We're Back! And We've Got a Secret...

We're delighted to be able to share some exciting Toy Society news with you!

We're sorry you haven't heard from us for a while. Things got away from us and before we knew it, time did too. We sincerely apologise, we hate letting this amazing community down.

The Toy Society has grown, so rapidly, into an inspiring world-wide community since we started with that humble first toy drop almost five years ago. We've been straining under the weight of time consuming systems set up in the early days before we understood just how many like minded people there were wanting to get in on the fun. We hated keeping people waiting but at the same time it became impossible not to.

To help things flow faster and smoother (and to lighten the work load for the admins) we will be making a number of changes over the coming months. As you can already see that we have a fresh new look. We are slowly rolling that out across everything we do, so please be patient.

We're starting off with the simplest changes that hopefully will have the biggest impact for you:

1. The biggest change is that we've changed our name!

Well, sort of. You might remember that we used to have a Facebook page. Someone with a business with a very similar name managed to get our lovely page shut down. This was despite legal advice that there were no trademark infringements and we were legitimately able to use our name. However, we don't wanna be hassled anymore! So, you'll see in our sweet new logo up there that we are now The (secret) Toy Society! Cheeky, right? Also, completely appropriate given we do our toy dropping in secret! What do you think?

We are keeping the blog address the same for now.

2. We've simplified the process for how you post your drops

It's now as easy as sending an email! The email address will be updated every couple of months (mostly to avoid drowning in spam) and we ask that you follow the instructions exactly.

Posts will be held in draft until an admin approves and publishes them. Please note, we are unable to edit your photos, so you must make sure they are appropriately sized and facing the right way! All details on how to submit your drop now live here. The email address will be sent to all members so be sure that you are signed up and your details are current.

We are going through the back log of drops and posting them at the moment, please bare with us while we catch up.

3. We have a new sign up process

It is much simpler and a little bit prettier. Plus, it shouldn't break now (it used to sometime which was very annoying!). We realise this change has very little impact on you, seeing as you're already receiving this email but we wanted to let you know as it's all part of our refresh.

4. Getting back into Facebook

As we mentioned above, our lovely Facebook community was shut down last year. Never fear, we've moved on and are starting again. You can like our page here: www.facebook.com/TheSecretToySociety

We will also be back tweeting and pinning, too. We would love to pin your patterns if you have any. Tag us on Pinterest if you have a pattern you would like us to share, or tweet us or email us and let us know.

The Flickr community will remain, for now, but we won't be posting drops to the blog from Flickr anymore.

5. We would love to hear your thoughts

Whether you've done a bunch of drops or only just joined, we would love to hear your ideas on how you think things could improve here. Soon, we will send you a brief survey via email. We will use that to help shape our next round of improvements.

We are really so very sorry things slipped away but we are so excited about the refresh and getting things back up and running so we can all enjoy seeing how the love is being shared around the world, one handmade toy at a time.

Start emailing your drops!

2010 World Wide Christmas Drop

Are you participating in the World Wide Christmas Drop this year? All the details should be in your inbox now. Please be sure to check the posting details as they are very different to usual posting, in fact we're asking you not to use Flickr to post your Christmas drops. Be sure to check your email for the details.

Also, we're delighted to say that this year because the last weekend before Christmas is a whole week before the big day, we are extending the timeframe to be the whole week! So all drops this week will be counted as a World Wide Christmas Drop.

Perhaps you would like to include a Christmas card of some sort with your drop this week?

It's gonna be a Toy Society Christmas!

The Toy Society is doing Christmas, baby! And you're invited to be part of the fun.

What: A co ordinated simultaneous world-wide toy drop the weekend before Christmas. On that weekend a map with drop locations will be uploaded to the blog so you can see where all the Toy Society elves are active. Each toy drop will also then be uploaded to the blog as well as any finder emails.

When: The last weekend before Christmas.

Who: Anyone willing to make a handmade toy and drop it on the street the weekend before Christmas.

Why: Because it's Christmas, of course.

How: To be part of 'A Toy Society Christmas' email thetoysociety@gmail.com with the subject 'Christmas'. Don't forget to include a link to your blog if you have one. The code for the button above will be made available to everyone participating. If you're part of this you'll need to think of your drop location and submit that via email by December 1.

edited to add:
Oh and
, first 10 Aussies AND 10 non-Aussies to sign up to be part of 'A Toy Society Christmas' will receive a set of tags and letters to use on your toy.

If you're not a toy maker but would like to be part of this, keep an eye on the blog in the next few weeks as there will be another drop-ready toy give away.

More sharing

A few toys that have landed on the doorstep of The Toy Society of late ready to be sent out into the world.

Jodie (she of the selvedge project fame) sent this gorgeous little pup.

Blogless Kate sent this cutie in

And what about this beautiful bunny from Cass at Snailblazer?

And this little soap eating maggot from Jessie at Pterodactyl Pants. True, a maggot! Don't worry, look it's cute.

I love this guy and look he even comes with a Haiku!

All ready to spread some love.

Sharing the Love

There's been some great toys landing in the lap of The Toy Society of late. Some have been dropped locally and others have been sent other places to be dropped. Some you've already seen, some you'll have to wait a little longer to see.

These were sent by the fabulous Crabtree Studio. I'd desperately like to find that woolly guy for myself!

This crazy little one came from Absolutely Small. Tweet Tweet! I'm holding onto this one for my next rain free trip to Surry Hills - for some reason it always rains when I go there to drop a toy.

And you've seen this one donated by Jill at Homemade by Jill. No word from the finder yet, but there's still plenty of time.

And of course these beauties from Sydney based Designer Tutti Fruiti arrived recently. You know one's already been dropped and found, two more to go.

These cheeky little guys only arrived last week from Cam at Curly Pops and are already lined up ready to be sent to a secret location to be dropped off.

And there are a few little Serious Ghosts that were thrown into the packages sent out to be dropped. These ones are Toy Society made and designed by Azz who found one of the very early Toy Society drops.

If you have a toy you'd like to send in to be dropped somewhere other than your own city send an email to get the address to post your plush to.

Donated Love

Photo courtsey of Belinda @ Tutti Fruiti

Coming to a light pole near you courtesy of the very talented Tutti Fruiti. I have the perfect place in mind for this lovely.

More Fishghost

I've been doing some work on Fishghost. I am really liking where he's at. I'm especially liking the new fluffiness of fishghost.

Now to start working on getting this into a pattern that will be available here on the blog.

Buttons, Flickr, Yay!

The new button is available for you to add to your cute blog:

Email thetoysociety@gmail.com with the subject button and I'll send you the code! If you've already emailed me recently asking for the button, don't worry about emailing again, it's on the way to you.

And The Toy Society is alive and kicking over at Flickr now. And there's a Toy Society group you can join. The group will become part of the process for doing a drop in your city so go join now!

Now I'm off to work on some new soft toy designs that have come about from a collaboration care of this drop.

PS Don't forget to enter the competition to win a bag of toys to do a drop in your city!
