Whatever the Ride, Let TV be Your Guide

Beauty queen Barbara Parker wants more from life than a hometown crown.  She wants to be on TV, to make people laugh, to be the next Lucille Ball.  So she leaves the backwater of Blackpool for London to make it happen.

So begins Nick Hornby's Funny Girl.  You can see why I thought it'd be about Barbara and her thoughts and feelings.  But it's about something much bigger, namely pop culture and fame and how it all changed in the '60s.

A true ensemble, Funny Girl follows Barbara's -- or, rather, the newly christened Sophie Straw's -- TV family though the ups and downs of showbiz and life.  Poignant, nostalgic, and sparkling with wit, it captures the excitement of being young and hungry -- and, in the end, the realization that the best part was those early days and their struggles.

Because from the start, they knew their show was special.  Hornby describes the magic through script writer Tony, reminding us why sitcoms have our hearts:

"It was the . . . promise of next week, another episode, another series (season); it couldn't help but offer hope, to its characters and to everyone who identified with them.  Tony didn't think he would ever want to write anything apart from half-hour comedies.  They contained the key to health, wealth, and happiness." (198)

Exactly.  Sitcoms make the world go 'round.

So let those reruns ring.

Lettie Ladybug Necklace

These outfits feature stuff from all the usual places.  Mostly Kohl's, a little Macy's and DSW, and some ModCloth and Dolls Kill tossed in.  But they also include two somethings of a very different and therefore special origin: Etsy's RETMOD!  I stumbled upon this rad retailer on Instagram, hooked by its dazzlingly bold vintage product posts.  In particular, I'd admired a huge red heart necklace and was psyched to see that it was still in stock.  So I made it my own, along with a matching bangle.  I have so many things that go with both, but for their inaugural outing, my old XOXO polka dot shift dress was the obvious swinging '60s selection.

That said, I've moved on from red, white, and blue to red, white, and black, the colors of, not patriots, but pirates (there's a sports joke in there somewhere, but I'll leave it -- like myself in most of these pics -- on the bench).  And I couldn't let this opportunity of a color palette pass without making some of my own red, white, and black necklaces.  Not surprisingly, all are cherry-themed except one, which has ladybugs -- the cherries of the insect world.

Just think of it as me doing my part to create the vintage jewelry of tomorrow. 🍒🐞

The Secret to a Happy St. Patrick's Day? Everyone Knows it's Minty!

The holiday of hooligans and a classic '60s song are more than enough to get me to succumb to the lucky charms of the Mickey D's drive thru.  So that's where the husband and I found ourselves tonight, making our yearly pilgrimage to get Shamrock Shakes.  Well, I got a Shamrock Shake.  The husband thinks they're too sweet, so he got a mint Oreo shake instead (because nothing cuts sweetness like  chocolate).  Yet Oreos or not, it was a fine way to celebrate not only St. Patrick's Day, but the weekend.  Meanwhile, I'm sitting out my exercises on account of my sugar (and okay, French fry) coma.

McDonald's, you are a cruel mistress.🍀

Today's outfits are all about daisies and sea life.  Because whether wedded to water or grown in the ground, both natural wonders bring the wow.  The fabrics are rooted in florals; the necklaces hang at the aquarium.  It's a real "Octopus's Garden" situation, only with fish and dolphins instead of octopi.  And landlubber flowers instead of seaweed.

Still, my favorite item isn't anchored to any of it.  Because it's this pair of kind-of-'60s-kind-of-'90s, black and yellow plaid pants!

Pants: Almost Famous, Macy's

Although not super low rise (no whale tails here), they were a super low price, just $6.96.  Unfortunately, they're also super long, swallowing my five-foot self even in four-inch heels.  Now, as you know, I'm no seamstress.  So I turned to my packing tape.  Not just for Tote Trove packages anymore, this very sticky adhesive did the trick, holding up my insta-cuffs -- at least until after the picture.

That said, I'd rather deal with daisies and the deep blue sea than the devil.  Somehow I don't think that  packing tape would stand up to a peg leg.

When I hear "velvet," many things come to mind: National Velvet, Velvet Revolver, and red velvet cupcakes.  Also, fashion from the Renaissance, the '60s, the '90s, . . . and now.  Because everything old becomes new again.  Especially stuff to wear while listening to Simon & Garfunkel and/or watching a joust.  Not that I was doing either when wearing these plush pieces.  But if Carrie Bradshaw can wear couture while eating popcorn (hashtag And Just Like That . . .), then I can wear off the rack on my porch.

Maybe next time I'll bring cupcakes.
