Suburban Home 16th Anniversary @ 3 Kings Tavern, Denver CO, 2011-09-09&10

poster by Jupiter Visuals

These Suburban Home anniversary parties were always a real good time.  Always a fun group of folks and a great line up of the sort of punky americana rock bands that were mining that vein at the time. Thanks to Virgil for all of the many many good times over the years.

For the 16th Anniversary shows there was of course a stacked line up.  Night one features Joey Briggs,Shane Sweeney,Michael Dean Damron,Arliss Nancy,Have Gun Will Travel,Lenny And The Piss Poor Boys,& Two Cow Garage who played a set including covering all of The Lemonhead's It's A Shame About Ray album. Night two featured Lizzie Huffman,Micah Schnabel,Lenny Lashley’s Gang of One,Alone At 3AM,The Evening Rig,Tin Horn Prayer,& Two Cow Garage.

I presented some of this night as a "best of" mix that got featured in a Westword article.

That is still live on my blog is you would rather have the condensed version.

After finding out 3 Kings Tavern was closing I started posting various fantastic shows from there and it got me to thinking about the Suburban Home shows I saw there.  For the 16th I setup a mix of the mics I had on the ceiling and the soundboard feed.  I was really happy with how it turned out and this is one that my late friend Dan Utter helped post process after the shows.

Since I was keen on this one I tried to pick out an individual set to post.  Tin Horn Prayer is a great one.  Either of the Two Cow sets.  The Lenny and the Piss Poor Boys was a front runner.  Then I decided in this freewheeling digital age why not just post all of the sets in one big collection.  A digital box set of the event.

So here it is warts and all as I say.  People get loud, people get loose, people get real.  It's no bullshit or pretense.  All of these performances were from the heart.  Lot a love in that room both nights.  To quote the really drunk guy you can hear hollering at the very beginning of the Tin Horn Prayer set "You're all my friends!! Everybody here is my friend!!  Cheers buddy!!"

I had a lovely time listening back to all of these sets and in this crazy time where we don't even know when we will be even seeing live music in a setting like this it's been fun to reminisce over these two nights.  Hope you enjoy it as well.

In this crazy time where no bands can tour it would be a great time to support independent music and artists and go buy some of their stuff.  Many of the acts that played at this show are still active and can be found with a quick google search on bandcamp and other places.  Let's all help keep art and music alive until a time we can all come out an enjoy it together.

Cheers friends!!

Shane Sweeney and Micah Schnabel @ The 404, Denver, CO 2011-07-22

This show took place at iconic dive bar in Denver the 404.  In the time since this show happened the 404 has closed it's doors.  This show will remain one of my favorite memories of the place.
Micah and Shane both came to town for the UMS to promote their then unreleased solo albums.  Hence their sets are really heavy with that matierial.  Though Micah does pull out one Two Cow Garage song for the gathered crowd.  I was really pleased with how the recording came out but have been sitting on it to give the solo records some time to make a splash.  I hope you enjoy it.

The Best of the Suburban Home 16th Anniversary shows. September 9th and 10th 2011

These shows have sort of become the official end of summer party for me every year.  Just borderline hoodie weather.  When it always feels really good to step out of the hot rock club into the cool night.

Once again a great line up of bands came out to Denver to celebrate yet another year of Virgil Dickerson's Suburban Home Records.  Happy sweet 16 Virgil!!  Already looking forward to next years shows.

Here is a little best of from the weekend.  A couple songs each from all the artists that played.
Enjoy the tunes, go buy some music and support these, totally worthy of your attention, bands.

Micah Schnabel @ 3 Kings, Denver, CO 2011-02-12

Micah Schnabel of Two Cow Garage fame brought his solo act to 3 Kings Tavern they other night.  Two Cow Garage is one of my very favorite bands and one of the reasons is what a great song writer Micah is.  Great performer too.  In the past when I have seen him he has always thrown in a cover song or two but not this time.  He gets by on the strength of his own material and melts faces.  Enjoy my recording.

Note:  There are a few instances where the soundboard feed drops out of the mix.  Mostly at the beginning of the show.  It's only mildly annoying and doesn't take away from your listening pleasure.

Micah Schnabel (Two Cow Garage) Chad Price (Drag The River) Jon Snodgrass (Drag The River) , Hi Dive, Denver, CO 2009-11-29

They had 3 bar stools and three mic stands set up on stage and Micah, Jon, and Chad all took the stage together for a little folk singer in the round style action.  They took turns singing songs solo and singing with each other.  It was a really fun night and they all seemed to be in high spirits.  Jon  especially.

Unfortunately I had a little trouble with my recording.  Not sure if it was a loose/bad cable on stage or possibly a staticy pot or fader on the board.  The result being that some songs were just overcome with static and feedback and are lost forever.  I think this represents about 80% of the set so I was able to rescue a great portion of it.  Some of the tracks have a lite static in them, mostly at the beginning of the the track, but most of them sound great.  Anyway I hope you enjoy the tunes.  Myself I cant stop singing Spiderman Wolfman.
