"Showa: A History of Japan"

 

"Showa: A History of Japan is a four-volume manga series by acclaimed artist Shigeru Mizuki. It intertwines a comprehensive, highly critical historical account of Japan's Showa era (1926–1989) with the author's own autobiographical coming-of-age story.  The epic narrative blends two very different visual styles—photorealistic historical backdrops and cartoonish manga characters—to explore the turbulent twentieth century."  Although its not too detailed it is enough to understand the main events and weaves an entertaining story with characters that grow on you and gives you some insights that only someone who lived in that time could.  Give it a go here and see what you think.

"Playhouse 90 (1956–1961) was a landmark American television anthology series that aired 90-minute dramas on CBS. It was renowned for its lavish live broadcasts, complex storytelling, and high-profile casts, tackling gritty themes."  This show had some good stories set in WWII so give a few below a go and see what you think.

"The Flutist of Arnhem"

 

"The plot follows British spy John Hewson, who is hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland with vital intelligence, and his estranged son Harry, a paratrooper trying to rescue him amidst the chaotic 1944 Allied battle."  This was a really cool story and Gil's art is AWESOME!

 

Worth buying, that's for sure!

"Freedom Fighters"

 

 

"Spinning out of events in AMAZONS ATTACK, Uncle Sam finds himself faced with a changing world and a country torn to pieces. How will he and his Freedom Fighters fit in as part of this new world order?"  This was a pretty good weird war tale, with a few silly and annoying terms and PC driven edits to make the modern reader more comfortable and palatable for tales about them evil Nazis!  With that stupid shit aside, it was a pretty good book so give it a go here.

"Dog Tag"

 

"Dog Tag is a fictional story about a very real war. It follows the life and thoughts of Corporal Tom Fuller through the final year of World War II as his service takes him from the invasion of Normandy to the surrender of Japan. Borrowed from real world stories and little known events of the war, Dog Tag asks big questions about the war while focusing on the heroism of the ordinary people who lived and died during the conflict."  This is a pretty mediocre tale to be honest with the common eyes of the modern comic writer and their understandings and motivations.  Give it a read here if your interested.

"A mysterious passenger aboard U-977 plunges its crew into terror on a 66-day submerged journey. WWII ends, but their nightmare begins. What is it that forces Captain Schäffer not to surface? Who is the mysterious passenger the ship is carrying? Why were there no sailors on board the time of arrival?"  This is a pretty good weird war horror tale so if that is your speed then have a read here.

"The Passage"

 

"During World War II, a Basque farmer is asked by the French resistance to help a fleeing scientist and his family escape across the Pyrenees Mountains to safety in neutral Spain. On his trail are a group of Germans, led by a sadistic SS officer."  This was a different one but worth a once over.  Check out the trailer below and see what you think.
