Cosmic Psychos & Zeke @ Marquis, Denver CO, 2024-06-09

 

I became a Zeke fan in the 90s and have seen them lots and lots of times over the years.  So I would have gone to see them anyway but when the announced a tour with Australia's Cosmic Psychos I bought a ticket right way.   I've been a fan of the Cosmic Psychos for a long time too but never saw them during their heyday.  Not sure how many times they had ever made it to Denver either.  I had just missed them when the opened for fellow country men The Chats so could not miss them again.

They also fall into my guideline of going to see bands that had to get visa's to even get into the US to tour.  It's become more difficult for bands to pull off international tours these days so I try to make seeing them a priority since you might never get another chance.

Zeke is back baby.  Donny Paycheck is back on drums and kicking ass.  The whole band was just tour tight and blasting through their 28 song set.  Sounded great I thought.  Broke my curse of fucking up my Zeke recordings finally.  I think the last times they have come to Denver, going back to before the pandemic when the came with Antiseen, I have some how had gear but managed to not make a recording.  Good show to pull it off at.

Cosmic Psychos are a unique force and such a good live band.  Not sure I'll ever get another chance but if I do I won't miss them.  What a fun show this was.  Long time good time locals Self Service opened up.  Enjoy.

Here is another almost 20 years old Zeke show.  This one was on New Years Eve at the Larimer Lounge.  Touring behind Death Alley but they play some new songs from 'Til The Livin' End.  Pretty long Zeke show for the era.  Cool to hear "10 To The Riverside Blues".  That is a rare live one.  Hell of a setlist all around.

Heard the news not too long ago that Zeke guitarist Abe “Sonny” Riggs III had passed away.  He was part of the line up from Flat Tracker up to Death Alley.  He is on the cover of Kicked In The Teeth.

I saw Zeke a ton of times.  They came to Denver all the time.  I was thinking about it and I've seen Zeke at 7 different venues in Denver over the years.  Headlining, opening for other bands, Motorhead one time.  Total road dogs back in the 90s and 00s.

I have a couple other Zeke shows posted but neither have Sonny in the line up.  This show was at the Bluebird in Denver back in July of 1999.  Still on tour for Kicked In The Teeth but they play a bunch of Dirty Sanchez songs.

Lots of classic Marky and Donny shit talking.  Super fun show.

I love Zeke and have seen them a ton of times.  Based on my records I believe I saw them 5 times in 2000 alone.  This particular show Zeke played with the New Bomb Turks at the Bluebird.  Zeke were total road dogs during the late 90's into the mid aughts.  No wonder they got burned out splintered apart.

Marky is still holding it together and they toured occasionally and put out a new album back in 2018.  I would still go see them any chance I get.  Which who knows when that will be.

This was still the Dirty Sanchez tour but they played a bunch of songs off of the upcoming 2001Death Alley album.  Lots of the classic old Zeke songs.  Lots of Marky and Donny talking shit to the crowd.

Good times.

Live at the 15th Street Tavern

A warts and all collection of recordings I made at the 15th St
over the years from 1998 - 2004.  All of these are my recordings except the 1998 Zeke show and the 2002 Orange Goblin show.  I don't have good info on who captured those.

I saw a ton of shows at the 15th Street Tavern over the years.  Way more than I made recordings of.  I managed to capture 35 individual sets from 27 different bands.  Pretty good haul.

It was kind of a dump and the floor was so sticky that it would pull your shoe off if you weren't careful.  The low stage and low ceiling made it a fantastic place to see some loud music though.

My favorite ever show had to have been seeing Queens Of The Stone Age there in 1999.  Right when they were getting going.  Amazing shows from Murder City Devils, Zeke too.

Sound quality is a bit all over the place.  All of it is listenable though.  Like I said warts and all presented in chronological order.

Zeke is back after way to long of an absence.  I saw Zeke so many times back at the end of the 90's and beginning of the aughts that I totally lost count.  One of my favorite bands ever. 

They were then and continue to be a ferocious live act.  Mark is still running the show and former member Kurt Colfelt is back on bass with some new guys.  They hit Denver after a run in Europe and a string of US dates.  Road tight and kicking ass

I'm stoked that they are going to be having a new album coming out on Relapse next year.  Been way to long since the last proper Zeke album.  Hopefully that means more touring.
