With accent color (I used purple), attach yarn and SC around the entire bottom edge of the hat (including earflaps). Fasten off and weave in ends. Cut 6 long strands of the same color yarn, pull yarn halfway through last loop of the earflaps (you now have 12 strands). Knot, braid and knot again at the end of your braid. Trim ends of braided tails so yarn is even. Do this for both earflaps.

Unicorn Horn:
Magic Ring, chain 1 and make 4 SC inside ring, do not join, continue to SC in rounds. Use a stitch marker if needed.
Round 2: SC in each stitch around (4 SC)
Round 3: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next, repeat around (6 SC)
Round 4: SC in each stitch around (6 SC)
Round 5: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 2, repeat around (8 SC)
Round 6: SC in each stitch around (8 SC)
Round 7: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 3, repeat around (10 SC)
Round 8: SC in each stitch around (10 SC)
Round 9: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 4, repeat around (12 SC)
Round 10: SC in each stitch around (12 SC)
Round 11: 2 SC in first stitch, SC in next 5, repeat around (14 SC)
Round 12: SC in each stitch around (14 SC)
Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat. Stuff with poly-fil and with your tapestry needle, sew horn onto hat just in front of your first round.
Want your horn longer? Continue the pattern! hopefully you can see how each round is increasing. So the next round would be “2 SC in first, SC in next 6.”
Unicorn Ears (Make 2):
Row 3-5: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (6 SC)
Row 6: SC Decrease, SC in next two, SC decrease, ch 1, turn
Row 7: SC in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (4 SC)
Row 8: Make 2 SC decreases, continue to SC around entire ear. Join to the second SC (this will cause the ear to cup). Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat. Sew onto hat about one row away from the horn.
Unicorn Mane:
Cut 3 strands of yarn about 12 inches long. Hook yarn with your crochet hook in the middle of the 12 inch strands. Pull through the backside of a double crochet stitch. Now grab the ends of the yarn (you should have 6 strands because your yarn is now halved) and pull through the loop. Pull tight. Trim yarn after your entire mane is finished.
You will want to start with the red yarn, “knotting it” around all the double crochet stitches that surround the base of the horn. Then “knot” the orange yarn around each double crochet along the next row of double crochets (about 12 double crochets across). Continue with all the colors. Each color getting their own row. You will want to have empty rows at the bottom since the yarn will hang down and cover that space. If you are making larger hats, consider skipping a row in between colors or creating two rows of each color. Be careful though, because the yarn can add a lot of weight to the back of the hat. 0-3 month size is pictured.

If I'm making two child/tween sizes would I need two skeins of white or just one?
saras says
I just made a person hat and used about 1/2 a skein. So I think one might be enough, but it's gonna be really close! Might just want to buy two!
saras says
*preschool…. Not person!

Sara Sowers says
Just to clarify on the ear….after I stitch around it, when I get back to the top, which is row 8..I skip the first of the dec stitches and connect to the 2nd stitch. And then which way does the ear go? Is that part the top or the bottom?!
Emily o says
I just made it. I figured it was the bottom of the ear. It came out just fine!
Sara Elaine says
How much of each yarn do you need?
Would you say this is a fairly easy pattern? I saw it and REALLY want to make it (I know a few people it would be PERFECT for), but I've never crocheted a day in my life. 🙂
Jubilant Jessi says

Made this hat in just under 6 hours. the hard part was the mane! Did it child sized by tweaked it as the child has a smaller than normal head. The link below shows my version complete with bow. It also has the link for this pattern. Thanks for this pattern. IT was so much fun!

Megibson says
Absolutely love this pattern. It worked up quickly and easily. Can't wait for my baby to keep it on her head longer than 2 seconds!
Megibson says
For those about to make this hat – it works up large. The 9-12m version swamped my big headed 10mo, and the toddler version fitted an adult friend of mine! I changed to a 4.5mm hook and it worked up just fine.
jen says
I am trying a preschool size and it’s huge on my adult head. I thought I was doing something wrong.jen
Becky t says
Same problem! Making for a 5 year old and did child size, it fits me!! Ugh…back to figure out what size to do!
johanna cintora says
Hello I was wobdering what kind of yarn do you use I know is vanna's choice by lion brand but they have differet material thanks and wonderful job
jen says
Great pattern. The second round on the horn should increase two times. Maybe: 2sc in next 2 st, sc in next 2? As is, the increase is only to 5 sc total. 🙂

Hi there. I have a question about the earflaps. After the rows in which you single crochet across, like Row 3, do you chain 1 and turn to start work on the next row? I'm pretty new at crochet and am not sure what I'm doing if it's not specifically stated in the pattern. Thanks!
murks81 says
sc for earflaps? dont think so …looks like the earflaps from puppy hat … i hope it will look better with dc
Judy says
is the H hook 5mm? I tried this pattern a couple of time and they end up huge, must be im using the wrong kind of wool or the wrong hook. Shame because it does look cool
Noah says
Mine was huge too. I would hate to unravel it and start again.
Dawn Lewis says
easiest horn Patton I have found thank you
Noah says
I tried this pattern in the child to adult size, and it’s HUGE. Did anyone else have an issue? I usually have the problem of my crochet creations being too small, haha. It’s adorable anyway, just not sure how I managed to make it so large.
Sunny Jess says
Hi Noah I had the same experience. I just re-did it and it is much smaller. I changed it by pulling pretty tight (not crazy tight that you can’t find the stitch) but tight-er and it seems more to the right size. My last hurdle is the horn. I am a total novice and cannot figure out how to SC into the round after doing the 4 SC into the magic circle. I have tried You Tube videos to no avail.
Sunny Jess says
Hi! I am a novice at crocheting. I found this pattern and with the help of some youtube tutorials I completed the hat portion and ear flaps. However I did the Child size and the hat is even too big for me. Lol. So I have done it again and am at row 10, I am counting all the right stitches and using the H hook and Vanna White yarn and it still seems it may be on the big size for my 8 year old. Am I doing something wrong? Are you supposed to pull very tightly ? I am more of a loose crocheter and I just don’t know how to make it smaller. Thanks!
Brenda says
I love this. I saw a little girl wearing a similar rainbow unicorn hat and the lady who made it put eyes and nose/mouth on it. SO Beautiful!
Audrey McConkey says
Such a great hat! Just finished making it for my 2 1/2 year old, she has a unicorn bath towel and has started trying to wear it everywhere. I made the border rainbow as well! I posted it in instagram, please let me know if I should post a link to the actual pattern. I did hashtag you.
Lesley says
Hi there, I love your pattern!! I’m going to make this for my 3year old niece for Christmas. Just out of curiosity, approximately how much white yarn do you need for a child size hat?
Amber says
What size of hook is the horn done in?
Nidia Cedeño says
Excelentes patrones, sencillos, bien explicados. Me gustan mucho. Felicitaciones
Elaine says
Do you have a gauge for this pattern? I’m so excited to make it but I tend to need to make a gauge swatch to find the right hook for my yarn.

Hello I am Lenke and I live in Hungary. Congratulations to this imaginative and very nice hat. Five grandchildren crocheted small shoulder bag for them than they say tarisznyát- mice, frogs, unicornist my daughters and women’s bag, but it’s a super cap. I made my grandson Dori.

This is the 3rd, possibly the 4th year I have made this hat. I changed the red to pink, and rotate beginning color, Last year I even made a black hat with layered shades of blue for the mane. I have had more requests for this hat than any other than Elmo. It really is beautiful. Thank you for sharing the pattern
kari says
how many reds did you do around the horn? I am making a 3-9? I think it was?

Hi!

Thank you for the pattern I love it and we love all your patterns. We really appreciate you.
Just a note – unicorns aren’t just for little girls. I’m making this hat for my rainbow, unicorn loving son. <3
