This anthology of Indian fiddle music of the Americas features performances by Indian musicians from Nova Scotia and Manitoba to North Dakota and Arizona, to Mexico, Peru, and elsewhere in Latin America. Using this most popular of instruments as a way to explore the great variety and creativity of Indian musical traditions—from chicken scratch to the indigenous Apache fiddle—this recording expresses the capacity of Native cultures to adapt and synthesize non-Native influences.

 Here is an interesting anthology of songs performed by native Americans. My first reaction to these recordings was that they were old. While much of the material may be, the recordings are all of relativley recent vintage. The most wonderful aspect of this release is the way the works are placed in relation to one another, almost like a musical map. It begins in Bolivia with a piece simply titled 'Violin' from Jose Enrique Benitez. We are moved from there to Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Agentina, Ecuador, Guatamala, and into Mexico. At this point you realize what is happening stylistically as we progress northward. Familiar western styles begin to emerge, epecially when Mexico emerges.

From there we move into Arizona, and from there, clear up to Cape Bretton. Mi'Kmaq group the Lee Cremo Trio play relatively straight forward Cape Bretton style fiddle music much to my surprise. It becomes more of a tribute to native musicians themselves than another collection of traditional songs, otherwise obscure. When we arrive in Manitoba, the styles bend more toward country fiddling even including a bit of the 'Orange Blossom Special'. In the US, stops are made in Alaska, Wisconsin, and North Dakota. One of the highlights for me was Jimmie Laroque, a Chippewa from Norht Dakota and 'Road To Batoche', a song which reminded me of 'Jerusalem's Ridge', one of my all-time favorite fiddle-tunes. Another high-point is Georgia Wettlin-Larsen, Assiniboine Nakota from Wisconsin performing 'Turkey In The Straw' including vocals in both English and her native language.

Listening to this CD is like taking a musical journey among the Indian peoples that reside throughout the Western Hemisphere, from the Chapaco in Argentina to Gwich'in Athapaskans in Alaska, with stops all along the way. Some folks may be a bit surprised by the fact that fiddling itself is so commonplace among such diverse Indian cultures, and at the same time, by how remarkably similar some of this music sounds to fiddling traditions in the U.S. and Canada which derive directly from Scottish, Irish, and French sources with which they may be familiar. In fact, some of the fiddlers included here play in a style that is virtually identical to their Anglo counterparts. Leo Creomo and his trio, for example, play straight-ahead dance tunes not unlike those heard played throughout their native Cape Breton Island. Metis fiddlers Lawrence "Teddy Boy" Houle and Jimmie LaRocque both exhibit traces of Scottish as well as other European-rooted traditions, including Irish and French-Canadian. Both, for instance, play the well-known tune "Big John McNeill." Houle plays a medley of tunes that suddenly careens into bluegrass territory with versions of "Orange Blossom Special," "Old Joe Clark," and "Boil Them Cabbage Down."

While some of the tunes and styles played by the fiddlers from the U.S. and Canada often seem to have some familiar quality about them, the music on this disc played by the South and Central American musicians definitely sounds like it comes from a different time and place. Alternately mesmerizing or high-spirited, down-to-earth or downright spooky, the music captured on this CD is some of the most captivating and beautiful that I have experienced in some time. It is next to impossible to pick out favorites among the pieces as I hear something completely new each time I give this disc a listen.

This CD is a joint project of the National Museum of the American Indian and the Smithsonian Institution. The music was for the most part, recorded "in the field" by ethnomusicologists and folklorists from all parts of the Americas. As one might expect, the accompanying notes are extensive and informative, scholarly yet comprehensible, and help to provide the listener with clear contextual background about the music, the various types of violins and other instruments played, and the people who play them. The notes, which include bibliographical references, a discography and videography help to promote the sense that this CD is an important document. Any way one approaches it, Wood That Sings contains some lovely and captivating listening.  
 
Highly recommended.

Realmente este trabajo es una joya musical, grabado en 1982, conjuntamente Ñanda Mañachi y Bolivia Manta, titulado CHURAY! CHURAY!, con temas con Ñuca llajta, considerado como el segundo himno del Ecuador, ya que ha recorrido el mundo, llevando el mensaje musical de esta tierra hermosa ubicado en la mitad del Mundo.

Bolivian music styles vary greatly between regions. That's because Bolivia is such a multi-ethnic country. Bolivia has over 30 different ethnic groups and cultures and each has their own type of music. In addition, may styles have been adopted from other countries by Bolivian musicians.

In Bolivia you can hear traditional Andean music which uses many different types of pan pipes (called zampoñas) and flutes, guitars, the charango (a tiny 10-string guitar made from an armadillo shell), drums, and more. It ranges from melancholy to very high-spirited.

Andean music usually focuses on telling a story, traditionally the legends of the Aymara, Quechua, and Tiahuanacota people, and each music style is also accompanied by a particular dance style (each dance tells a story too). It is most evident in our Carnaval, which takes place in Oruro each year. During Carnaval you can hear every Bolivian music type there is and see the dance style of each as well.

In Western (Andean Bolivia) you can hear or see traditional music and dances such as the caporal, tinku, cueca, cumbia or the very lively saya (created by Bolivia's only Afrobolivian community). It's the dance style Brazilian singer Kaoma stole and made famous as the "lambada" which was played all around the world. Many Bolivian music groups have had their music plagiarized. There are several famous Bolivian music groups from the Andes that are known all over the world. They are the Kjarkas, Kalamarka, Savia Andina, and others.

In Eastern Bolivia music is completely different. Here music is usually very fast and festive. You can hear styles like the chacarera and taquirari. The names of many music styles in Bolivia's tropical Eastern half are in Guarani and traditional dances are also typical of the tropical Amazonian tribes such as the Guaraní, Ayoreos, and others.

In Southern Bolivia, and specifically in Tarija, you'll find the liveliest music in the country. The "chacarera" is originally from this region where music has been heavily influenced by the Spanish flamenco and the music of the Argentinean gauchos (cowboys).

Músico Ecuatoriano que desde niño supo lo que era la música autóctona del ecuador. Jatun Cayambe, de familia muy humilde, sin estudios y una vida llevadera en el campo comenzó a darse cuenta que le gustaba frecuentar cualquier lugar donde hubiera música. Con su arpa, poco a poco,  aprendió a tocar a su propia manera.
   
Laurent Aubert, director de los talleres de etnomusicología de Ginebra, comentaba en marzo de 1989, refiriéndose al disco Jatún Cayambe —que reunía las grabaciones que había realizado con este arpista desde 1973 y que tuve el privilegio de conocer, mientras tocaba en medio de la indiferencia general, en la plaza del mercado de Ibarra, Ecuador—:  “Más afín a lo que esperamos está la propuesta del grupo Ñanda Mañachi,  liberada de las escorias del folclorismo, su música reúne el respeto del repertorio tradicional con una interpretación viva y calurosa. En cuanto a Juan Cayambe, el viejo arpista, encarna él solo toda el alma de la música popular ecuatoriana”. 

The Origins, Influences and Development of Ecuadorian Music

Ecuador is home to a number of cultures, including the Mestizo culture and a unique blend of Afro-Ecuadorian culture. Afro-Ecuadorians are the descendants of African slaves who worked on the coastal sugar plantations in the sixteenth century. The Afro-Ecuadorians that are present in Ecuador today are famous for their marimba music as well as their many music and dance festivals. Long before the Spanish had conquered Ecuador, and even before the rise of the Inca civilization, the diverse native cultures of the region had rich musical traditions. It is clear that music has always played an important role in the ancient Andean people’s lives as archaeologists have found some very old instruments, such as drums, flutes, trumpets and other musical artifacts, in ancient tombs.

When the Spanish, with their Catholic missionaries and their African slaves, conquered Ecuador in the 16th century, many other musical styles were introduced. The mixture of the indigenous, Spanish and African music and sounds have formed very distinctive music styles that are present today.

Ecuador is well-known for marimba, a unique form of music that was introduced by the Esmeraldas. It is a direct and virtually unchanged import from the Western Africa region. Marimba is played on a musical instrument of the same name. The instrument features wooden bars tuned to produce a chromatic scale and with resonators, and these bars are played with small mallets.

Pasillo, pasacalle and yarabi are also very popular forms of music in Ecuador. El pasillo is played with an instrument that usually has six strings which are either strummed or plucked like the strings of a guitar, and the rondin, which is similar to a flute. The musical style is usually down tempo and it is descended from the waltz. Pasacalle is a form of dance music, while the sentimental yarabi is probably the most popular form in Ecuador.
The inhabitants of the Chota River Valley have also invented a form of music called the bomba, which has achieved a bit of a reputation outside the region.
