Ridley Scott's Prometheus. For the most part, Scott's Alien quasi-prequel snagged prizes in the more technical areas, while Goddard's meta-horror chestnut received more of the content-driven awards--which is pretty spot-on. Also, it's worth noting that this year saw the fewest amount of films winning awards, with only four. However, they were arguably the four best horror films of 2012, which makes me happy.
We saw a tie for David Cronenberg Award for Best Director, and a winner of the Dwight Frye Award for Best Supporting Actor who received more votes than all the other nominees combined! Ti West's The Innkeepers won three awards, and two of them were the Jamie Lee Curtis Award for Best Actress and the Linnea Quigley Award for Best Supporting Actress--a testament to that movie's strong female performances.
For the complete lowdown on all the winners, please proceed directly to the official Cyber Horror Awards page! And as always, I'm eternally grateful to the luminaries who took the time out to cast their votes this year:
Matt-Suzaka of Chuck Norris Ate My Baby
Dod March of The WGON Helicopter

Better Late Than Never: Announcing the Nominees for the 5th Annual CYBER HORROR AWARDS
It all started four years ago as a novel idea... how interesting would it be to give the horror blogosphere a platform from which to praise the best in horror movies each year? Other critic-based movie awards exist out there, so what about one for online horror journalists--who happen to be among the most opinionated, vocal critics of them all? So I came up with the Cyber Horror Awards, taking advantage of the connections I had made in the online horror world to create a system that could be used to recognize greatness in horror cinema each year.
Each year, I reach out to a select group of notables to help me select nominees in 13 different categories. Once that's done, the official ballot is emailed to scores of online horror critics (this year that number reached nearly 150), both blogger and non-blogger alike, asking them to select their choices. And then, at long last, the winners are declared over at the official home of the Cyber Horror Awards. Needless to say, this is all happening a few months later this year than I'd normally like, but hey, sometimes real life can be a bit of a nuisance.
Speaking of the official CHA website, by going there you can check out the official list of this year's nominees, highlighting some of the best and brightest the horror genre had to offer in 2012. It's quite an interesting field this time out... In previous years, a single movie usually dominated the nominees: 2008 was the year of Let the Right One In; in 2009 it was Trick 'r Treat; 2010 was dominated by Black Swan; and last year it was Attack the Block. This year, however, there are three films which are running neck-and-neck: The Woman in Black, with 10 nominations; The Cabin in the Woods, with 11 nominations; and Prometheus, with a whopping 12 out of 13 nominations (all that was missing was Best Supporting Actor... poor Idris Elba.) The Innkeepers also made a significant showing with 6 nominations.
But enough jibber-jabber. To give you a taste, our nominees for the Val Lewton Award for Best Horror Film of the Year are:
- Prometheus
- The Cabin in the Woods
- The Woman in Black
- The Innkeepers
- Sinister
And now, I leave you with a handy guide to all the awards and their previous winners:

Announcing the 4th Annual Cyber Horror Award Nominees!
And now, here I am, announcing the nominees for the fourth annual awards. I'd like to thank all the writers who get into the fun of this whole thing, and who take time out to vote each year. I'd like to specifically thank those who helped me put together the nominations this year: Heather Buckley of Dread Central, Stoker Award-winning author Vince Liaguno, League of Tana Tea Drinkers head honcho John Cozzoli, Christine Hadden of Fangoria.com, and Unkle Lancifer of Kindertrauma.
This year turned out to have a better crop of horror flicks than I originally thought, since I snuck in a whole bunch of last-minute viewing during the nominating process. We've got quite a fascinating list of nominees, which you can check out in its entirety over at the official Cyber Horror Awards website. In the meantime, allow me to whet your appetite with this year's nominees for the Val Lewton Award for Best Horror Film of 2011:
- Attack the Block, Studio Canal
- Troll Hunter, Filmkameratene A/S
- Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Reliance Big Pictures/Loubyloo Productions
- Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, Miramax/FilmDistrict
- Insidious, FilmDistrict/Stage 6 Films
Expect the winners in all 13 categories to be tabulated and announced by the middle of next month. In the meantime, I'll be sitting back and letting those ballots keep rolling in...

Announcing the 3rd Annual Cyber Horror Awards!
A plethora of powerhouse participants from across the horror blogosphere--including the likes of former TV Guide columnist Maitland McDonagh, Cinematical's Scott Weinberg, Rondo-winner Max Cheney, and Horror-Movie-a-Day's Brian Collins--sent in their two cents on the best that horror cinema had to offer in 2010. Its the only horror film awards voted on exclusively by the online horror journalism community, and I'm proud to present it for the third year running!
The big story this year was, of course, Black Swan, which landed a total of eight of the 13 CHAs. Not too hard to predict, especially in the case of Natalie Portman--who can now add the coveted CHA right next to that Oscar on her mantle. The Wolfman and Shutter Island also walked away with a couple each, and even the sci-fi horror flick Splice snagged one for the fascinating performance of Delphine Chaneac. For the complete list of winners, head over to the official Cyber Horror Awards website now!
And thanks to all the esteemed writers who voted this year:
Matt-Suzaka of Chuck Norris Ate My Baby

Announcing the Nominees for the 2nd Annual Cyber Horror Awards!
The time is upon us again. Long-time readers may remember this from last year, many of you are new to it. The CHAs are, to my knowledge, the only horror movie awards voted on exclusively by online horror bloggers and writers, and I'm happy to be hosting it for the second year. And they said it wouldn't last! Well, actually, no one said that. Anyway, moving right along...
Just like last year, I've enlisted the help of some of the best and brightest online horror critics and writers out there, and I'm proud to say that the number of invited voters is nearly triple what it was last year. Which reminds me--I have made every effort to include all of you, but please, if you're a horror blogger or online horror critic with whom I'm familiar, and you find that you haven't received a ballot, do not take offense. In any undertaking like this, some folks are bound to slip through the cracks. So just be so kind as to send me a gentle reminder, and I will rectify the situation post-haste!
Unlike last year, when I did all the nominating by my lonesome, this year I invited LoTT-D founder John Cozzoli and horror critic/author John Kenneth Muir to take part, as well. I think it's a pretty solid and eclectic list of nominees. For example, here I present to you the 2009 Cyber Horror Award nominees for Best Film:
- Drag Me to Hell
- Trick 'r Treat
- Zombieland
- Thirst
- Grace
What will happen now is that between this week and the first week of March, ballots will be coming in. I will tally up said ballots, and announce the award winners by the end of that first week of March. Exciting, right? Also, for the voters, keep in mind when you're checking out the nominees, and find you disagree vehemently with the choices--write-ins are always more than welcome! The only requirement is that it be a film that was released--either to theaters (film festivals don't count) or direct to video--during 2009.
This year's awards are shaping up to be even cooler than last year's and I'm honored to have a bunch of really great participants to make it as legit as possible. Hell, last year I even got some thank-you responses from winners like David Hackl, which you can read on the right-hand sidebar of the awards site. So here's to recognizing the best of 2009, and celebrating the one thing that unites us all--the love of horror films!

VAULT VLOG: Cyber Horror Award Nominees Coming This Week!
Monday, January 4, 2010
The 2nd Annual Cyber Horror Awards Are Coming!
Those who have been following the VoH for a while will recall last year's inaugural awards, in which a select group of horror bloggers and other online writers were asked to take part in picking the best of the best in horror in 2008. If not, then you can find a quick refresher here at the CHAs' official website.
This year, for the first time, I've instituted an actual nominating committee, so it won't be only yours truly dictating what everyone can vote on (although write-ins are always welcome, anyway). I'm happy to announce that the committee includes James Zahn, Fangoria Entertainment's Director of New Media; John Cozzoli, founder of the League of Tana Tea-Drinkers (LoTT-D); and award-winning horror critic and author John Kenneth Muir; in addition to little ol' me.
By the beginning of next month, I'm hoping to have a definitive list of nominees, which will then be sent out to a wide array of online horror bloggers and writers--a list greatly increased from the original awards last year. In fact, if you're one of my esteemed colleagues reading this right now, then chances are you can expect a ballot in your inbox at some point in early February!
So sit tight kiddies, because the 2009 CHAs are on the way!

Announcing the Nominees for the First-Ever Cyber Horror Awards!
Dear readers, I'm a simple man, with simple dreams. One of those dreams was to create the first horror film awards ever determined by the online horror community. And now, thanks to the associations I've made via the VoH, that dream is soon to become a reality.
It's simple, really. There has never been a set of awards recognizing excellence in horror, as voted upon by the writers/bloggers whose passion it is to cover the genre on the internet. With our world transforming the way it has, online writers and bloggers have gained an amazing level of visibility in mainstream culture--some would say even supplanting the role enjoyed by traditional film critics. They have their awards, why shouldn't we have ours?
To that end, I have assembled some of the best and brightest of those who dedicate themselves to all things terrifying, many of which have taken part in the past in the Vault's "Cyber-Horror Elite" lists. As I write this, in fact, they are deliberating the list of nominees you're about to read. The results will be tallied at the end of he month.
It's an idea whose time has come: The web's first horror movie awards.
