Live Worm Removed From India Man's Eye
A doctor in India has pulled a live five-inch long worm from the eye of an elderly patient who was complaining of persistent pain in an operation reminiscent of a far-fetched alien movie plot.
When Dr V. Seetharaman examined 75-year-old patient P.K. Krishnamurthy at Mumbai's Fortis Hospital this week, the eye expert was shocked by the highly unusual sight of the writhing parasite and had to operate speedily to remove it before serious damage was caused.
"It was wriggling there under the conjunctiva," Seetharaman told AFP, referring to the thin membrane lining the eye. "It was the first time in my career of 30 years that I had seen such a case."
Krishnamurthy had been suffering for more than two weeks with redness and irritation before the doctor pin-pointed the threadlike creature under a microscope on Wednesday.
"He was also confused and very much disturbed," said Seetharaman.
The specialist removed the five-inch worm by making a small opening in the conjunctiva -- a 15-minute operation that was observed by the patient's horrified wife, Saraswati.
"It just kept moving and jumping; it was scary for a bit," she told the Mumbai Mirror.
The patient was relieved of his symptoms while the worm, which was alive for another 30 minutes after surgery, was sent to the hospital's microbiologists to be identified.
Seetharaman had previously only heard of worms of about two to three centimeters being removed. "Probably this is a record," he said.
He suggested the creature could have entered the patient from a cut in his foot or from eating raw or improperly cooked food, before entering the bloodstream and travelling to the eye.
"If the worm was not removed it could have gone into the layers of the eye and caused visual loss," he said. "It could have entered the brain and caused major neurological problems."
Dr S. Narayani, the hospital's medical director, agreed it was an extremely rare case. "We have a very active ophthalmology department and we have not come across a case like this in the last 10 years," she said.

Art Student Creates Hair Raising Necklaces from Human Hair - SPOOKY!
Art Student Creates Hair Raising Necklaces from Human Hair
By Spooky on June 30th, 2011
Kerry Howley, a creative art student, from Cambridge, England, is creating quite a buzz in the art world, with her collection of delicate necklaces made from human hair.
The idea of creating jewelry from human hair
was inspired by people’s aversion to cut hair. Hair is usually regarded
as a very important part of the human body and is worn with pride, but
once its connection to the body has been severed, it’s viewed as
slightly disgusting. Through her art, the young Middlesex student “hoped
to create a delicate balance between the viewer/wearer’s feelings of
aversion and attraction.” She wanted to see if she could make cut hair
attractive again.
The main material for Howley’s masterpieces was provided by one of
her mother’s friends, a Japanese woman with hair down to her waist. She
only cuts it once every five years, and when she had 30 cm cut off the
bottom, she gave it all to Kerry. The 23-year-old art student used
broken saw blades to cut and weave the strands of hair into abstract
shapes inspired by wallpaper patterns, and spent over 60 hours working
on each of the five hair necklaces she has created so far.

The world’s craziest (or wackiest?! weirdest?!) basketball court is in Munich
There is a basketball court in Germany that is about to blow your mind.
We're not sure, outside of
displaying one's artistic integrity, why someone would choose to make a
3D-styled basketball court featuring lumps and lamps and all sorts of
weirdness, but we do appreciate the results. Because it gives us an
excuse to wonder what it would be like to play basketball on a court

Convicted murderer wins 'Miss Jail 2011' title in beauty contest behind bars
Murderer Wins Brazil's 'Miss Jail' Contest as Prison Pageants Gain Popularity
In a country known for its beauty -- both natural and human -- it appears that even Brazil's convicted killers are easy on the eye.
A prison in Recife, a city in the state of Pernambuco, recently held its inaugural Miss Jail pageant to join a growing global list of contests for beauties behind bars.
"It's flattering that people think I am pretty," said the winner of Miss Jail 2011, 19-year-old convicted murderer Rebecca Rhaysa Suelen Guedesin.

Rebecca Rhaysa Suelen Guedesin, 19, second from right, was voted Miss Jail in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. She's been imprisoned in Recife since December for homicide.
"I am just focused on getting out of here. I never killed anyone, so I hope to return to normal life one day soon."
Twelve contestants were judged for beauty, general knowledge and their good behavior record. First prize included about $1,000 in cash to be deposited in the winner's prison bank account.
"It was a real thrill to be cheered by the inmates and the guards," Guedesin said after her win. "Sadly the dress has to go now and it's back to prison routine."
Brazil's Ministry of Social Development and Human Rights organized the contest within a jail system more known for its ugly brutality.
