Well hello there!
Happy September! I can't believe how quickly this month is passing! Of course, time does seem to go quickly when you are very busy, which is what we have been for the past two weeks.
It started with the International Film Festival of Asian-Pacific countries in Vladivostok, which I am embarrassed to say we didn't attend at all, as in not one single movie, mostly because we were so busy doing other things which you will read about soon enough...
We did, however, attend a couple official functions, which were also attended by some pretty famous faces...like this one:
No, not me, Michael Madsen, movie star and, I have to say, really, really nice guy.
The Consulate is one of the sponsors of the film festival and so threw a reception for some of the important people attending the festival, which is how I had the opportunity to meet Mr. Madsen.
I also met another interesting person, Rock Brynner.
He is, of course, the son of Yul Brynner, but as he was quick to point out, also the grandson of Jules Brynner, who he says is one of the people who founded the city of Vladivostok! So that is pretty cool.
I was also lucky enough to attend a lecture about the history of Rock and Roll in the United States and the Soviet Union given by the aptly-named Rock (don't call him Mr. Brynner--he's Rock, and also a very, very nice guy. He is very warm and open, and down to earth--he's been everywhere and done everything (and known everyone! He was, among other things, bodyguard to Muhammad Ali and stage manager for Bob Dylan and The Band. Amazing).
It was a fun week!
And, even though we didn't get to go to any of the movies (kind of sad, really, but most were screened during the work day or late at night when we had other commitments) we did get to enjoy the fireworks that were part of the city-wide celebration! So that's something, I guess...
