E4 Wicker Man ident

E4 Wicker Man ident
Idly channel surfing earlier tonight I stumbled across this lovely little animated ident for the E4 channel based around the finale of that cornerstone of Wyrd Britain, The Wicker Man.

Apparently it's been in use on the channel since 2018 but I'd never seen it before, but then I don't really watch much current TV.

It's a fun little homage which caught me completely by surprise and made me smile.

A History of Horror

Mark Gatiss' wide ranging and fascinating three part 2010 documentary on the history of horror cinema.

The three episodes, "Frankenstein Goes To Hollywood", "Home Counties Horror" and "The American Scream" take us from the 1920's to the 1970s taking in the likes of Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Peter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Vincent Price, George Romero, John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper and exploring key movies such as the 1931 Dracula and the 1958 one, Blood on Satan's Claw, The Wicker Man, Night of the Living Dead and The Exorcist.

There is, perhaps, little new information here for horror devotees but as an introduction and an overview to the genre it's hard to beat and Gatiss is always an engaging host.

Burnt Offerings: The Cult of the Wicker Man

It's hard to imagine there are many people reading this who are not, at the very least, familiar with the cinematic glory that is The Wicker Man.  For me it was the film that, thanks to a screening as part of the 'Moviedrome' series, brought the teenage me back to my first love of British horror after having strayed into the hyperactive, technicolour splatters of the US varieties.  It's a film I've watched more times than I care to imagine.  I spent much of the late 80s and well into the nineties evangelising it to anyone who would listen and oh the days of joy when the Directors Cut DVD arrived or when Trunk Records released the soundtrack.

It's been a few years now since I sat down for a rewatch and I think I'd like to wait a little longer yet until the craving becomes too strong to ignore. In the meantime I was hunting out some behind the scenes stuff and came across this Mark Kermode documentary from the 2013 'Final Cut' Blu-ray that features contributions from the key participants many of whom have since left us.  It's an interesting watch and well worth an hour of your time.
