Venture North, part 2

We're slowly posting pictures from our adventure in Northern Minnesota near Canada. We visited beautiful Grand Portage State Park!

A short hike from the park entrance gives you a great view of the High Falls that plunge into the Pigeon River.

At 120 feet they are the highest waterfalls in Minnesota.  Did you know that Pigeon River and High Falls serve as a border between the U.S. and Canada?

"Yu meen over thar is Kanada?" asks Ben. "Thatz whar our pal Sandy lives!"

"Hi Sandy!!! Itz yur palz Ben an Jerry!" (silence) "Hm, Sandy muzt be wurkeeng on hiz gardun. We'll see if he iz around later" added Ben.

After completing the "easy" 1 mile hike to the High Falls, Jerry and Ben wanted to try the more difficult 4-5 mile hike through a hilly forrest to the Middle Falls. The trail was more rugged. Ben thought Hammie, who likes to hike, would love this trail. Can you see Jerry and Ben taking a little rest along the trail?

There they are! Even the best hikers need to take a little rest break. Jerry always hikes with a bottle of water too, because it's important to stay hydrated!

Most of the trails are fairly rugged and some are littered with big stones and tree roots, but a few have planks to walk on. The planks make hiking beary much easier.

After quite a long hike, we made it to the Middle Falls.

Jerry thought the falls were beautiful!

Ben noted that Canada was over on the left. "Sandy, ar u thar?" he yelled. Papa had to tell Ben that Sandy was now living in Vancouver, way on the western side of Canada...

"What?!?" asked Ben. "Darn, I waz hopeeng to get to see him!!" Jerry then added "Well, mabee we get to see him anuther time."

Hiking can get very tiring, even for little bears. Luckily, Jerry and Ben sometimes are able to hike in style...

With a mile left to hike, Jerry and Ben were tuckered out, so they got to ride in Papa's backpack and watch the forrest and scenery go by. Stay tuned for part 3 of our adventures!
