Iron Lung - Adapting // Crawling (2025)

Maybe younger readers only know Iron Lung through the (always excellent) releases of their record label, but with Adapting // Crawling the bass/drums duo from Seattle is releasing a new album (previous one was twelve years ago!). And once again they deliver some great powerviolence, with bleak bits of sludge and noise. If you don't know Iron Lung, the band, it's time to discover it.

Stimulant - Sub-Normal (2025)

Five years after their previous release, the guitar / drums duo Stimulant (formed by ex-Water Torture) is back with a new album called Sub-Normal. And it was worth the wait, once again they deliver some high quality and high impact powerviolence / noise. Good stuff!

Trauma Bond - Summer Ends. Some Are Long Gone (2025)

This new Trauma Bond release is less powerviolence/noisegrind and more hardcore/noise. Pace is overall slower, but quality isn't lower. Summer Ends. Some Are Long Gone have a different mood, but it's still excellent stuff, and still with the diversity and unpredictability that makes them more interesting than most extreme bands.

LWSTNDRDS - Songs of Atrocity (2024)

I had noticed and enjoyed their previous releases, so when this excellent album from Polish band LWSTNDRDS has been released by Nerve Altar (if you read me regularly you know this is the best dealer of grind related music we have since a few years) it wasn't a surprise but a confirmation. Songs of Atrocity is a fine piece of powerviolence/grind/blackened hardcore/sludge (yes, following the recent trend of mixing the different styles of hardcore /metal, and why not? Here it is definitely producing a great result) blending nicely bursts of violence and twisted grooves. Good stuff!

Convulsions / Civilian Thrower (2025)

If you dig old school grind I really recommend you this split. Convulsiosn are from Spain and their grind is between old school and powerviolence, but with vocals more guttural than is usual for PV. Civilian Thrower are from France (with the singer of Whoresnation and members from Hordur, Lovgun and Morbid Scum) and this time their old school grind is going more on the death metal side than it used to be.

Good stuff!

Groin - Paid in Flesh (2024)

Groin music is fast and straightforward, and my review of the latest album from the trio from Ariona will be the same. Paid in Flesh delivers quality powerviolence/grind just how I like it, and obviously I recommended it warmly.

Sick/Tired - Whip Hand Paranoia (2024)

Powerviolence/grind band Sick/Tired took their time to come back, but that was definitely worth the wait! Whip Hand Paranoia is a ferocious album filled with short super condensed blast of PV/grind fury. And to make things more interesting and add a bit of diversity they also bring some somewhat noise/indus guitar work, at times reminding a bit of Napalm Death experiments. Appropriately, it's released by Nerve Altar, currently the best grind label. Strong contender for best grind album of the year !

Holy Grinder - 10 Desecrations (2024)

I discovered this one, 10 Desecrations by Holy Grinder, thanks to Cephalochromoscope (one of the best blog about grindcore around).  Excellent album of bass/drum noisegrind, noise refering to the raw and sludgy bass sound but also to the use of power electronics / harsh noise elements. Could have been monotonous and boring, but it's diverse and exciting (at least if you're brave enough to stand a noisegrind assault). things like a good instrumental track with sax, reminding a bit Brainbombs helps making the album interesting and standing out. Good stuff.

Endless Swarm - Manifested Forms (2023)

Manifested Forms, released last year by To Live a Lie, is another fine piece of powerviolence/fastcore/grind from the Scottish Endless Swarm. It's All killer, no filler, and maybe their best album yet. Recommended!

GAG REFLEX - Psychosis (2019)

As far as I know Psychosis is the only release of GAG REFLEX (from Leeds, UK) which is a pity since it's an excellent piece of powerviolence / hardcore. Short, but intense as should be. Recommended!

Hørdür - Bistre Repetita (2023)

Bistre Repetita is the second album from French grind trio Hørdür, five years after the first one.

This is a solid piece of poweviolence / crust-grind and if that's the kind of stuff you like it will be a good pick.

Sea of Shit - Sea of Shit (2023)

Awesome come back from Sea of Shit. On this self-titled album, released with Nerve Altar, they mix powerviolence with sludge and noise in the best possible way. Grabbing you by the guts and not letting go. And you will ask for more.

HIRS - We're Still Here (2023)

HIRS is a powerviolence collective. They bring chaos, and you'll enjoy it! On their new album We're Still Here they are helped by an impressive list of guest, including among others : Justin Pearson, Escuela Grind, Melt Banana, The Body, Nate Newton, Full of Hell, Jeremy Bolm. Cool stuff!

Cloud Rat - Threshold (2022)

In the past Cloud Rat has been brilliant when it came to inject some diversity (like post-punk elements, melodies) in their hardcore, and I regret that Threshold (like Pollinator, but this one was released with a very experimental EP) is just Cloud Rat at their most aggressive straight forward. That been said their metallic hardcore bordering powerviolence is once again super tight, super sharp and the fierce female vocals are awesome and as usual it is easily one of the best hardcore albums of the year. I expect even better from them, but this one's obviously recommended anyway.

Trauma Bond - Winter's Light (2022)

Trauma Bond is a Londonian duo composed of Eloise Chong-Gargette  doing the vocals & lyrics and Tom Mitchell doing the music. Winter's Light is their second release (after an already excellent The Violence of Spring last year), it delivers twenty minutes of high quality noisegrind/powerviolence. Recommended!

Triac - Pure Joy - Numb Grief-stricken Animals (2022)

After many (good) splits or EPs this is a at last a first album, called Pure Joy - Numb Grief-stricken Animals  from Triac, a powerwiolence/grind trio from Baltimore. Most of the time they play especially fast, and they're damn good at it, but when they slow down for some sludge/noise rock moments it is also excellent. This first album totally confirms that they are among the best.

Gets Worse - Teen Wolf (2022)

You can always rely on Gets Worse for some good powerviolence, and their new release Teen Wolfe (9 tracks, one long and most of the others around a minute long) is no exception. You'll get your blistering fast paced powerviolence punctuated at times by slower hardcore or sludge moments. Enjoy!

Internal - Primal State (2021)

Internal is the one-man band of Trevor Vaughan (Wound Man, Brother, Rival Mob, Breathing Fire, Wolf Whistle, XFilesX, etc.). Like the other Internal  releases, Primal State is pure, concentrated powerviolence. Even the slower somewhat sludge parts sound typical powerviolence. A good way to discover powerviolence if you don't know what it is.

Fuck On The Beach / Endless Swarm - split 7'' (2020)

This split 7'' bring together two good powerviolence/grind band, the Japanese Fuck On The Beach whom I discover, with pleasure, and Endless Swarm from Scotland whom I follow since some years now (I reviewed their latest album HERE). This is old school and relentless goodness, no surprise it's been released (last year) by To Live A Lie Records.

WRØNG - Snapping the Bones to Make the Limbs Bend (2021)

I'm discovering WRØNG with this album Snapping the Bones to Make the Limbs Bend, but they released plenty of music since 2014, and I regret being late to the party. I listened to their discography all day long yesterday, and I like each and every of their releases. WRØNG is a noisegrind/powerviolence bass/drum duo (with vocals by both musicians) from Australia, even with these limited elements they manage to write a large variety of different songs thanks to their songwriting skills and inventiveness. And as could be expected from a noisegrind drum/bass duo (sometimes venturing into sludge territory) it has the heaviness and groove, the speed and the impact, the noise and the fury. Highly recommended!
