Notes:
For those of you who don't already know, the Union tour blended the two most recognizable lineups of Yes; the classic '70's version and the 90125 era of the band. The result is among other things, that you get to experience two guitar virtuosos in the persons of Steve Howe and Trevor Rabin. The presentation on this dvd is impeccable and should not be missed if you are a fan of any era of Yes.

I had transferred this couple of tapes from RLR collection already, but when I listened back the recording was running way too fast. So I took the tapes back and transferred them again using a pitch correction. I hope I captured the right speed.

Overall, this is a low generation with low hiss. It must have been recorded with professional device because at various times the taper adjusts the recording volume. By far not perfect recording but still enjoyable. You kind of "smell" the ambience from a typical show of the 70´s there...

Some of our readers may recall a release from several years ago titled "Rehearsal Tales", a single CD containing a partial show from Quebec, April 18, 1979. Although the track listing had a couple of errors, the music contained on that disc represented the finest quality available of any yes concert on bootleg disc. In fact, it rivaled any official release in range, balance, and performance. The original release was very limited in numbers and it wasn't long before some of the bigger bootleg companies began making their own copies of this disc.

As the story goes, Yes was recording many of their 1979 shows on a mobile multi-track studio for release of an official live set to celebrate the groups ten year anniversary. The project was even announced to the press and then scrapped. Somehow (you know how these things happen!) a stereo mix-down from the quebec show found its way into the hands of a collector who unwittingly traded it to a bootlegger. Of course, as usually happens with bootlegs of outstanding quality, the bootlegger himself was bootlegged (at least 3 different times). All versions of this single disc were worth picking up, as little was lost in the transition from one CD to the next.

That is until now. Dynamite Studio, a Japanese outfit with reasonably good circulation in the US has finally released the complete show, making all the previously available single CD versions obsolete.

This double CD is nearly flawless! I say nearly because there is one minor edit towards the end of "Starship Trooper" which also appeared on the "Rehearsal Tales" disc. This distortion is said to be on the original master tape, and indeed it seems that is probably the case. The highs on this CD don't get any higher. The bottom end will rattle your walls, but, save for the mentioned segment, they will rattle your walls with perfect clarity. This set HAS to rate in the top 10 boots of all time. You can even hear the whale songs that Yes used between songs, for goodness sake. The audience is almost invisible in the mix. The ICE newsletter has occasionally coined the phrase "bootleg hall of fame" in their writings. If I had the opportunity to make my nominations for this mythical establishment, this would rank right up there with Led Zeppelin's "Jennings Farm Blues" and the Who's "From Lifehouse To Leeds" in importance. And it would take a back seat to no one in terms of sound quality.

Here's the story....
A guy I work with's neighbor's friend bought an old building in Atlanta a while back and apparently at one time it was some sort of recording studio. Well in the process of cleaning out the place he went up to the attic and discovered all these old tapes. So he tells his friend about it and says one of them is by a band called Yes. Well the friend says you have to copy that one to CD and give it to my neighbor as he is a huge Yes fan. Well he gave me a copy which according to him it is a rehearsal or something when they were working on the Drama album. I have no other info, but the person that made the CD photographed the actual tape case and made a CD cover from it.  The information below was taken from this photo.  I am still trying to get a scan of the photo but as of yet have been unable to do so. It probably was not all taped on the 18th but I am using that date as that is what was on the Tape case.

Radio station master! (I think)

**Low-circulation recording**
** A TooleMan Remaster **

Lineage: radio station master reel (probably) -> audio CD's -> EAC -> TheTooleMan's tricks of the trade -> FLAC

Don't let the ragged beginning of this recording fool you. Although it is missing the first two songs of the concert, the quality improves dramatically after several minutes, and starting with the long medley it sounds really great.

This seems to be a professional recording, with open mics mounted on stands -- that's my best guess. Sounds like a lot of the monitor mix was picked up by the mics, as it was very heavy on the midrange frequencies. I took care of that in the master.

I wonder if this recording was made by the radio station that promoted the concert, WLRS. If so, maybe there's a better copy in their archives, or one that can be transferred more cleanly to the digital domain.

Enjoy!

The following paragraph, written by John Mock for Forgotten Yesterdays, explains the award ceremony track:

"Here's some trivia for you...the Tormato tour stop in Louisville on 4/13, 1979 was advertised as a 'big surprise' by the local heavyweight rock station, WLRS-102 FM as Yes was the 102nd concert promoted by WLRS... they attempted to get Pink Floyd as a surprise band to make a double bill....that fell through and their last stop they tried to pull out was free beer for the sold out Freedom Hall crowd, but the promoter would not go with that due to liability and under-age drinking concerns....so the 102nd concert for WLRS turned out to be anti-climactic, just a normal Yes show that was POWERFUL....I need another fix of On the Silent Wings Of Freedom!"

I've seen Yes so many times over the years that I have lost count! Also seen the various incarnations of Yes including the 1980's Anderson-less version. I have to say that John Davision does a fine job taking the reins of lead singer. Tough job to have. And the fact that Yes was playing 3 albums in sequence and in their entirely was just great! I love all 3 albums. 2.5 hours of glorious Yes music captured on video with dubbed audio. You can't go wrong :-)

A special thanks to ravingandroooling for his 24/48 audio of the show! And nice to be able to meet before and after the show. Good to know that there are other Yes fanatics (and tapers) out there! This is some of the best video I have ever shot. I was up in the balcony with no obstructions other than the occasional person walking by and since I knew the format of the show I could time battery changes accurately. Overall, if you are a Yes fan, you can't help but love this video. Parts of it will send chills down your spine. My favorite parts are the middle portion of And You And I, Awaken, and A Venture and Turn of the Century (last 2 becasue they were rarely played prior to this tour).

As always, this recording is to be traded freely and NEVER SOLD. It's BY FANS FOR FANS. Enjoy the show and, if you attended, relive the music! And lastly, ENJOY!!! Art work is included.

I used a Zoom H2Next with low-cut filter, limiter (concert), auto-gain (concert) which seemed to work out well. There is no swooshing sound like previous auto-gain circuits might have created. There was about a twenty minute intermission following "Perpetual Change" and the performance of "Going for the One." Enjoy!

This is one great YES concert the Beacon, NYC, April 9th, 2013. One of the best I've ever heard from them. This was recorded from the 5th row, 1st balcony, center section. It's just above the loge seating below. There are huge speakers hanging from the ceiling at the Beacon so the sound levels and mix are good from this position. Downe's keyboards are a little low in volume at points but Steve's guitar just seemed to flow from the stage!
