Sunday Flea

Room 363 and Whimsy Decor shared a booth. More photos here.

Jennifer Rizzo Designs had a wonderful booth.

Sunday I decided to go to the Kane County Flea Market. I haven't been there for a very long time, so I was surprised to see the new buildings. The weather was so perfect - sunny, a slight breeze and the temperature was about 80 degrees. I wish I could remember to take my camera out of my purse more often at these kind of things. There were lots and lots of beautiful booths with fun vintage items.

Sew Happy!

On my many adventures last week, I stumbled upon this fabulous little find. I've always wanted an antique sewing machine table, but usually they are way out of my price range. But not this one - I was lucky enough to get it for a song, sewing machine included! All it really needed was a little dusting an application of lemon oil and now it shines like a beauty!

Vintage Market

This past weekend I went to the Vintage Market at Viva La Cottage. This is the 5th year of the sale and I have missed going to it every year - until this year. It is a small sale, but oh so worth going to.
The weather was perfect and lots of people in attendance.

I bought the shabby chic white tool box pictured above from Janine at Chippy Shabby. I did get a few other goodies and wished I had bought more. I missed out on an adorable green shelf that would have been perfect in my guest room. Oh well - finders keepers, losers weepers - I should have been quicker and more decisive!
Beautiful picnic tables ready for you to sit down and enjoy some refreshments.
The pictures below were taken inside the Viva La Cottage shop. Angie does such a lovely job at merchandising her treasures.
Don't you just love this bed swing?
White ironstone - I've bought my share from this shop.
Vintage mix-masters - Love them!
You can see more pictures from the Vintage Market here and here.

For The Bride

I made this little card for my daughter. We are going to another shower given in her honor on Saturday. I'm so pleased with how it turned out. The image is a vintage wedding cake topper and the greeting is from a vintage bridal shower card. I used a page from a 1926 Danish songbook - this particular song is about LOVE. And the book text on the crepe paper rosette is from an old French novel. Our side of the family has Danish roots and the groom's family has French ancestry, so I was so thrilled to be able to use these two elements together.Of course I couldn't resist using lots of glitter - both clear and silver glass glitter. Dresen dye-cut love birds and vintage lace complete the card.
This sweet little procelain couple is actually a bell by Lefton, circa 1953. I found this on one of my antiquing trips and their heart-shaped mouths and the bride's aqua bouquet told me they were definitely coming home with me!

A Little Shopping

One of my all-time favorite shops is called Viva La Cottage. It's a darling little place and the owner, Angie has such a talent for setting up cozy and wonderful displays.

I mean, who wouldn't want to spend a restful afternoon napping on this hanging bed?

There are new items inter-mixed with antiques and flea market finds, cleverly used in the displays. Something as simple as a few mother of pearl buttons scattered across a vintage doily or as unique as an antique iron crib attached to the wall and used for shelves ~ I always go away with ideas on how to use my own pieces at home. And the linens she has are to die for! Crisply starched white pyjamas or blouses or hankies or table linens all hanging or laying out as they would in your very own home.

This is what I purchase on this trip ~ a lovely salt & pepper shaker set which I plan to fill with German glass glitter and a vintage French Language course book.

Surrounding the shop are beautiful gardens that include everything AND the kitchen sink (well, I guess it's actually a bathroom sink!)

Low tea* is served outside under this natural arbor.

*Did you ever wonder what the difference is between High Tea and Low tea? Brenda Hyde From Old Fashioned Living explains it this way:

High tea sounds elegant and brings to mind lavish tea desserts, scones and dainty sandwiches. Often high tea is described as a more lavish version of afternoon tea. However, this has never been true, and is a misuse of the term. High tea was actually a working man's hearty tea and supper after a long, hard day of manual labor. It is actually the combination of afternoon tea and the evening meal. The working person, whether male or female, would work until late afternoon, often missing lunch and certainly afternoon tea. They would return home in the early evening and high tea would be served at the main table or "high table" rather than in the parlor or sitting room. High tea would include tea, bread and cheese.

Afternoon tea on the other hand, would often be served at smaller, lower tables with dainty desserts and fine china. This was often referred to as low tea. While this does not sound elegant, it was the tea preferred by the upper class. In the 1800's the practice of inviting friends to tea became popular, especially among the rich. This will vary too depending on if it's formal or informal, but almost always includes:sandwiches and/or savories, scones, toast, crumpets or muffins, cookies, plain cakes, quick breads and sometimes an elegant cake to finish the tea. Afternoon tea is generally served between lunch and a later dinner; anywhere from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Antiquing, Crafting, & Gratitude

Yesterday I went for a drive to my favorite little shop which sells new and vintage and handmade items. It is the best combination of merchandise I can think of for a store to carry. I dream about owning my own shop like that someday. I bought the little china nutmeg spice jar while I was there. I thought it would look darling on a tray filled with cups of eggnog during holiday parties. My favorite find of the day is the sweet caddy pictured above. The crystal pieces will be perfect on my desk filled with german glitters. The caddy itself is tarnished silver, which I think I will keep that way for now. Oh and did I mention that the whole thing spins?

Today I was working on some Etsy and Glitter & Grunge orders and also on the gifties for Heather's fun 12 Days to Christmas Swap that I am participating in with all sort of talented ladies. I've got to get those in the mail at the beginning of the week so everything else is taking a back seat for the time being.

I got an email yesterday from a friend of mine with a request that I couldn't refuse. I thought I would pass it along in case any of you might want to do the same. I have a friend whose brother was hospitalized at Walter Reed after being injured in Iraq and so I thought sending a card is the least I could do to show my gratitude and brighten a soldier's day. Here is the email:

When addressing your Christmas cards this year, take one card and send it to the address below.
If everyone sends one card, think of how many cards these special people who have sacrificed so much would get. Send your card to:
A Recovering American Soldier
c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center
6900 Georgia Avenue, NW
Washington, D.C. 20307-5001

EDITED: Unfortunately it was brought to my attention by Dawn of Artist Reborne, that Walter Reed Hospital will not accept any cards addressed to "A Recovering American Soldier." (Click here for more info on the subject). What a shame! So unless anyone knows the name of a particular soldier they'd like to share with us, I guess we'll have to find a different way to show our appreciation. Thanks Dawn for passing along this information.

Antiquing

It was a beautiful day to go antiquing, so that is what we did! All three of us got up early and headed out for breakfast and then to the antique fair. This is the same fair I went to last month (see post here) when it was soooo humid and horribly hot! Not this month though. . .the weather was perfect! I found some good buys on old books....should have bought more.....I always have regrets when I get home. I thought these were good since it is "back to school" time. Wish I had found the In College Days book when I was making this for my daughter - which by the way I still haven't finished.
Lots of great dollar rhinestone jewelry this time. It was hard to know when to stop digging!
A great vendor with lots of inexpensive old photographs. . . again, I should have made an offer for the entire lot. Dumb! I already have plans in mind for these, so stay tuned!
And below is my special find of the day! I told my husband and daughter to be on the look out for an old train case. I wasn't really looking for a particular color because I didn't think that there would be a huge color selection. We came across a few reasonably priced ones that were terribly stained or had ripped linings, etc. Near the end of the day we stumbled upon a darling little shabby-chic type booth that had several sets of luggage. Again, the train cases were badly damaged. Then my daughter looks up and sees the one pictured below. . . .
. . . and I couldn't believe my eyes. The true color is closer to the pic below, which happens to match my little car perfectly. And since I wanted to do something like Rebecca did here with it, the color couldn't have been better if I had special ordered it. And to top it off, it was priced less than the damaged train case. I can't wait to clean it and fill it up with art supplies!

I also bought another suitcase full of sewing notions, dress patterns, buttons, etc. for a song because the vendor said she was tired of packing it up at the end of each show. I found quite a few vintage postcards of the area where our cottage is located at. Usually they are difficult to find. And also a few tiny porcelein doll parts which didn't photograph well enough to post. All in all, I'd say it was a successful shopping trip for a beautiful birthday weekend!
