This is an excellent recording of the second night of Journey playing at Rainbow Theatre in Denver during their 1979 Evolution tour. I uploaded the first night, 1979-05-08, a day or two ago. This show seems to be more complete and has 18 tracks being played on this Wednesday night almost 35 years ago. I've never really seen a lot talked about giving details for either show, but amongst Journey fans who collect and trade live shows, this is another good one!

This show sounds better than the previous day's upload of the 1979-05-08 show. It has a cleaner and clearer sound (and 1979-05-08 sounds great too).

Here's some important information on my first, primary CD-R copy (this upload) and the EAC process I went through to fix some digital errors in the last six tracks. I really didn't realize I had errors on these tracks until a few weeks ago when I was doing my EAC rip. It took EAC 72 hours to rip tracks 13 through 18. And it seems to have almost completely fixed these errors even though a good ear can catch some in the last track's final seconds. I'm guessing that when I got my copy from "digital_journey" it was ripped (by unknown program) too fast. That, or my copy produced these errors over the last 12 to 13 years could be the issue? I have broken the EAC burn up into two sessions so there are two text files. First, the no problem tracks which were 1 through 12 were ripped and then the second, 72 hour rip of tracks 13 - 18 were made. Oh yea, and by the way, the error fixed version EAC log shows Peak Levels at 92% to 100% and the lowest Track Quality percentage is 90.4%. And I used Audacity's "Click Removal" too. So it's still a great rip and an excellent sounding show.

This is an excellent recording of the first of two nights in a row of Journey playing at "The Rainbow" (Rainbow Theatre) in Denver during their 1979 Evolution tour. I've been told this is a soundboard and not an FM broadcast recording, however; I do not know for sure. I'm thinking this may be a soundboard recording from the radio station tape itself possibly? The shows were broadcast live on Denver's KEZY FM, and even though this doesn't seem to be the complete show, it is great and it may be complete. This was a Tuesday night and not normally a big concert going night across America. The second night, or Wednesday night, is a more complete show (may even be complete) and I'll be uploading it too.

Over a decade ago, my friend, "digital_journey", got these two Denver concerts directly from a guy in Denver that had a treasure trove of Journey materials, shows, and master/master copies of videos and music alike that he was getting rid of. They were professionally made too. I saw things on this guy's site that I have never seen since and have been looking for since too. He had some concert footage that was professionally shot from Journey's 1981-11-07 Dallas show (a show that still has never surfaced at all) as well as a lot of the master material such as interviews with the band from a Dallas local TV news personality that were aired on KXAS TV in Dallas. This is just a small example of the vast material he had and he seemed to "be in the loop" better than anyone I've ever known when it came to uncirculated Journey material. We could've got his whole collection for $200 because he was getting rid of his collection he said. Looking back, I can kick myself in the rear for not selling whatever I needed to and buying what he had. I just didn't have the money because, once again, this was right after my eye surgeries and I was without work, money, and vision then. However, my buddy did buy a few items from him and these two shows I'll be uploading from Denver 1979 were two of the items he got.

Here is an excellent soundboard of Journey's third from last concert in Tokyo in 1979. They did three shows in Tokyo in 1979 (I've got them all). They played 1979-04-15, 04-16, and 04-18; so obviously this was the first night's show.

This show has some unique songs Journey didn't normally do live, and even if they did, we don't have other live recordings of the songs. They added both "Lady Luck" and "Can Do" to the set and put the songs in during the latter half of the show but before the ending songs.

This is a superb performance by Journey. There are a few flaws in the recording, but they definitely do not ruin the show. And this source I'm uploading is the very best one I've found. The high's are clean and clear unlike other copies of the show I've heard and the high's don't create the hiss associated with EQ'ing the tracks. It's my opinion that this is just a better source than other copies that have surfaced.

This is Journey in their prime. It was after they were known of and were on the radio, but it was also before they became superstars in 1981 with the release of their "Escape" LP. They're on fire and sound great.

You wanted the best, you got the best.... This is one of the best Journey shows available in trading circles. I did some research and as far as I can tell none of these tracks were used for official releases like 'Captured' or the 'Greatest Hits' DVD. So luckily, I didn't have to leave out any tracks (I hate incomplete shows!). The bootleg is called 'Messin' with the Kid', and it has a great sound. IMO Journey never got any better than during this time... I don't have artwork, but perhaps you can find it on the internet, since it's a pretty well-known bootleg.

This show is awesome in sound and performance. There are a few split second dropouts in the audio, but not many. I believe there are 3 or 4 of them but they do not ruin the recording. The taper quit recording as the band left the stage after "Wheel In The Sky". He didn't record the audience cheering and missed about a second or two of the encore where Neal Schon's solo begins. Whoever recorded the show did an excellent job, and as always, the Japanese crowds were polite and quiet during the music and showed their enjoyment of the music between songs.

The CD-R's I got in trade long ago were not tracked at the beginning of many of the songs. I'm just quessing here; but I imagine the recorder may have been marking new tracks live as the songs changed. I don't recall if tape recorders in 1982 had that capability but I imagine DAT recorders may have. That's why I took both CD's, removed all track markers, and created new song tracks. Nobody wants to jump to a song and it began at the end of the previous track :-)

The trader I got this show from added bonus tracks and there were two songs, "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" and "Where Were You" that were from another show. They were uncut and in this order and I have no idea what show they came from (yet). He also had added some tracks from the 1986 Raised on Radio TV Special as filler songs I guess. I left all of these out since they were not part of the Osaka show

Great Early Journey Concerts Here Came Out Nice Uncompressed From Source Material Audio Reprocessed For Stereo With Eq

This is among the earliest known professional recordings of Journey, from long before it ascended to the top of the AOR radio charts with a long string of FM hits. The group had formed eight months earlier when young guitar superstar Neal Schon decided to form his own group after departing Santana in 1972. He eventually convinced singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie to follow suit, making Journey the Bay Area's first handpicked supergroup. Also on board were bassist Ross Valory (best known for his role in the artsy psychedelic band Frumious Bandersnatch) and drummer extraordinaire Aynsley Dunbar, who had spent the previous few years working with Frank Zappa and David Bowie (during the Diamond Dogs period). Dunbar was a new addition, since the band's original drummer, Prairie Prince, had left to form a new group—The Tubes.

Although the band (whose name was picked as the result of a listener contest on KSAN-FM) would spring into its most lucrative popularity after the fourth album, Infinity, was made with new vocalist Steven Perry in 1978, this recording shows a musical group searching to find its place in the burgeoning rock marketplace.

The material here appeared on the band's debut Columbia Records album, and appears to be more of a marriage of progressive rock and jazz fusion than the pop-driven hard rock format that it would later embrace with Perry.

The Journey heard here was more about musical acrobatics and frantic solos than it is about melodies and well constructed rhythms. That skill would come later, after Perry joined, Tickner departed, and Dunbar, who had bolted to join Jefferson Starship, was replaced by Steve Smith.

The hit making version of the band would remain together until 1987. Today, Schon and Valory remain in a version of the band that has virtually no musical connection to the band recorded for this show.

Journey, very near the end of my favorite part of the band's career. I've always been partial to early Journey, before Steve Perry joined them, and the first album or 2 with him. It's not that I don't like Steve Perry or what Journey became, a hit making machine and one of the biggest bands around, I just love their early stuff. IMHO. Anyway, this show is from the Philly area from 1978, a very good show that's decent sounding. However, there were cuts between tracks that I smoothed out the best I could.

This is an excellent sounding audience recording and so is the recording from the previous night's show too. I'd planned on uploading it yesterday but got busy and wasn't able to.

As far as the EIM part in the 3/10 and 3/11 shows goes, I'm mystified as to how this is there and what source may have actually been recording the show. Was it a Journey roadie or crew employee that made the recording? I'm not sure. And example of what you hear in the EIM transmission might be something like "Still They Ride, 1, 2, 3, 4, 2, 2, 3, 4" and then the band starts on the song on the queue. The source I got this recording from, "Mariet", said it reportedly is the earpiece for Arnel and the information heard is being passed to him. I listened to the 2009-03-10 show with Arnel's EIM yesterday and at points it sounds like a metronome keeping timing near the beginning of a few songs can be heard too. If anyone has any familiarity or knowledge of how this all works, please feel free to leave a comment and let those of us not sure know.

08 - Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' (removed - official release)
09 - Don't Fight It (encore)

Sound Quality A+

Notes:
Not the complete show. Not broadcast (or at least included in my version) are the songs No More Lies, Backtalk, Edge Of The Blade, Escape, and Lights. I have removed the intro as it contains the studio version of Any Way You Want It. I have also removed 2 songs from the encore - After The Fall and Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'. These 2 songs are contained in the official release Journey - Greatest Hits Live. Although the credits on the official release say the Japan songs frmo the album were recorded in May 1983, all records I can find on the internet indicate they were touring in America in May 1983, and I am sure those 2 songs from Greatest Hits Live are taken from this Japan show.

Now that that's out of the way, this is an awesome show! Killer versions of all songs, but definite hightlights are the triple hit of Send Her My Love, Still They Ride (best version ever!!?!), and Open Arms. Separate Ways is also especially rockin' in this show. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
