Fairy frolics, RAKs and cuteness…

Thank you so much for your kind words of understanding and support in my last post. You girls are the best! :-)

Are you enjoying the weekend? We had beautiful weather in Melbourne yesterday so my family and I sat in the back garden to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. I finished stitching my daughter’s fairy house and she thought Christmas had come early! :-)

Rosies fairy house

This is the third fairy house I’ve made – the other two were for my son and another friend’s daughter. I used this gorgeous pattern by Julie McCulloch of Magic Threads. To this house I added a love heart to the top tendrils, and decorated the outside walls with some ribbon embroidery and buttons.

Fairy house close up button

Talking of fairies… here she is! My own real life little bundle of fairy mischief!

Rosie with Debs bag

Looking a wee bit dishevelled – as some fairies do! *wink* :-)

Do you see the beautiful hand-made bag she is cherishing? It was a delightful surprise gift this week from the gorgeous Deb in New Zealand! Deb and I have been blogging buddies since I started out on my blogging journey and we have become good friends over the past year. In an email I disclosed to Deb that my DD has had some anxiety issues of late, which has caused her not to want to go out anywhere because she is afraid of noise. So Deb made this sweet bag for Rosie, to encourage her to want go out shopping with mummy. How gorgeous and thoughtful is that?

Thank you Deb – you are such a sweetheart – and I cherish our friendship! xx

Deb is a Material Chick! By that I mean she is one of the founders of an on-line pattern store named Material Chicks! They are having a sale at the moment and I was quick to snap up this gorgeous BOM by Libby Richardson.

Girls day out patterns

I have already started collecting the fabrics and over the Christmas holidays I plan to put the materials with each block – so that I create a job bag from which to work from each month. I love being organised! And one of my favourite pastimes is putting piles of fabric together! Is there a word for this kind of behaviour?!!!

On my fabric hunting-gathering expeditions I also picked up these little beauties:

Scissors - fairy

They’re called ‘Embroidery Angels’! Aren’t they sweet? I shall keep one pair and the other is destined for a gift.

I’ll leave you for today with one more photo of cuteness… my pup, outside in the garden, covered in freshly cut grass and begging her mum for a play!

How could I resist?!!!

Until next time – Hugs! Vikki :-) x

A day of inspiration and some progress!

I have enjoyed an industrious couple of days! Yesterday I spent the entire day working on my cot quilt - I bit the bullet and did my first FMQ! (Well, second if you count the samples I did on my course with Kellie Wulfsohn!)

It was with great trepidation I began, but those jittery nerves were soon replaced with excitement, and once I let those confident endorphins do their business I noticed a drastic improvement in the quality of my work. It’s far from perfect, but as a perfectionist I am learning not to be so hard on myself. It takes time, commitment and patience to become really good at something. Fancy another sneak peek?

Quilty progress 1

I sewed the binding on last night and will hand-stitch it in place this evening so that the quilt is finished and ready to wash, tomorrow!

Mr SUDs starts a new job on Monday and has had a couple of days off work this week – so I took the opportunity today to meet up with a new friend while being kid-free! I set off in to the hilly suburbs where I met the lovely Leanne from Petals & Patches.

Leanne and I met at a quilt show a few months ago and we hit it off instantly. She is also a fabulous designer and I felt very privelledged to have a preview of her current project (yet to hit the stores) and, it’s divine! There’s nothing quite like a bit of ‘show and tell’ to get a creative girl bursting full of crafty excitement, is there?!!

What I can share with you is one of Leanne’s most recent projects – these cute little Matroyshka doll brooches – aren’t they sweet? Leanne makes up kits presented in gorgeous hand-made boxes – ideal if you need a pressie for a crafty friend or for someone starting out in the world of embroidery. You can find them here.

Too cute! :-)

Petals and Patches maroushka

After a couple of coffees, Leanne and I headed over to Mrs Martins’ Quilt shop in Monbulk, Vic. The shop is a quaint little cottage and it’s like Aladdin's Cave inside! So many gorgeous samples on display surrounded by interesting furniture pieces and vintage nick-nacks.

A true visual delight! Want to come on a little tour with me?

Mrs Martins 1

Stitcheries, buttons, pillows and trims… (“these are a few of my favourite things”!!!) ha! Sorry, couldn’t resist!

Mrs Martins 2

Check out this shadow-frame, containing a miniature quilt shop! How cute! I’m sure there is a correct name for these picture boxes. Mrs Martin runs classes on how to make them!! (please excuse the reflections in my photo!)

Mrs Martins 3

I bet many an hour has been enjoyed around that table – stitching, chatting and drinking tea… :-)

Mrs Martins 4

Ooh look what I just spotted! Leanne’s “On Freedom’s Wings” design made up in country blues – you can see a block or two! And check out that gorgeous vintage sewing machine – I wonder if Mrs Claus has an old one lying around that she could give to Santa for me?!!

Mrs Martins 5

More lovely samples on display!

Mrs Martins 6

And this advent wall-hanging humbly lay over a quilting frame. I loved it to bits and ordered a pattern (so popular, it had sold out in the shop!). I can’t remember the name of the designer at this very moment, but I’ll ask Mrs Martin so I can share it with you! Right – I’m going to get back to my binding! I hope you have a lovely weekend – what are you up to?

Until next time – Hugs! Vikki xx

A great day at the Craft and Quilt Fair!

My Saturday adventure got off to a slow start as I’d decided to take the train in to the City, but the line had been closed down so a bus took me to the next Station… overall - I love taking public transport! I don’t think I’d like to do it on a daily basis – but it’s exciting when it’s a journey to somewhere special!

My first date at the show? Catching up with my sweet gumnut sister, Vicki (from Tozz’s Corner). Vicki arrived sooner than me so had some scrummy show n’ tell to share as we sipped our coffee and had a natter… and a few hugs!

Vik and Vic

Vicki met up with her lovely friend to attend a workshop, and I headed off into the crowds to start shopping! And chatting! Have I ever mentioned that I like to chat?

Barb at Theodora Cleave

Meet Barb, the creative goddess behind Theodora Cleave. She must be a goddess because I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when I cast my eyes on the exquisite buttons that she designs and hand-paints! It took me ages to make up my mind which to purchase, if I was a rich lady I would have bought them ALL! I am very happy with my choices – want to see?

Theodora Cleave buttons

Aren’t they gorgeous??? Barb was joined by the lovely Brownyn, who says she reads my blog but does not have one of her own (yet?????). HI BRONWYN!!!! :-)

I also met up with the gorgeous Brenda Ryan – geesh I love her work and was so rapt to be able to hold one of her infamous fabric boxes in my own hands and admire her embroidery. I was too busy chatting to take any photos! I also chatted to Katie from Cottage Garden Threads – who has started blogging… if you’d like to say hello, pop on over HERE! You can also read about Brenda through the same blog :-)

I look a bit like as stunned rabbit in the next photo – I was awe-struck when I met Lynette Anderson from Lynette Anderson Designs. Silly really as she is so friendly and down to earth!

Lynette and me

I could not decide what pattern to buy… I really must start doing the Lotto – wouldn’t it be nice not to have to worry about budgets?! :-) I loved viewing Lynette’s work. Seeing hand-made creations close-up is so wonderful isn’t it? This is what I bought!

Lynette Anderson pattern

I got chatting to a lovely lady on the Homespun stand (did you know that I love to chat?!) Again, I was too busy talking to get the camera out… but I’d love for you to meet my new friend – Leanne Knell from Petals & Patches. (Does talking to someone for 10 minutes count as friendship?!!! Are you worried I’m a stalker, Leanne?!! LOL) Leanne designs quilts, dolls and other gorgeous patchwork items and I’m in love with her new BOM; “On Freedom’s Wings” – you can see it HERE!

There was also a quilt show at the event – I took a few photos to share with you.

Quilt 1

This quilt is titled “Remembering Thylacines” by Cindy Watkins. The colours were striking and the stars in the sky were diamante's and twinkled beautifully. (Thylacines are Tasmaninan tigers).

Quilt 2

Would it be too corny is I said that I fell in love with the above quilt?! It was my favourite in its beautiful simplicity. It was created by Anne Davis and is titled “First Kiss”.

Quilt 3

The detail in this quilt was incredible, and it’s difficult to tell from this photograph, but the teddy in the boys’ arms was two-dimensional. The photographs around the edges of the quilt were printed on to fabric and stitched on. It is entitled “Hand me downs” and created by Jocelyne Leath. I loved Jocelyne’s Mission Statement and would like to quote her: We live, we learn, we remember as it always was in the past. The frame may hold some memories but the mirror always reflects the truth”.

There was also an exhibition of wearable art – would you like me to share some pictures with you during the week? I didn’t want this post to get too long!

I’ll finish off for now with a few pics of my purchases!

Katkins brooch

How appropriate is this ‘gumnut girl brooch’ for a Gumtree designer? (Okay girls – now you know what you’ll be getting for Xmas!!!) The brooch is designed by one of my all-time-favourite Aussie designers, Karlene Atkins from Katkins Designs.

lazy susan

I want to get into some patchwork and piecing… I bought some hexy templates and this small-sized lazy susan cutting mat, rulers and cutter set. A show special! I bought it from Amitie. (Girls – if you live in Melbourne – Amitie is having a sale on Friday 6 August – instore only.)

Craft show goodies

I also purchased the above background fabric from Amitie. It’s called November Books Geschichte in Waldern. The cowboy-boot fabric is for an upcoming project… and the buttons are a staple in my stash – country style hearts from ‘Dress it Up’!

I headed home from the show after five hours…. across the river…

Melbourne city 2 july10

Well – over a bridge actually!

Melbourne city july 10

I passed a lady who was picking up fallen leaves from the concrete pavement… I told her that I was glad I am not alone in doing such things! She was going to use them for fabric printing purposes… guess where she had just come from?!!!

The journey home was fun – the train was full of footie fans leaving the City – one gentleman almost fell asleep on my shoulder and apologised once he’d realised. I told him that it was okay but his snoring was pretty loud – then laughed at the look on his face before admitting… “only kidding!” :-)

Home again… via a Fast Food shop… with cuddles galore from DD who said she’d missed me…

Mummy and Rosie july10

Cheeky little imp isn’t she? I don’t know where she gets it from!

See you tomorrow! I’ve got a pincushion to show you!!!!

Hugs! Vikki xx

New fabrics and patterns!

A new project means new fabrics…

Cot quilt fabrics 1

A colour combination I’ve not used before and I love it!

cot quilt fabrics 2

Do you like the feature fabric? I’m not sure what it’s called as this piece doesn’t have the selvedge, but I bought it a craft fair in Melbourne from the Ballarat Patchwork stall.

From my local Spotlight yesterday, I also purchased these…

Misc fabrics

I’m thinking of adding a dash of red in with this mix – what do you think?

Last but not least, I wanted to share this lovely “cake” called Pure, by Sweetwater for moda

Pure fabrics

I’ve had this delectable bundle for a few weeks and don’t have any plans for it as yet – but I just couldn’t resist it. It’s the first time I’ve purchased a layer cake (or whatever kind of cake it is!) I loved the positive affirmations on the top fabric.

Okay – now for some sweet patterns!

Clares craftroom patterns

Look at these little beauts! The sewing machine apron and little party frock patterns from the gorgeous Clare at Clare’s Craftroom! A “just because” gift - Thank you Clare, you’re such a sweetie! Not to mention talented… and funny… and…and… he he :-) xx

As the Monty Python boys would say, “And now for something completely different!”

A belated birthday gift arrived for me this week all the way from my darling SIL in England…

Stress relief

A CD of music to enhance stress relief! And it worked – I got stress relief in the form of a little giggle! My DD Rosie discovered the CD cover and in panic, she exclaimed, “Mummy! I hope nobody tries to eat her!!!”

Confused… I asked “Why?” to which she replied, “Because she looks like a gingerbread man!!!” {note the pebbles down the lady’s back?!!!}

Ahh… from the minds and mouths of babes!!!

I’ll be back tomorrow for Treasure Tuesday! See you then!

Hugs! Vikki xx

Time to spill the beans…

… on my UFOs!

Considering how long some of these projects have been unfinished I think they’d be better named:

U F Uh-Ohs!

Oh my goodness, check out when I finished stitching this one! 2008! Eek! And I still haven’t made it into a cushion!

DSCF1210

This beautiful sampler was designed by Lynette Anderson O’Rourke. I’ve got the borders… just need to “do it”!

DSCF1211

Oh dear… this Santa doll goes back even further! I reckon I started this doll five years ago!

Double EEK!

north star santa pattern

I’ve done a bit of cutting, a bit of piecing and a bit of stuffing.

Here’s the head, legs and boots!

north st sant

I told a dear friend recently that I’d never pieced a block before… but I have! I’d just forgotten about the little Christmas trees that appear in this Santa’s jacket! Isn’t it a lovely pattern? Click on the pictures to enlarge it if you’d like to see clearer. The pattern is called North Star Santa, designed by Cotton Way. And he’s quite a big fellow, standing at 34ins tall.

Seasons greetings

Another Lynette Anderson O’Rourke design (I love her work!) Okay so here is one I finished earlier… I made this one for Lizzie and thought while I was making one, I may as well make two! But this one still sits in my drawer! Tut, tut Vik!

NEXT…

Sparkles n spirit

Okay, this one isn’t technically a UFO, because I haven’t even started it yet! it’s a USP (un-started project!) But I’ve had the bag of fabrics for (ahem) 9 years!!!! One of the things I love the most about creating from patterns is gathering together all the fabrics, trims and embellishments. When I’ve got the kit all together I refer to them as “job bags”, and I have many of them stored for future USPs!

Here’s the contents of the job bag for “Petulia” by Sparkles n Spirit.

NEXT…

Another UFO… and another doll!

DSCF1208

Probably my all-time-favourite doll design by my all-time-favourite designer. “Radical Rachel” by Patti Medaris Culea.

Radical Rachel 2

LOL… Poor ole’ Raddy Rache in an un-compromising position! But I couldn’t get all her bits and pieces into the shot without turning her into a gymnast! I stopped with the pattern because I didn’t understand it… but I really must study it again. I just love this doll so much and I can’t wait to get to the stage of drawing her face!

Alrightee… you get the picture… I have quite a few UFOs! But I think the next two are probably the ones I’m most “named and shamed” about – because I published pics of them on my blog almost a year ago now – and their progress is a big fat juicy NIL!

Teddy painting 2 revised

I need to turn this teddy, which is painted on fabric, into a wall hanging. This sweet design is by Luanne Wykes and I found it in Australian Bear Creations Annual Vol.11 no.1.

Last but not least, this gorgeous “Madame la Chat” doll designed by Stephanie Novatski.

Madame la chat painted face

green and pink fabrics le chat 3

Madame la Chat body

She needs a bit of construction work! Why have I procrastinated? She has an elaborate costume and I got sidetracked. Excuses! Excuses!

So now, I am named, shamed and in need of some help… I don’t know where to begin!

So what do you reckon?

What project do you think I should finish first?

Whatever you choose by majority vote, I promise to finish that project before the end of July and have it posted on my blog!

Would you like to join me? Too many projects and don’t know where to start? Why don’t you “spill the beans” too? Let me know if you do! :-)

Until next time – happy stitching! Vikki x
