color blocking

I know you all are familiar with this huge trend in fashion right now...color blocking!

Basically, it is assembling different blocks of solid color next to each other in an outfit.

It is all about color saturation on a neutral canvas!

This trend isn't just for fashion anymore, it works great for interiors too!

When color blocking in fashion you typically only see 2-3 colors used, however since a room is a lot more space to work with, I think it is safe to use 2-5 colors for interiors.

Here are some visual examples…

If you are not up to committing to color blocking a whole room, try this trend in a small section of your home.  Like these books on this bookcase.

So take a hint from this fashion trend and start color blocking your space!

seashells

One of my family's favorite things to do at the beach is to collect seashells, and over the years we have accumulated quite a lot!  It is such a shame to have all those pretty shells stored away in boxes! We need to display those jokers...

Don't worry, there are ways to display all those tiny treasures without making your house look like a tacky beach condo! Take a hint from the following ideas and add a little summer fun to your home!

Spray paint different types of shells a matching color and mount them on framed fabric.

For a subtle touch of summer, add a couple of pretty shells to your desk decor. (I think I have a really pretty one that would be perfect for this)

I love these empty muscle shells piled in a fireplace with candles!

Fill a big cylinder glass vase with your fav shells and display them on a bookshelf. (My parents used to display a vase filled will beautiful shells from their honeymoon, and when I was little, I remember loving to look at each one)

For a more carefree look, pile a bunch of mix matched shells on a stack of books.  Perfect for a side table or coffee table! (prob not a good idea if you have small children)

I highly recommend checking out the link below! It's a great tutorial showing you how to make shell topped bottles.

The Blessed Nest

Now for a little DIY of my own...

Of course our favorite shell to find is the sand dollar, and I came across a couple in my room the other day and decided they would look perfect hanging on my wall.

I used a frameless picture frame from Ikea, wrapped the fabric around, quickly secured it with tape (was in a hurry), then clipped on the metal hooks.  After that I hot glued the sand dollars directly to the linen. (Make sure to pull the edges tight and fold the corners neatly)

My parents have soooo many sand dollars, so I told my mom that she needed to do something similar in her master bath. It would be really pretty to have them mounted in shadow boxes and displayed on a gallery wall.

I hope everyone enjoys their 4th of July weekend!
I know I will because tomorrow I'm going to the beach!

pallet pleasure

I recently went to Loading Dock South in Helena, Al, an awesome place if you are looking for discounted rugs, flooring, lighting, hardware, doors, windows, building material, etc.  What caught my eye though was the massive piles of wood pallets!  That is what started the flood of ideas and the desire to search for inspiration.

What do I attempt first?

Layering patterns

The art of mixing patterns to create a lively, interesting space is something that is somewhat hard to explain how to do.  It really just takes practice experimenting with different looks using fabric swatches.

I highly recommend trying this design technique in your own home, but try not to use too many contrasting  patterns or it can end up looking way too busy.  The colors and patterns you select need to coordinate and compliment each other.  Decor8 has a great post that explains how to properly layer patterns.

Here are some excellent examples of how to successfully layer...

A simple start is to mix and match patterns on your sofa using fun pillows.

Don't be afraid to layer on those patterns!

My favorite patterns to mix right now are florals and stripes! What are yours?

glossy

Have you ever considered having a glossy ceiling in your home?  I know, it's a little risky. However, this technique might be a good idea if you have low ceilings.  The reflection makes the room appear taller, which gives the illusion of a larger space. ta-dah...

The ceiling below is covered with Extenzo, a glossy stretch vinyl.

Library ladders in the kitchen!

They are functional and look great! A ladder would add interest to a room and allow for extra storage.
