Necrodancer - Void (2017)

Void is the first album from the new band Necrodancer (with members that are or were in Daggers or Verdun). While the "funeral grunge" tag they use isn't to be taken too seriously it's true that their dark and melodic hardcore metal avoid sounding like another generic hardcore/metal band. But what is the most striking is their ability at writing memorable and catchy songs with hooks and grooves. And after seeing them live the other day (their second concert as Necrodancer) I can add they're also really good as a live band. Recommended stuff!

Nightslug - Loathe (2015)

Is it sludge? is it noise? It's both and more importantly it's awesome. Loathe is the second albul from the german trio Nightslug. They really managed to develop a thick and dirty hypnotic groove. The rhythm element is really important in their sound, more like in noise rock or in Unsane than in the usual sludge band. but the slow paced tempo, the heaviness, plus some riffing sound sludge. But there's no faster hardcore parts, they keep it slow / mid tempo all the way (bordering funeral / drone doom at times). well, it's beak, slow, heavy, drenched in feedback, with a strong focus on the bass guitar. And they really does a good job in playing this kind of music. it's been released by Lost pilgrims records, Broken limbs and Dry cough records. This album, with the Rectal hygienics one, are my two favourite sludge (or noise!) albums this year so far. recommended!

Stuntman - Incorporate the excess (2014)

coming from Sète, south of France, Stuntman carry on the hardcore sound of the nineties (the metalised hardcore which was called then "new school hardcore") in it's more chaotic version, but they also add to it an extra dose of trash/ death brutality. so we could say it sits somewhere between "new school hardcore" and the more modern "blackened hardcore". their new album called Incorporate the excess is released by Head records (read the interview I did with Abel of Head recorss HERE), Solar flare records and Lost pilgrims records). if you're into metal hardcore, this album is worthy of your attention.

Rorcal - Világvége (2013)

Whatever they do, they do it radical. When Rorcal, from Switzerland, played a mostly doom / post-HC influenced music it was especially heavy, dark and intense (especially impressive live). their new record, released by Lost pilgrims records (and others) and called Világvége (which means the end of the world) is mostly black metal, with remains of doom / drone / post hardcore. and guess what? it's also really heavy, dark and intense! but with a more straighforward agression and a lot of blast beats. I'd say the evolution of the band on this record is a success, they happen to be really solid as a black metal band and managed to do it while keeping their own style. forget Norway, Switzerland is the new cold hell!

listen to it on bandcamp
