78 Closing Comments

In May of 1988 Atlantic Records celebrated their 40th anniversary in New York City at Madison Square Garden. A grand mix of Atlantic artist performed ranging from the past to the (then) present. The actual concert lasted over 12 hours and portions of the concert were broadcast on HBO and simulcast on FM radio. My recording was taken from WNEW FM in New York and totals 5 1/2 hours in length. The entire show was never broadcast. Some artist’s sets were edited and some omitted entirely. The broadcast started hours after the event started so some of the performances shown were live while others were recorded earlier. To some extent the performances were not broadcast in their original running order with acts from earlier in the day inserted between the later acts and of course songs omitted to make room for them.

The HBO show and this simulcast are probably the most complete versions of the show in circulation. The HBO show has been posted here before: http://www.thetradersden.org/forums/...lantic+records. But as far as I know the simulcast has not. An edited down version of this concert was shown on ABC TV later this same year and then Atlantic Records released a video of the show which contained excerpts of the performance intermixed with archive footage of other Atlantic artists.

Quite an interesting array or artists spanning 40 years of Atlantic history. There is a section in the center of the show with various members of Booker T. & The M.G.'s featuring Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn along with Dan Akyroyd as his alter ego Elwood Blues. They are listed here as The Elwood Blues Review as dubbed so by Elwood himself. And of course the night concludes with the Led Zeppelin Reunion featuring Jason Bonham on drums. Quite a night.

There are a couple of glitches in this recording such as some static present in track 9 and a few other random spots. I don't know if that is an artifact of the broadcast or just my reception. I'm leaning towards an artifact of the broadcast. Also there is a tape flip at the end of Urgent and another at the end of People Got To Be Free with a short bit missing. Other then that the recording is complete. Enjoy!

Notes:
Let me state from the outset that calling this lineup "Foreigner" is nothing short of outright fraud. When Mick Jones was diagnosed with heart issues and had to bow out of the already-booked 2011 tour, people were willing to cut them some slack. However, there is really no excuse for booking additional dates without a single original member left in the band. The fact is that not one single member performing with Foreigner today had any part in the writing or recording of even one single song in the current set list. That is just plain absurd. At very least, they could play a couple of tunes from the 2009 "Can't Slow Down" record that much of this lineup actually recorded. That might lend them at least a grain of credibility. The most frustrating part is that they don't even bother to inform ticket buyers that Jones will not be performing with the band. Frankly, this lineup has more right to perform under the name "Hurricane," or even "Dokken," than Foreigner. All that aside, are they a good band? Sure. Was the performance good? Of course. That just isn't the point.

This venue is another problem in itself. The Twin River Event Center is easily the worst venue in the entire country to see (and record) a show. It's just a huge rectangular convention room with a 30' ceiling and a small inset stage on one wall. They set up thousands of folding chairs on the floor and have the nerve to make all tickets reserved seating. The biggest problem is that the PA isn't half as loud as it should be to fill this cavernous room. The audience is primarily slot players who got complimentary tickets. As a result, most of them don't know the band, don't pay attention, and chit-chat through the whole show. Those who actually paid for a ticket constantly scream and clap over the insufficient PA. In other words, at this venue recording is pretty much hopeless. Despite that, this show wasn't a complete disaster, but it's just impossible to avoid all the yappers. Otherwise, a great recording.

Show comments:
Don't see a whole lot of Agent Provacateur tour audience recordings and i only have a few and this one is by far the best. Play It Loud! I was fortunate to see this tour a little over a month later in San Diego and actually got to meet them (except Lou who was not feeling well) at the meet and greet and all of them were very cool, i still have my autographed LP of Agent Provacateur.

This one plays like a “Greatest Hits Live” set. Foreigner put 16 hits on the American Top 40, and 13 of them are represented here. So...13 out of 14 of these were Top 40 hits. Other than that...not much to say. You know if you like ‘em or not. If you do, you’ll probably like this. I included a scan of the cue sheet.

Description:
Foreigner playing live in front of a small studio audience with DJ interviews . . . broadcast live on WKQX-Chicago. Good stuff!
Here's some additional info according to www.foreignerfiles.com: "The band was brand new, doing arena shows with The Doobie Brothers. We were offered the opening slot in Chicago on a stadium tour with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Along came Bob Pittman, a precocious (19-year old) program directorfr om WKQX, a big rock station in Chicago. He said, "Do a live radio broadcast with us and you can headline the Uptown Theater and sell out 3500 seats." CRISIS! What to do, open for 80,000 kids or headline our own show? What if no one showed up? At the last second I called Randy Hoch, our Atlantic Records Chicago promotion guy. He said, "Go with WKQX and Pittman." We did. We sold out the Uptown Theater!"
