While J.J. Abrams makes us wait and hunger for every minor detail surrounding Star Trek Into Darkness and Warner Bros plays coy regarding Joseph Gordon-Levitt's participation in their Justice League movie, there are still guys out there like Jamie Foxx who will tell you all you want to know about their movie before you've even thought to ask.
As recently reported, Jamie Foxx will provide Spider-Man with his latest nemesis, Electro, in the upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man 2, or whatever they eventually choose to call it. This was exciting news, as Electro has yet to make the transition to the big screen, and the goofy, b-movie Lizard scenes were funnest moments of the unfortunately dour first Amazing Spider-Man movie.
While doing an interview with MTV for Django Unchained, Foxx talked a bit about his take on the character. For starters, he won't be wearing a goofy lighting bolt mask. That, personally, is a big strike against this character interpretation for me. I figure, Electro ought to be as goofy as possible. On that note, we also learn that his suit will be black rather than the typical lighting green. I think it's safe to say this black suit will also lack giant plastic lightning bolts. For shame.
But then Foxx goes on to tell this new Electro's entire origin, which should sound quite familiar to anyone who has seen Pixar's The Incredibles. Apparently, this Electro will be a lowly sad sack, misunderstood genius type of guy, pushed around by the whole world.
Then one day he gets a nice word from Spider-Man which makes him feel like he's Spider-Man's partner and maybe not such a loser after all. This lifts his spirits high until one really bad day crashes them back down again (according to Foxx, part of this tragic day includes Electro's mother forgetting his birthday). After that, he "lights it up," which I suppose is Foxx-speak for "gets evil."
The in between Foxx doesn't mention is likely some falling out with Spider-Man due to Electro's misinterpretation of his role in Spidey's war against crime, which, as many have noted, is kind of what we saw happen with Syndrome in The Incredibles.
Other then the lame suit stuff, I like the sound of this, especially since it seems to play off of The Amazing Spider-Man's somewhat jerky Peter Parker. I'm not sure I can buy a situation where Jamie Foxx looks up to a little twerp like Andrew Garfield with admiration and hero worship, but he's a gifted actor. Maybe he'll really sell Electro's pathetic nature.
If we're really lucky, Foxx will come back next week with
more massive plot points casually spoiled in great detail like this. It might
even be more fun than actually watching the film itself. I'd especially like
for Foxx to tell us all what's going to happen in the third Hobbit
movie.
