Featured Artist: Pop Shuvit

One of Malaysia's most iconic and possess the longest staying power -Pop Shuvit. They've established themselves as one of Malaysia's best for about 10 years now, so what's next? The Kleio has the exclusive interview with this awesome band to find out more. :]

------------------------------------------

1.       Firstly, could you guys introduce yourselves?
MOOTS (VOX), JD (GUITARS/VOX), RUDY (DRUMS), AJ (BASS), UNO (TURNTABLES)

2.       How did you guys come up with the name ‘Pop Shuvit’?
Pop Shuvit is basically a skateboarding trick also known as a kick flip 360 where you flip the board under your feet and it does a 360 flip.

3.       How did you guys come as a band?
The band has been together for 10 years now but have known each other for more than 15 years since our high school dayz.  We each started out in the music industry with various bands and groups till we got together and started pop shuvit and have been a solid unit ever since.

4.       Who are your main music influences? Both local and international.
Our main influences are each other as we bounce of creatively from one another.  Internationally it would have to be Rage Against The Machine.

5.       What are your thoughts on the Malaysian music scene?
It is thriving and creatively we are really peaking right now.  The quality of music has increased tenfold in the last 10 years and I’m amazed at the talent that we have in our home soil.

6.       How do you guys find inspiration in writing your songs?
We draw inspiration from each other and what we have gone through over the years togetheras  a band and as brothers

7.       Among all the songs written, which would be your favourite? And why?
I guess a band favourite has to be Side Swipe from our sophomore album Here and Now.  It was adeparture from standard rap rock flair and lyrically it was a very personal song written about relationships.

8.       What is your most memorable performance to date?
The My chemical Romance Asian tour.  Just to have been invited by the band to perform with them was an honor and getting to play in countires we have never been to was super cool.

9.       What are you guys up to right now?
We are in the midst of finishing up our fifth studio album “CHERRY BLOSSOM LOVE AFFAIR”  this will be our most perosnal album to date.

10 Describe your first album.
Raw, energentic with a pinch of sweetness.  It was 9 years ago and we were all new to studios and songwriting.  I would say a very fun album to make.

11  How do you guys feel when you see/hear your music on air?
Even if it’s the 1,000,000th time it still puts a big smile on my face and I crank up the volume :  )

12   How do you guys deal with all the screaming girls?
We scream back at them!!!

13   What are your long term and short term goals for the band?
Well we are in the medium term of our long term plan.  Our production studio “2105 productions” is up and running.  JD runs it together with AJ and we have produced for bands like bunkface, and estranged.

14   Where do you guys see yourselves in 5 years time?
At the Grammy awards accepting the award for best international act

15Some bands find it hard to live each other, if you guys were to live with each other, who would you think would have the most worse hygiene or living habits?
Well thankfully UNO got rid of the dreadlocks if not it would be him! I think we are all pretty particular about cleanliness so we should be fine but Moots always wets the bathroom!!

16   Describe your journey and how was it so far, as the ever famous, ‘Pop Shuvit’?
Living the dream and enjoying it!  The journey ahs been one big rollercoaster ride of emotions!

17   So do you guys have trouble asking a girl out?
I think we’ve all matured to the point we ourselves know what we want in a girl so yea you can say we are confident enough to go get what we want.

18   Would you ever date a fan?
We try not to but if megan fox said she was a fan how can I say no to that!

19  How are your love lives now? Update us, like who is single and who is taken?
Rudy and AJ are married.  Rudy has baby girl  Eva “shuvit” Lestrai. Moots is also engaged.  UNO and JD are still single and available!

20   Who influences your fashion?
We kinda like to wear what makes us feel comfortable not what we think is cool but the So-Cal skate scene is pretty much the major influence.  Brands like Macbeth and nike endorse us as well.

21   What is your must have in clothing?
Moots has to have his fedora hats now that his spiky days are gone and Rudy can’t rock the drums if he doenst have his new era cap on!

22   Describe your fashion style.
Urban/Street wear.

23   What do you guys do during your free time?
Sleep!!!  We spend so much time with music that sometimes its nice to just laze in bed over a DVD marathon!

24   Any tips to the budding bands hoping to make it?
Keep rocking it and don’t give up!  It took us 10 years to get where we are at now and are still sriving for more!

25  Give a shout out to your fans; what do you want to say to them?
We don’t believe in fans we belive in friends so anyone who has come up and said hi or shook our hands are considered friends so the next time you see us come up and say hi and have a chat!

Featured Artist: Bunkface

Fresh face with a distinctive sound -ladies and gentlemen I present to you the newest breakout stars of Malaysia, the band -Bunkface. Of course, they have been around for a couple of years now, but their impact on the Malaysian music industry was phenomenal. Many would compare their sound to the likes of great bands like Green Day and All American Rejects. Their band members consist of Sam, the front man and vocalist; Youk, backing vocals and bassist and Paan as lead guitarist and backing vocals.

Energetic and a funky bunch, they were kind enough to take time from their busy schedule to share some thoughts with us here in The Kleio.

Sam, Youk and Paan - The Faces of Bunkface

1.       Firstly, could you guys introduce yourselves?
HYE!! WE’ARE BUNKFACE!! I’M SAM, I’M YOUK AND I’M PAAN.

2.       How did you guys come up with the name ‘Bunkface’?
The name is taken from the title of a Sum 41 song ‘Crazy Amanda Bunkface’ . It was an idea from our former drummer, Biak.

3.       How did you guys come as a band?
We are all friends since high school. We all love music and always went to jamming just for fun, then we realize, why not we formed a band, and try to enter the battle of the band competition? So, that was how it started.

4.       Who are your main music influences? Both local and international.
A lot! Greenday, Blink 182, M.J , Sum 41, Good Charlotte , Locally, All the local bands…and P. RAMLEE Of coz!! Inspired by his talent!

5.       So you guys have gotten pretty famous lately, how has it effected your lives?
Well, we still live like other normal people here, glad there’s no paparazi here in Malaysia, pheww~  its just people know us at most of the place we go, specially in Malaysia, they want to take pictures, autograph, want our things, haha…

6.       How do you guys find inspiration in writing your songs?
Inspiration came from lot of aspect, life, the world, the people, the way of thinking and culture . All that influences us in making our song and lyrics.

7.       Among all the songs written, which would be your favourite? And why?
Paan: I like “Escape Dance” because of the lyrics and arrangement.
Sam: I like “Dunia”. “Dunia” is a Malay song which I wrote about what’s happening in the world, people taking control, human rights not really being protected anymore, and discrimination against others. It’s a song for everyone to take a look at themselves as a human being and reflect on the issues around the world.
Youk: For me, I like “Revolusi,” because it’s about our journey in this industry, how we survived, and what we’ve been through which we can share with others through this song.

8.       What is your most memorable performance to date?
MTV World Stage 2010! As we share the same stage with KATTY PERRY, TOKIO HOTEL and WONDER GIRLS! The crowd was amazing!

9.       What are you guys up to right now?
We are focusing to spread our music in Europe and U.S market. We have shows upcoming in London this October. Preparing for that!

Phobia Phoney - Bunkface's First Album

10.   Describe your first album.
The first Album, called “Phobia Phoney” It’s about the fear (phobia) of getting to that step, to get to that level where we are now. We were really scared, so that journey taught us how to handle situations, discrimination and we revolutionized ourselves from time to time.
The discrimination bit came up when we started the band, when we tried to bring our sound to the music industry, to build up Bunkface, and people were rejecting and saying this and that, so to us it was like “Fine, we don’t care what you want to say, we’re going to try,” and here we are now.
We realized at one point that we were ready to go and ready to step to that level, therefore the album title is called Phobia Phoney – it’s about our journey.

11.   How do you guys feel when you see/hear your music on air?
First time when our song got aired is Silly Lilly, we were in a Paan’s van, the reception is very very bad because the van’s antenna was broken, but we were very very excited!

12.   Do you go all, ‘Hi Mom!’ on TV?
Yes!! We love our mums!  Mummy rocks!! Daddy is cool!

13.   How do you guys deal with all the screaming girls?
Just smile and say hye, cute one get a hugs and… haha!!

14.   So everyone has a secret thing they are into, what would be yours? Do you guys secretly listen to Spice girls, or dance in your underwear or something?
Nope!! Secrets…. Actually we are all a very shy guy type.

15.   What are your long term and short term goals for the band?
Short term, maintain the success and keep giving a good performance; long term, to bring our music to the international level!

16.   Where do you guys see yourselves in 5 years time?
Bunkface performing at MTV Music Awards @ US! Hah! Big dream though…

17.   Would you guys consider going on a bus tour around Malaysia?
Already did that during our concert in Perlis! But it was a coach bus..haha..

18.   Some bands find it hard to live each other, if you guys were to live with each other, who would you think would have the most worse hygiene or living habits?
Actually We are a very tidy guys… don’t like mess…

19.   Tell us what went through your mind when you guys were writing ‘Bunk Anthem’?
It would be cool if we have our own anthem! And people can sing along during our show.

20.   So do you guys have trouble asking a girl out?
Hmm…not really, just have to be careful so our girlfriends didn’t find out! Haha!! Joking ! Sometimes girls ask us out, so we don’t think we have any problem with that…
21.   Would you ever date a fan?
Sam : why not, they are people too...
Youk : Depends how she is..not the one who cant control her self when she see me..
Paan : My girlfriend? =)

22.   How are your love lives now? Update us, like who is single and who is taken?
Paan & Youk : we’re taken…but Sam is on a ‘hot seat’ these days!! Haha…

23.   Who influences your fashion?
Rockstars! Because we are rockers..and suites our music and image.

Featured Artist: Estranged

Estranged
Unlimited by Boundaries
Many would say that the Malaysian Music industry is not an easy one –as compared to others. You get the usual hardcore critiques, those scrutinizing eyes and condescending minds –it’s not just hard to make it big in Malaysia, it’s really, impossibly hard. And then we have Estranged -the band that defied the odds. If you are a Malaysian, you would have at least have heard of this band.
Personally, I couldn’t call myself a true blue Malaysian music lover. I’m not exactly a big fan of Malaysian music. My thoughts were ‘The Americans can do it better’ –I couldn’t begin to tell you now, how wrong I was. While looking up on information about this local band, I was more and more intrigued by this particular band.
Not only they were rather well established as the Malaysian band, they seemed to really know their music. Their songs are not only limited to those cheesy love songs and ballets to ‘the one true love’, not even heart break songs are their limit. They really give the term ‘Music knows no boundaries’ a whole new definition. They write about other issues, current issues and things that really matter. Something of which, I felt that the Western musicians should realize. Music is universal, and not only tied to romance.
So I managed to steal a bit of the band’s time for a short interview before their show at the Sony Music Showcase on the 7th of August 2010 at the Grand Maya Hotel, Kuala Lumpur. I was apprehensive and a little bit –well a whole lot- nervous before meeting them. Rock bands are notoriously known to be a bit hard and scary –as their image would tell. I was relieved to find that Estranged are not only friendly, but they did not let the fame get to their heads and were one of the most down-to-earth bunch of guys I’ve ever met.
So the current band members are: the big brother of the group –Rich Gimbang, front man and vocalist; the laid back and funny one –Din Hormatov, guitarist and backing vocalist; the quiet, understated but passionate one –Nor “Enha” Hanafi, lead guitarist; and the good looking and charming one –Azwin Andy, drummer. We talked about their music, their personal life and their view on fashion.
How does it feel to be one of the best bands in Malaysia? And how did your life change?
Rich: Well it’s definitely an honour to be considered as such. It was a lot of hard work and we are just a bunch of college kids who got a chance to just you know, play music. And thankfully we are here, and we are hoping to continue and focus, and go on. Andy?
Andy: Nothing really changed much, but it’s been fun, playing music and you know, doing what we do.
So who are your biggest music inspirations?
Din: We’ll say, it’s a mixture really. But the thing is, the basic sound for the band since last time was Guns and Roses, this guy here (Rich).
Rich: Basically it’s a mix because a lot of us have different taste in music. For me is more 80’s; for Din is more like 90’s –hardcore stuff; and Hanafi is more grunge; and Andy is more Pahang! *Everyone laughs*
Rich: Yeah, Andy is more to Foo Fighters and stuff like that, so it’s a mixture but the most important thing is that we all listen to rock songs. That’s why I think we really connect and there is chemistry there. That’s why I think it’s good for us to be together.
Did you guys go to Slash’s concert recently?
Rich: I wanted to go, because I’m a huge fan as well, but I was doing something so I couldn’t go. But I heard it was really good.
How did you guys come together as a band?
Din: Back in 2001, Rich and I were in college –he was my classmate. And we hang out a lot, and we jam a lot together, and from there, since we met Hanafi – he is our senior in ICOM, and we bumped into Andy, he came for our jamming session and that’s how the band started. It all started solid as a band back in 2005.
Hanafi is the new comer of the band. Am I right?
Rich: Yeah, we used to have a lot of members in our band, but Hanafi has been in the band for five years now.
So Hanafi, how does it feel like being the new comer of the band?
Hanafi: Well first, I was with the band since 2001. I was with them at their gigs. They invited me to be a part of their band. So far working with them, it’s good because each of them have different personalities and different taste in music. That’s what I like; the thing is I like to experiment on stuff, so I think the chemistry is there.

So you guys have worked with lots of international bands, how was it like working with them?
Rich: Yeah I think it’s really fortunate for us to be able to work with artist from America, and most recently artist from Taiwan, and from Asia and stuff like that. I think it really gives us a different perception on things –knowing things from other people’s point of view; knowing how they went about with music; and what kind of person they are. It gives you an intimate relationship with them, telling you as a Malaysian band –even though the industry is so small – we are not so different from them. Musicians are musicians, and the fact is if you love music, the only thing you have to do is play music. So yeah, that’s what I’ve learnt.
You guys have played at lots of concerts, which would be your most memorable one?
Din: We’ll say the one in Taiwan. The thing is, performing in front of a crowd that is totally foreign, and the barrier of the language, because they don’t understand English and they can’t speak Malay and we can’t speak their language; and the exposure to their culture, and the entertainment scene –that is superb. And it was the biggest stage as well.
How do you find the atmosphere there?
Andy: They are really cool. They are very open. They are very fun people. You can get them to jump and they will just jump. They would just do anything. It was in a beach, so it was a huge ass crowd.
Din: The best thing is we get to get them to sing along to ‘Itu Kamu’. That is something. *laughs*
So have you guys ever considered going on a bus tour around Malaysia?
Rich: We actually finished a tour on a bus –the Digi tour. So we managed to go to Sabah and Sarawak, and we went to Penang, Ipoh, Kuantan. We actually had more places to go, but we stopped. It was really fun for us, to be able to see every state. And the crowd was good as well.
Some bands find it hard to live with each other, how do you find each other?
Rich: Well we don’t live with each other, still. Because I have my family, all of them have their own family. But I mean, it takes years for us to, I mean we fight and we have problems internally, but I think that is important for a band to grow, for a band to reach that level of intensity. And if you don’t reach that, which means you just don’t connect, and progress. So I think it’s actually important for us to fight. *laughs*

Estrange's First Album - In Hating Memory
Ever since your success, has it affected your personal life?
Rich: For me I think, what bothered me is just seeing people, and be under pressured. With people expecting more from you, and things like that, I think that bothered me for a while. But I think it goes with the job, I think if I want to be who I am today, and that’s what you have to go through. You know the pressure from the people, the pressure from the media. But I think I just got to be strong and move forward.
Din: Well, I managed to make a lot of friends. *laughs* Other than that, the band managed to make me feel much more mature –in a way that I think, doing things in daily life. Because the thing is, we used to play around so much, and at the same time, we noticed that it involves work as well. So I think the band has matured me in the way that I think is good.
Andy: Like Din says, we meet a lot of people. It’s a lot of fun. It could be the music industry people or it could be just who like your music. In that way it’s fun, I like it.
Hanafi: For me, as a musician, you get to meet people in the industry. You learn more about how the industry works, and it gives me opportunities to contribute it–to write more songs. So far it’s been good.
How’s your love life?
Rich: Well, for me I’m married. It’s all good. I don’t know about these guys.
Andy: For me I’m married to my drums. What about you Din?
Din: I’m married to my guitar too!
Rich: Yeah boring right?
*laughs*
Would you guys ever date a fan?
Din: I don’t think that’s a good idea, because it’s just that, it’s different. They know you because of the band, and with the band, we have a different picture when we are together as a band and how we are in public. We are not really ourselves like how we are in the bedroom you see.
*everyone laughs*
Din: So it’s different, I think that it’s not a good idea. Maybe this guy, Andy thinks it’s a good idea, I don’t know. Personally I don’t think it is.
Andy: Wow, how did we get to the bedroom?
*laughs*
Din: Would you date your fan?
Andy: I mean you never know, you never know.
Rich: It’s a really subjective question I think. I mean if you are friendly to your fans, and what happens if they are so connected to you and you start hanging out. I mean there is nothing wrong to hang out with fans, so maybe there is a connection involved, and it takes time and you know, you probably like the person. Yeah.
Andy: *to Din* Wait what was your answer?
*Everyone laughs*
Rich: He is a player, that’s why he is so confused! *laughs* Going to the bedroom you know. *everyone laughs*

Do you guys go clubbing, and enjoy the night life, considering you guys are so busy?
Andy: I do.
Rich: Sometimes.
Din: Err.. I am busy. *laughs*
Hanafi: I don’t like to go clubbing, but I prefer live music shows.
How do you feel when you hear your music on the radio?
Rich: Honoured and proud.
Do you still like go, ‘Hey mom! I’m on TV!’ and stuff like that?
Din: I think it’s the other way round!
Rich: Yeah it’s the other way round, they tell us!
Andy: They go, ‘Hey son! I saw you on TV!’
Rich: Yeah, you know my dad still does that. I’m like, ‘Dad, you’ve been saying that for like a hundred times already.’
Andy: Yeah my mum too.
Would you guys consider yourselves vain in anyway?
Rich: Err no, we are not vain people. *smiles* Not really. We like to dress street wear and stuff like that. Street wear, sports wear.
Din: Sometimes when we want to be stylo’, we wear a jacket that’s all. *laughs*
Rich: Din is going towards skate fashion, but he doesn’t skate. He is a poser. *laughs*
How much do you guys spend averagely on clothes?
Andy: Well we get some free stuff, so that’s cool. But Hanafi, Hanafi is the one that spends a lot on clothes.
Rich: He is into shoes now, right?
Hanafi: Yeah I like stuff like Kurt Cobain inspired wear; like big shirts, scruffy, checkered shirts.
What do you think about Lady Gaga’s fashion?
Din: Oh I love Lady Gaga, seriously, she is like an art.
Well to wrap it up, what makes you guys click as a band and what do you hope to achieve long term?
Rich: I think it’s the passion that keeps us together as a band. We hope that in the future, and people look back and are able to remember our music; to make that impact in the industry.
Thank you so much for your time!
There you have it. Amidst of all the laughter and deep insight to their opinions and thoughts, we can really see that these people are in the industry solely for the music. And in my opinion, that has made all the difference in their music. It has definitely opened my eyes to a whole new choices and range of music.
I do recommend their music and their music videos. They are unique and definitely worth the watch! You can purchase their album just by sending your name, telephone number, email and house address to sales@estranged.info.

Featured Artist: South Jordan

A painter paints pictures on canvas, but musicians paint pictures on silence.
- Leopold Stokowski-

If we were to use that metaphor to describe our featured artist, they would simply be the Picasso of music. When I first stumbled across their music, I literally couldn't get enough of them. Their music was replayed over and over again, until my weekend ended. It's amazing how they have displayed and carefully placed their words and melody, and transformed them into a song so honest, so beautiful, a song that meant something and one that stays.

A fairly new band, South Jordan - a band on the rise. And we were lucky enough to have an exclusive interview with them, with their front man -Michael David Hall.

South Jordan

1. Firstly, could you guys introduce yourselves?

Sorry I am going to stray away from this Question a little bit because
we have unofficial members at the moment.
The 4 official members of the band are

Michael David Hall (Chicago, IL) - Vocals
Bobby Campbell (Hagerstown, IN)- Piano / Guitar
Mike Chan (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) - Guitar / Keys
David Witucki - (South Bend, IN) - Bass

2. How did you guys meet? And what made you guys decide to form a band?
South Jordan formed 2 years ago when I met Bobby and Mikey through a mutual friend in school. Bobby and I were both writing our own music, and when the three of us sat down and jammed we just clicked. There was a lot of chemistry in our sound - it felt right.

3. What inspires your music? And who writes the lyrics? They are beautiful.
Real life experiences and emotion inspire our music. The two songwriters of the band are myself and Bobby Campbell.

4. What do you hope to convey through your songs?
Emotion can be a difficult thing to put into words... But feelings control our lives and our actions everyday. Bobby and I hope people hear the honesty and the experiences we've both had within these lyrics. Its really important that our listeners can connect to a song that they know is authentic and not just thought up.

5. How did the name ‘South Jordan’ come about?
Bobby and Mikey Chan lived on South Jordan Avenue here in Bloomington Indiana for 3 years now. We figured it would be a name that would connect us to our hometown and beginning.

6. What are your goals as a band?
We are excited and anxious for the next steps that will take place within a year or two. We're dying for the chance to tour more often and we'd like to leave the states and play for our fans overseas. Getting a major record deal would allow these dreams of growth and exposure to happen.

7. What were your main obstacles while pursuing your music careers?
The main obstacle we've faced is the balance of college and music. We've been full time students with huge workloads that need to be accomplished .... but we've also been touring, recording, writing, and practicing. Its a lot to handle at once.. Once we graduate from the university we'll be able to put all of our time and focus into the band and traveling.

8. Who would you guys like to credit for your success so far?
Within the United States much of our success has come from college tours we've made. We love touring and getting exposed to new campuses. We're very grateful to Shaz at XFRESH FM to discovering our music and giving us the chance to be heard around the KL area. KL was the first city overseas to respond to South Jordan so well - we will
continue to be very loyal to our fans there.

9. Mainstream music?
I think the word mainstream has taken a lot of flak over the past few years because there have been artists who abuse the idea of commercial music. Our music is mainstream, but we are a band that produces their own authentic music. Being an independent band up to this point has taught us a lot about growing and learning on our own. We've gone through a lot and this is evident in our music.

10. If you guys could get a chance to tour with any other artist in the world, who would it be and why?
Maroon 5 is a band that we've recently watched live. They're such amazing performers, it would be mind blowing to open up for one of their shows. We have a lot of respect for the big bands that have been together on the road for so long. We have a lot to learn from those guys.

11. Are you guys Gleeks? (Fan of the Glee Series)
No... haha - we dont have enough time anymore to be watching television.

12. You guys have around 15,000 fans on Facebook. That’s a LARGE number. How do you guys feel about that?
It's amazing. I remember when we hit 500 fans on facebook and smiled. Now its a snowball that we cant necessarily control anymore - but that's a good feeling.

13. Did you guys expect your music to be this well accepted?
No, its awesome when people from all around the world stop by our facebook page and show their support. We're always trying to get better. The last thing having this much support means is that we can sit back and relax. There is a lot more work to do and a lot more to learn.

14. Would you guys ever consider on going on a world tour? (Specifically, would you come to Malaysia? :))
We're dying to come to Malaysia. Our guitarist/keyboardist Mike Chan grew up in KL and lived there until he chose to come to Indiana University for school. As soon as we get the money to fly over we'll play anywhere and everywhere while we're there. There are many loyal fans that we know from the area who we're excited to meet too.

15. What do you have to say to the fans here in Malaysia?
Having support from halfway around the world in Malaysia has really inspired us as a band. Its a big deal for small town guys like us who are members of an independent band to have listeners so far away. We're looking forward to our first of many visits.
