This post has nothing whatsoever to do with soda jerks.  It just made for a nice rhyme.  I wanted to be up front about that.

You'd think I would've busted out the red, white, and blue for this post-Fourth of July post, but America's b-day or not, I found that color palette to be limiting.  Not that I'm not patriotic.  If anything, I hold the Fourth near and dear to my heart because that's when I first met the husband.  Seven years ago I was at a BBQ, wearing not red, white, and blue but orange, white, and blue, and telling people that the fireworks had been cancelled.  Not in a killjoy kind of way, just in a spreading-the-word-to-anyone-who-asked kind of way.  Later I found out that there had never been any fireworks planned in the first place, that they'd been made up to lure people away from competing bashes.  Needless to say, my town crier act didn't endear me to the other guests.  Which was why I was surprised to find myself in conversation with anyone, let alone a fellow straight shooter.  He was kind and quirky and funny and certainly didn't care about my little gaffe.  We were getting along so well that I found myself opening up about yet another picnic faux pas, this one several years old and involving a worm discovered while corn husking.  He laughed, and I laughed; it was the beginning of something.  Although I didn't know it then, I would never have to go on a first date again.

Wearing a new piece of clothing is kind of like a first date.  Everything's exciting and new, but you don't know exactly what you're doing.  Things are a little stiff, a little formal, and not yet ready to mesh with each other, the fashion equivalent of volleying canned queries like "What kind of music do you like?" and "Do you have any pets?" over a too-big fried appetizer sampler.  Take this A-line Lily White skirt from Kohl's, an example of transitional wear if ever I saw one.  I wore it with a yellow ruffly blouse to make it more summery, but the blouse was a little too, well, blousy.  Something fitted would've made more of a contrast against the skirt's fullness.  What's more, I teamed it with a pastel shell necklace, which played up the school's-out vibe, and gray lace tights and black patent T-straps, foisting fall upon myself far too early.  It was Miami Beach meets Central Park in October, not bad, but not good either, much like those nuked mozzarella sticks.  Next time and the time after that I'll have a better handle on how to style this skirt until outfitting it is as much of a no-brainer as throwing on my oldest jeans.

If that isn't love, then I don't know what is.

Fabulous Felt Our Pal Owl Necklace

Top: Kohl's
Jeans: Vanilla Star, Target
Shoes: Madeleine, DSW
Bag: Gifted
Belt: Wet Seal

This week's trio features two more pieces that are part of what I've come to think of as my cool collars series because the felt "wings" flanking the pendants look like little peter pan collars about to take flight.  A mixed-media marriage of hardware and felt, these sassy hybrids open the door to ever more eccentric themes.  Take the Fabulous Felt Antique Octopus Necklace.  After finishing it, it occurred to me that our tentacled title character should've been surrounded by seashells instead of flowers.  But then, I kind of liked the incongruity.  Not to mention the "Octopus's Garden" connection that, for all I know, subconsciously fueled the entire enterprise.  Now, that's what I call strange serendipity.

Laboratories and farms aren't so different.  Both infuse color into otherwise boring textbooks, both start from a speck to surge into life, and both hinge on experimentation.  On the surface, I don't enjoy science (as I'm sure I've written before).  To me it's tedious, its equations and measurements unforgiving.  Nevertheless, I remain transfixed by the unchecked imagination that fuels it and like to think that this strange hodgepodge of hair clips reflects this.

Something New and Sparkly: American Orchard

Fabulous Felt Orchard Barrette

Dress: Cloud Nine, Ocean City
Tank: Mossimo, Target
Shoes: Frederick's of Hollywood
Bag: DSW
Necklaces: So, Kohl's

"Millions of peaches/peaches for free/millions of peaches/peaches for me."  So sang the Presidents of the United States of America some fifteen years ago.  Those loopy lyrics stuck with me, my internal soundtrack playing on cue as I crafted this super stylized Fabulous Felt Orchard Barrette.  (That red and yellow splotchy mass on the right is meant to be a nectarine, by the way, followed by the somewhat more recognizable plum and peach.)  That said, I'm not going to plumb the depths of this tune's possible deeper meanings, opting instead to take it at its face value as a celebration of produce.  As for the barrette, I'm as pleased as punch to add it to my bushel of baubles.  Stand by for more farm stand favorites.

Something New and Sparkly: True Blue

Fabulous Felt Blue Raspberry Jello Mold Barrette

Dress: B&B
Tee: So, Kohl's
Shoes: Frederick's of Hollywood
Bag: Eleven Peacocks, Etsy

Or is it? Blue raspberry is one of those flavors that's a regular in candy stores and ice cream shops but a stranger to nature.  Although the whitebark raspberry for which it's named has a purplish blue cast, it pales in comparison to the wild electric blue that we've come to associate with Flavor Ice and other frozen delights.  Nevertheless, it's always surprising to spoon up some blueberry-esque JELL-O only to experience a taste that should translate to a fruit that is red.  But then, that's part of the adventure of eating something made from powdered animal bones.  Fortunately, there are no animal products or incongruous flavors in this Fabulous Felt Blue Raspberry Gelatin Mold Barrette.  Just felt.  And -- wait for it -- love :)

Getting Through Thursday With Another Shoe Montage: The Kick-off

From top left clockwise: Alloy; Guess, Marshalls; Charles Albert, Alloy; Simply Vera, Kohl's; Guess, DSW; Charles Albert, Alloy; Fredericks of Hollywood; Guess, DSW

I haven't posted a shoe montage since winter, so it was high time I did one again.  What's more, my research has shown that my shoe posts are among my most popular, so I'm going to run with them (albeit in slippers, not heels. :)  Each Thursday I'll post about shoes - either my own or someone else's (hey, even I can't buy shoes every week!)  - until I run out of steam and move on to some other retail guilty pleasure.

Anyhoo, since February I've amassed a new, more colorful crop of kicks.  Three of the pairs capitalize on the colorblocking trend, which I love.  Also, every shoe pictured has an of-the-moment platform (so essential for balancing those skyscraper heels) except for the yellow sandals. As Fredericks of Hollywood is more in the business of bras than shoes, I think we can let that slide.  The overall color scheme makes me think of fire tempered by ice, as most of the hues are hot save for a sprinkling of lime and blue.  If the two Alloy pairs look familiar, then it's because I have that style in burnt orange also (see their fiery splendor below).  A word about this shoe.  It's cut a little big in the back, so much so that there's a bit of a gap.  The severe arch and 5.5" heel propel the foot dramatically forward, though, so the toes are right where they should be.  Which means that they fit.  Even if the bf says that they make me look like a kid wearing her mother's shoes.

As I was making room in my shoe collection for these new arrivals, I decided to retire a couple of pairs.  I thought that they looked kind of stodgy and careworn, especially next to the new catwalkers.  Still, I photographed them to give them a proper sendoff (as you do in such situations).  But this fetching yellow scarf of a backdrop seemed to rejuvenate them, and I fell in love all over again.  I think I'll hang onto them a little while longer.

Something New and Sparkly: Pop Goes the Fruit Tart

Top: Victoria's Secret
Skirt: Xhilaration, Target
Bag: Tote Tote Trove
Shoes: Frederick's of Hollywood

This Fabulous Felt Fruit Tart Barrette tempts with all the colors of the cornucopia.  Aptly styled with a top from Victoria's Secret and sandals from Frederick's of Hollywood, its kiwi, bananas, strawberry, grapes, and orange wedge sizzle with summer.

That's it for now.  Stand by for more sizzle.
