Al Capp's Shmoo #5, 1 of 2

The first half of the fifth issue of Al Capp's Shmoo from April 1950. This was one of a few titles based on the supporting characters from Li'l Abner and like the first page says, the art is by Al Capp's staff.

Sick #64, 3 of 3

Another of their usual magazine parodies that started on the back cover. Kudos to Sick for being multiculural about poverty and not reverting (entirely) to racial stereotypes like they could for this. Weird that a family in a slum would have a maid though.

Not sure of the artist. In the contents it's referred to as Poverty Magazine.

I said before how films that other humor magazines parodied are not remembered today. Even though MAD had the occasional misfire, it seems the film spoofs in Sick couldn't have lasted more than a year. Does anyone remember No Way To Treat a Lady?

Giggle Comics #52, 3 of 3

Like my disclaimer on the side says, there are standards we wouldn't conform to today. This comic is almost seventy years old and as such reflects times when we as white people didn't know any better, and portrayed non-whites as inferior beings. Much of the greatest media and literature of the past has such negative caricaturing, which though problematic does not take away from the rest of its artistry. To deny it ever existed would be to erase history. While it is true that some ethnic groups were persecuted more than others, and believe it or not I do some cherry picking, it doesn't always cover everything. You have every right to be offended, just keep in mind that more than anything it's a comic influenced by Pogo.
