Nice FM recording, lots of DJ chatting, but not to mess up completely the recording, really well mixed for a live broadcast. The FM reception is a little bit poor here, so you can hear a little static in the quieter parts.

Marillion played/announced under the pseudonym The Skyline Drifters. First show with Andy Ward (from Camel) on drums. Fish seems to be in good mood, joking a lot between the songs. This is a nice dive into the good old days.

30 years exactly today, Marillion and supporter Peter Hammill played Edinburgh Playhouse in the middle of the UK tour supporting their debut album "Script For A Jester´s Tear". Now the band has 15+ studio records and probably a hundred live albums in the catalogue.

This gig saw the debut of Grendel in the 1983 tour. That track was played for a total of 5 times in 1983, then never again as a band effort. I heard bits and pieces of Grendel during soundchecks but never as full song. one track was officially released so it is omitted from this torrent. Peter Hammill set was very powerful. Reports said that he was often booed by Marillion fans during his set which is a kind of weird considering that Hammill and VDGG ave been the main influences on Fish...

Notes by the uploader
This recording comes direct from a BBC Transcription Disc > CDR transfer. It was recorded quite low, so I normalized the recording. I ran a declicker over it, as there were too many clicks to take them out by hand. The clicks were of the light variety anyway, so were easily removed by the declicker. There are a couple spots remaining where you can hear a slight bump of a removed larger click that the declicker left behind. Only really noticable in headphones.
Very infrequent, and not distracting. The disc had been recorded DAO, so I removed the gaps, and recut the recording on sector boundaries. I cross faded the end of side one of the vinyl disc with the start of disc 2 of the vinyl disc for a more natural transition from Incubus to He Knows You Know.

I applied no EQ. Other than than normalizing and running the declicker, I made no other changes to the sound of this bre-broadcast recording. As this is from the preb roadcast disc, it will naturally sound better than any version of the show that was taped from the FM broadcast. In short, this will probably be as good as it gets for this recording. And it does sound very good.

notes by the taper
I used Cool Edit Pro to remove some low level ground hum that was introduced by the taper when transfering from tape to hard drive. This was relatively easy to do, as there were parts included in the recording that were just blank tape noise. I reduced this noise using just a 12% setting, so as not to overdo it and introduce digital artifacts. Also, added a bit of EQ to
brighten up the recording a bit, and bring Fish's vocals forward a bit more. Again, just a modest amount of EQ used so as not to overdo things. Removed a few occassional pops.

During the tape change, I just faded out and faded back in, as a cross fade didn't sound right. However, there were a couple other tape stops, waiting for encores, and I did cross fade these.

Finally, there was a glitch in the source that I couldn't fix without making it sound worse, so I just left this. It's found in track 5 (3 Boats) at 2:29

CD2

02 - Herne the Hunter
03 - Garden Party

Remastering Details:
I applied just a light amount of hiss reduction, as the hiss was fairly distracting.

I suspect this was recorded from vinyl. You could hear the stylus set down on the record at 41:51 mark, before I cut the gap out, anyway.

There were Fairly frequent clicks and pops in the left channel (one or 2 a minute), some quite loud. I removed all those I heard. It semms fine now.

Fish seems to be amused at the first section of Grendel, as he can be heard chuckling during a few parts, at least to my ear.

Snow Angel seems a precursor of Forgotten Sons. The last half of song sounds very similar to parts of Forgotten Sons.

March 3, 1981 is the generally accepted date for this recording. According to the bit taken from "The Web" cited below, if they practiced for 10 weeks prior to performing their first gig on March 14, 1981, then it would stand to reason that this is not actually Fish's first practice session, which is how this recording is commonly traded.

“The Web” - Issue 1 - February 1982:
Diz Minnit (Bass) and Fish (Vocals) answered an ad in “Musicians Only” and moved down to Aylesbury on the 2nd January, 1981. The new line up rehearsed at the Leyland Farm Studios in Bucks for 10 weeks and played their first set at the “Red Lion”, Bicester on the 14th March. 65 people turned up!

Sound Quality:
very good soundboard recording, good vinyl condition

Notes:
On the 8th, 9th and 10th January 1986 Marillion played 3 concerts at The Hammersmith Odeon in London, they used some materials from days 9th and 10th for their mini LP "Brief Encounteer" and the album "The Thieving Magpie". The two vinyl bootlegs "Selling Fish Live 3 & 4" (absolutely no relations with "Selling Fish By The Pound 1 & 2") presents part of the day 8th concert. Usually both album are tagged as "audience recording" but this is not true. The source is a good soundboard (possible a broadcast event), unfortunately as master tape for these bootlegs was used a standard low noise cassette (tipically sound... low high frequencies, tape noise, hisses and more) but the result is however enjoiable.
Parts of this show can be found on other different records as the vinyl "From: Hammersmith Odeon 8-1-86" (M 11685) a true audience recording and the double CD "Hammersmith Odeon 1986" (another who claim "audience recording", it have the full concert but i don't known if his source was another tape or the original tapes used for "Selling Fish 3 & 4" or just these 2 vinyl bootlegs with an add of the missing tracks).
The two bonus segments #17 & #18 are taken from "Hammersmith Odeon 8-1-86" and here we have a new problem. Into the short cut intro for "The Web" in "Selling Fish 4" Fish's words are "this is called The Web" but in the complete intro from the other bootleg he say "this is a song called The Web", i've compared the songs and they seems different (both Misplaced Childhood suite are identical). What is the source for The Web on "Hammersmith Odeon 8-1-86" bootleg? Sorry, but I cannot share this song with this doubt.
Well, here the full set list and correct order tracks for the 8th January: 01) The Thieving Magpie 02) Emerald Lies (Intro) 03) Script for a Jester´s Tear 04) Incubus 05) Jigsaw 06) The Web 07) Misplaced Childhood 08) Fugazi 09) Punch and Judy 10) Market Square Heroes.
Last, I've re-united the 2 parts of "Heart Of Lothian" in a single track, originally the 1st part is at the end of side A and the 2nd part at the beginning of Side B.

I received this in a postal trade, and I've not seen it on here before and so this is a very nice treat for those that like Marillion. Trust me whether your a hardcore fan or even if you are only a casual fan of Marillion, I'm sure you will not only enjoy this, but you'll absolutely love it. It's a fantastic recording.
It's not perfect there's the tape flip during Childhood-White Feather.

These are the original notes that came with it:
"I received this in trade back in the mid 80's directly from the taper.
I did a transfer using less than average equipment and software a decade or so ago and this is a fresh transfer that's much improved over my previous transfer. I figured there'd be some Dimers here that would appreciate an upgraded version.

This is a concert broadcasted on superchannel in 1993. The program was called "Absolutely live" and it was broadcasted in 2 parts, but I re-authored to one complete show. Thats why the track selection is maybe diffent than the original setlist from that evening. Its a show from there "Holidays in eden" tour. Its a very good show, its only a pity that the audio is in mono (they didn't broadcast it in stereo) Sometimes the audio is a little bit dull, but most of the time its good. The picture quality is what a pro shot show should be: good. I did transfer the tape to a HD DVD recorder what almost went wrong. I almost lost the tape when a took the tape out of my videorecorder. It got stuck but a managed to get it out safe with little harm done. On two songs you can see the damage (Cover my eyes and Incommunicado) but it does not disturb the watching of the DVD.
