this is the earliest Huey Lewis recording I've heard. etree notes that this show was on the King Biscuit radio show but not all of it was broadcasted there this may be the full show from Reseda, it comes from a fellow who recorded sbds there for awhile in the early 80's the date information is taken from etree, so it should be right, but they're sometimes wrong. a few of those have been posted recently, and still a couple more are likely to be soon. I think this might be a radio broadcast since it has some between track edits. if so, probably a local one, not the edited national one on KBFH show. not sure of track 12 title, the rest should be right the last 4 songs are "filler" from another show, and included on the source cassette, so I left them in here.

notes:
"Huey Lewis & The News hit the ball out of the park with their third album, Sports. The September 1983 release dominated the charts until November 1984, with five Top 40 singles...and in 1985, Weird Al Yankovic parodied one of the songs with "I Want A New Duck."

Speaking of Weird Al, he and Huey teamed up for a GREAT promo spot for the 30th Anniversary Release of Sports...even if you're not a fan, it's worth checking out. I don't see that it's available for embedding, but if you do a search on YouTube for "American Psycho with Huey Lewis and Weird Al" it will turn up...as you can see from the title, it's got a parody of a scene from that movie...

comments:
recorded live in Portland, it's the Huey Lewis Big Band. (about twice the size of the "sports" tour group lineup.) track 12 here is not to be confused with the 1973 Genesis song. the title is the same, but it's an entirely different song. "the power of love" and "back in time" were previously heard in the soundtrack of the movie "back to the future". just how hip is it to be square, really? Not very, according to Huey, apparently, at this time. He seemed almost embarassed about that being the current standard of hip in their native S.F. area. this tour is poppier than the "sports" music. highlights of this (imho) include Jacob's ladder, I never walk alone, the power of love and back in time. just a few nights before Christmas and all through the house, Huey Lewis was stirring up and scaring away all the mice with audio newspaper. If you celebrate Christmas, or Chanukah, or something similar this time of the year, and this is it, merry Chanukah, Happy Christmas or whatever else applies to you, and if you're stuck with someone, or just want a new drug, well... have some Huey. But be forewarned, sometimes bad is bad. not always, though.

Huey Lewis & The News during the height of their success. This audio comes from an Italian TV broadcast and is the longest version I've seen. I've pitch adjusted this to match the video. The Italian DJ talks over the beginning of a couple songs. The crowd noise is a bit intrusive at the beginning of most songs, it affects the fidelity of the songs. You can watch a 70 min version on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWBbomS0UIQ

The Italian broadcast had an extra song "Finally Found A Home", not included on the youtube version. This also included an interview and So In Love (acappella).

Notes:
This recording found it's way to me from a long time buddy/collector via a portable HD. The HD contains a good 50-75 shows from Wolf Trap from about 2010 - 2013 I have found NONE of these to be in circulation, nor have I found many to have been recorded via any other source. So I would regard these as very unique.

I can conclude that almost all of these recordings (if not all) were recorded via ALD. They are all Mono, and many of the recordings have various stages of Clipping. It's not clear if the clipping is only in the copies I received or are on the original files (which I had no access to) Without overly enhancing or destroying the recordings, I have done the best I could to master them and put them out. I would welcome any input on the history of these recordings or anything else that someone could enlighten me on their origin.

Notes:
A great hits-filled show from Huey and the News in a hot as hell parking lot. This was a concert put on for RAGBRAI which is a annual bike ride across Iowa that brings all kinds of drunken and road hogging bike riders to our state every year. Why people put on concerts in a parking lot of a nice fairly new air conditioned arena in the middle of July is a mystery to me. I recorded the show and got the hell out of there.

Here` one of my old VHS master tapes. The quality is as good as a master from 1985 could be. The tape was still in good shape after all these years.

Comments: This was my third eighties show in a week that covered four bands. After this, I am officially eighties out. These guys were the first concert I ever saw, back when I was 14 years old! This was a daytime show. The venue is right on Lake Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. (Yes, that is really the name of the lake). All the concerts here are daytime shows. This was my first trip to this place. The venue is open air, with some covered section. I was in a covered section, 20 some odd rows back. The section where I was was not raised at an incline, even though the sections in front and behind me were. This meant that I couldn't really see, because there were about 10 rows of people in front of me at the same level. The crowd was enthusiastic, and often louder than the music. It wasn't my favorite venue.

The recording is nice, with some very loud clapping and cheering here and there, and some minor chatter, especially during the three new songs (one of which they played last time I saw them four years ago, but I guess it's still new for them!).
