FINAL GIRL explores the slasher flicks of the '70s and '80s...and all the other horror movies I feel like talking about, too. This is life on the EDGE, so beware yon spoilers!

Nothing will come between you and this blu-ray...

...if, of course, you decide to pick it up at some point! I am of course talking about the new fancy-pants limited edition of High Tension from Second Sight Films, coming November 27th and now available for pre-order

And I do mean fancy-pants. Just look at it! It's got all sorts of interviews and features and commentaries and writing, including an essay by yours truly. Limited editions from Second Sight are always drool-worthy (I sleep with their Lake Mungo release under my pillow every night. I won't lie, it's not comfortable at all, but I can't help myself. It's so pretty.) so I'm looking forward to getting this one in my greasy, bloody clutches. It's also just plain nice to see High Tension get an upgrade! And NO I'm not interested in hearing about how "the movie is good until the twist ruins it." Save it for the next person you pass on the street! I'm getting in my truck AND in my car and I'm driving away from that 20 year old criticism. (High Tension is 20 years old, can you believe it? C'est incroyable!)

Things to Wear, Things to See

Hello! Happy Friday the 13th to you. How will you be celebrating? Playing the game? Watching A New Beginning yet again? Let me tell you, friends, ever since I began loving Part V, my life has improved in countless ways. My hair is shinier and fuller, my IQ is up nearly three-quarters of a point, I am wary those damn enchiladas, and I now carry a picture of myself in my wallet everywhere I go. You could say I'm a hashtag blessed big dildo!

Anyway. Enough about me. OH WAIT IT'S NOT ENOUGH!

First of all, I know you know what's up, which means you're a fan of The Faculty of Horror. It's the horror podcast to end all horror podcasts, so I bet you can guess how stoked I was when they asked me to art up-n-design their limited edition Class of 2018 t-shirt. (Hint: I was wicked stoked!) (Okay that's not so much a "hint" as it is an "answer" but whatever.) And now this t-shirt is available for purchase! When purchased, it will be available for you to wear! ON YOUR BODY!

If you want it FOR YOUR BODY or to put on that weird mannequin you have in the corner of your bedroom (I'm not judging) (okay "weird" is a little judge-y but come on), well, here's the link.

"But what if I want some of your art to celebrate today's holiday but I don't have a body?" you might ask. Well, I would posit that you could gift the t-shirt to someone who does have a body. But! If you are only thinking about yourself, today is the perfect day for me to remind you about my book Death Count: All of the Deaths in the Friday the 13th Film Series, Illustrated. Buy it and see what someone probably called "Okay"!

As always on this most holy of days, I wish you all a ki ki ki and a ma ma ma.

A reminder!

I've gotten quite a warm reception and some very kind words about Death Count. I'm delighted that folks are delighted! Some people have even gone so far as to post pictures of the book or of themselves with the book and I love it so much...not to be greedy, I'm definitely hoping for some pets-with-Death Count shots in the future.

This is courtesy of our forever pal Jason at My New Plaid Pants!
If you've yet to get in on the hot, hot Death Count action, it's available at Amazon–they even discounted the price to $19.07, what a deal! I'm still working on the Kindle edition, hopefully I'll have that soon and I'll update.

Signed copies are still available directly from me for $19.95 , and there are also a few sketch editions left for $45. If you'd like a signed or sketched version, Paypal me at stacieponder (at) gmail dot com. If it's a sketch edition, be sure to tell me which character (from Part One–Jason X) you'd like! And be sure to include a mailing address. Sorry my dudes, sketch edition and signed copies are available in the US only. [SKETCH EDITION SOLD OUT! SIGNED COPIES STILL AVAILABLE]

I just really want to post pictures of people with my book forever. IT'S THE BEST THING. Tag me on "social" "media" or email the pics my way or something. Just keep 'em coming, man, I'm jonesin' for it!

Happy Friday the 13th!

Wow, a Friday the 13th in October. I can't think of a mo better day to make this announcement:

I have written-n-drawn a book about Friday the 13th and it's now available! Available to buy! You can hold one, clutch it to your bosoms and tell it all your secretest secrets!

Based on my Death Count tumblr of long ago (well, it started in 2014, I guess that's long ago enough), this book features each death in the series illustrated in full color, as well as writing about each film, a foreword by the inimitable Alexandra West, and even MORE artwork besides. More than 120 pages in all!

If all of this isn't enough to tempt you, look what these fine folks have to say:

"Stacie has always been one of my favorite weirdos. She's funny and smart and draws cool horror stuff. Buy it. Be smug." – Lena Headey, who is undoubtedly best-known for her role in the 2005 film The Cave.

But wait, there's more!

Okay, so if I've convinced you, here is the link to the Amazon listing for the book where you can buy it directly! The Kindle version will be available next week...I'll be sure to update this when it's ready.

Also I am taking pre-orders for a limited sketch edition. $45 will get you a copy of the book with a full-color sketch inside. Shipping is included, but this sketch edition is for folks in the United States only. Sorry international friends, shipping is a real (costly) drag! If you are interested, you can Paypal me at stacieponder (at) gmail dot com. Make sure to include your address and which character you'd like me to draw for you–just a character name, only characters from Part One (1980) through Jason X please!

Again, the sketch edition is a pre-order, and I'm only doing 25 of them! Once the list is full I'll get crackin' and mailin' 'em out. I'll update here when they're ready to be shipped.

[SKETCH EDITION SOLD OUT!]

Some folks may be interested in a signed copy of the regular edition–if that's the case, simply Paypal me the cost of the book ($19.95) and I'll mail you a copy of Death Count with my name scribbled in it. Again, shipping is included but it's for the US only.

[SIGNED EDITION SOLD OUT!]

I think that's it? How exciting. A book!

Feb 13, 2015

Happy Friday the 13th!

It's true, I feel a bit of a moral imperative to post when a Friday the 13th rolls around. Sure, sure, I practically grew up with the film series like any good horror young'un. But it's really in the period since I started Final Girl that I've become well and truly enamored with the antics of Jason, his mama, and even that Roy fellow. It could be that the property itself has been celebrated by the community at large, what with the His Name Was Jason and the Crystal Lake Memories (the book and the documentary!) and the such. I've written about victims (I know...I should bring that feature back), I've drawn the victims (and the killers)..I've devoted a shit ton of my limited brain space to Friday the 13th!

And I tell ya, it still surprises me. See, in the world of fandoms there are certain battles that are destined to be eternally waged: The Beatles vs The Rolling Stones, Yankees vs Red Sox, Star Trek vs The Next Generation, Old Becky vs New Becky, Riunite vs Riunite on Ice. Everyone chooses a side and sticks with it forever, and in the Friday the 13th vs Halloween battle I've always been a Halloween girl. I still am! Yet...look, I've always treated Friday like a dirty secret, like an awful person I'm ashamed to date. But here it is: I can no longer deny that as a whole I prefer the Friday series. AS A WHOLE. Maybe I've been too heavily influenced by all the hours I've spent in its company, but I'd most definitely rather watch Friday the 13th Part V than Halloween 5.

If you like this image, you can buy it on a t-shirt or a print or something right here!

I've spent time this morning ruminating on who my favorite Friday the 13th character is. Not my favorite kill or my favorite final girl, but my overall favorite character.

Correction: I've spent WAY TOO MUCH time. Like, "this question is on par with 'what is the purpose of life?' amounts of time.

And I still don't have an answer, but no matter. Somewhere along the way "who is my favorite?" became "who would I want to hang out with?" and that's a way better question. Will I find an answer? WILL I?

Jimmy (The Final Chapter)

Would I want to hang out with Jimmy? Fuck no! I bet he'd be really annoying in a short amount of time. Even if he weren't, you'd probably get stuck hanging out with Ted as well, and you know he's the worst.

Violet (A New Beginning)

Listen, even if you want to hang out with Violet, she sure as shit doesn't want to hang out with you. She's so surly! You'd say "Hey Violet, wha–" and she'd say "Fuck off."

Maddy (The New Blood)

Maddy might be okay, like she'd be down to play some Dungeons & Dragons maybe. But she'd also spend a lot of time complaining about stuff and that would be too much like hanging out with myself.

Doug and Sara (The Final Chapter)

They're awfully nice and adorable and surprisingly mature for a Friday film, but...bleh. I feel like he would want to talk about finances and she would never want to go get Indian food because she's afraid it might be "too spicy".

Mark (Part II)

Okay, I would totally hang out with Mark! He seems so nice, and who wouldn't want to look at that handsome face all the time? Here's the thing, though: my apartment isn't wheelchair-accessible, so we'd have to hang out at his place or out out all the time. That's fine and all, but it doesn't really jive with my "creepy recluse" lifestyle and I'm sure we'd only hang out like twice before we just stopped texting each other.

JJ (Jason Takes Manhattan)

She might be cool...for ten minutes. Beyond that, you know she'd bring her guitar everywhere and she'd want to play all the time and you'd have to cope with that while secretly thinking that her music is garbage and you'd feel bad about that because you're supposed to be her friend and it's not like you have any musical talent for sure so who are you to judge well maybe you're just a terrible person because unterrible people don't think those sorts of things so do you just accept your station in life or try to change and for fuck's sake you don't really have much in common with JJ when you really think about it so it's best if you quit hanging out. Or something like that.

Fox (Part 3)

I imagine hitting it off well with Fox, but then ultimately she'd keep showing up at my place with her friends in tow wanting to "party" and I'd have to be like "Fox, I'm reading right now" but I'd let them all in anyway. Then the next day I'd wake up and my place would be trashed and all my booze would be gone and some DVDs would be missing and I'd be so mad, but then I'd think "Well, they are literally a gang so what did I expect?"

Brenda (Friday the 13th)

Okay, Brenda seems nice and all, and she reads, but–

Wait! I don't think there's a but! I would totally hang out with Brenda.

Ginny, Paul, Ted (Part 2)

I would also hang out with these three. Right? Only a jerk wouldn't want to.

So there you go. Out of, like, 200 characters in the series, I've found four I would hang out with. I could go through everyone else, but it would probably take me the rest of my life to go through them all. Suffice it to say, everyone else would probably be dismissed with a "boring", "gross", "annoying", "what would we talk about?", or "obnoxious".

Unless I'm forgetting someone awesome...so tell me. Who would you hang out with?

some things!

Here is a recent SLASHERS 101 sketch edition sketch, aw yeah! Click that link there if you want to order a copy.

The next installment of the Final Girl Film Club will be #50. 50! Can you dig it? As such, it feels incredibly monumental, or at least mildly noteworthy. The movie choice should reflect this, although I'm not yet sure in what way. Should it be a classic film we've all likely seen before, but perhaps have not talked about? Should it be something called Martyrs that will finally force me to write about Martyrs? Should it be something I've never seen? Should it be a straight-up slasher flick to keep in line with the OG theme of Final Girl? Sigh. So many choices. For the next couple of days, I'm open to suggestions in the comments, so suggest away! But maybe consult the list of past selections first- heck, even just the films I've reviewed in general- so we don't get all redundant up in here.

Film Club Second Chance! Way back when, in the 4th meeting o' the Film Club, I chose a movie that was not readily available at the time: The Initiation. Only two fine people took part! Well, guess what. The Initiation is now on Netflix Instant Watch, so now more people can take part. So, on Monday August 20th (that's this Monday, y'all), I will re-run my original review and add links to anyone who wants to join in. I'll probably watch it again in the interim because I do love that movie. The usual Film Club rules apply:

1. watch the movie
2. link to Final Girl somewhere in your review
3. email me the link: stacieponder at gmail dot com
4. bask in the warm embrace of your fellow Film Clubbers

That's it! If you wrote a review of The Initiation a million years ago and you want to be included, that's fine. Just add the link to Final Girl in there somewhere and send it along.

In case it bears repeating, I need your link by Monday, 8/20.

Some folks have sent me pictures of themselves wearing Final Girl t-shirts, like so:

get this shirt and others right here!

Tickles my fancy, it does. In fact, it got me thinking- back when Wizard Magazine was a thing to read, they would publish photos of fans and celebrities holding a copy of the magazine. Like, if you met Bruce Campbell and you had Wizard with you and you were like "Hey Bruce Campbell, hold this copy of Wizard while we take a picture" and Bruce Campbell was all "Uh, okay", you know?

Well, I think I would like to start a permanent page of people with Final Girl stuff- wearing a t-shirt, someone's cat reading SLASHERS 101, whatever. You don't need a celebrity, because fuck celebrities, right? Except Tom Atkins and Adrienne Barbeau and Tracey Gold. I mean, if you get a Final Girl something-or-other in the vicinity of a celebrity and you snap a pic, that's cool. But I care about you. *tear* I'd rather see you wearing a horror centipede t-shirt on top of Mount Everest. Or at the grocery store, same thing. And if you have a site or work online somewhere or something, I'll link to you. Just email pics to stacieponder (at) gmail.com, or send a link if you've posted 'em somewhere already. Don't be afraid to show your face in the picture! But do not show your genitalia!

New t-shirt and print!

YES my friends, you read that right: a new t-shirt and print are available over at my Society 6 shop. CLICK THIS LINK to get free shipping from now until August 12, oh yeah! The Horror Centipede!

So there you have it. Looking at that t-shirt makes me proud to be alive, I tells ya.

FYI, I tried watching a movie the other night called 11/11/11. Even though Netflixians gave it but 1.25 stars, I thought "They must all be wrong! It's an Omen ripoff, it has to be good!" Well. After "The Asylum Presents" popped up on my screen, I started thinking that I was likely the wrong one. The very, very wrong one. And 35 minutes in, I actually started to feel my life slowly ebbing away...and I realized I was spending some of my last moments on Earth (I mean, if you count your whole life as your last moments on Earth, you dig?) watching a big, huge pile of shit. Then I decided that watching a literal big, huge pile of shit would be a better way to spend my time than finishing 11/11/11, so I turned it off. No offense to the people who made the movie- for all I know, the rest of it was incredible. But I'm okay with never finding out, even if it means my life is lesser for it.

What a great story!

sketch-o-rama

I thought I'd post up some of the recent sketches I've done on the back of Slashers 101 that fine people everywhere have commissioned. Sharing, caring, et cetera et cetera. You guys make some awesome, awesome requests and I'm having a blast drawing this stuff!

Info regarding how you can get a sketch edition of your very own or one to give to someone else is right here, dudes.

Fashionable Friday!

Hey, check this out! Maybe you saw that Casual Friday picture I posted on my Faceplace last week? You didn't? Well, no matter. Here it is.

What's super cool is that it's now available as a t-shirt...a t-shirt you can wear! They're available through my shop at Society 6 for only 18 bucks, so go take a gander and getcher fashion on!

This could be you! Or a female you know!

Jan 16, 2012

Getcher mini-comic here!

Okay guys, Slashers 101 is done and ready to be printed! And then MAILED! Here's the cover again to jog your memory...and page 1, too!

I set up a STORE FRONT (oh, it looks so bare) where you can order it. $5.00 only! OR...$10 only for the sketch edition. The difference? The sketch edition includes a sketch on the back cover. Just tell me what you want- what you really, really want- and I'll draw it for you. Neat!

I hope you like it. I think it's pretty fun, but then I made it, so.

Edited to add a couple of things!

- For the sketch edition, I love you but try to keep them simple please! EG, "Jason Voorhees and his mom" is better than "Jason Voorhees and his mom at a tailgate party with the cast of Gimme a Break!" What I mean is, it's better for me- these are $5 sketches, after all. Although now I want to do Jason and his mom with Nell Carter and the brood....also and The Brood. Anyway, you know what I mean and I hope that's not gross to say. I will give you a good sketch no matter what, don't worry!

- I'm only going to the post office once a week- Thursdays or Fridays- so that will affect the shipping time, depending.

Jan 11, 2012

Here is a thing...

...that I am doing!

It's a mini-comic (meaning, 8.5" x 5.5" DIY, baby). It's about time I did something like this! Basically, if someone were to ask you "What's a slasher movie?" and you'd read this comic, you would be able to answer. It's funny and full of facts and cool stuff. Neat! Why anyone would ask you that question I don't know, but people are weird and great sometimes.

Anyway, if I can help it I don't like to put stuff out there until it's DONE because things happen and stuff doesn't get finished or it must get put on the waaaaaay back burner or what have you. But! This will be done Monday and I wanted to share the cover because I think it's pretty spiff. Final page count is still unclear, but it will fall in the 24-28 range, most likely. It will be so cheap you'll puke your pants! I will let you know how to get one when I know how you can get one. I know it's DIY and a mini-comic, but I don't want the printing to be shitty. And I'd like the cover to be in color, like you see it. So I'll figure that all out!

And there will be a Final Girl book of sorts for everyone to hold! I hope it'll be just a part of something larger, but who knows yet.

Dec 26, 2011

like, drawings and whatever

When Final Girl readers commission sketch cards or art, it's nearly always horror-related. Weird how that works, isn't it? WELL. I just posted a big batch of recent stuff and here are said horror-related commissions! The rest of them can be seen here, and FYI, I'm available to make more so get in touch if'n you want some.

These first four cards are a set- the buyer asked for a 4-card set featuring "the history of slashers", but what that meant was up to my interpretation. He listed a few movies he likes, but otherwise it was my choice. Sooo...I went for a theme within some of the landmark slasher flicks. I really had too many ideas, though, and my brain is wrestling with a bigger project.

For these next three (Texas Chain Saw, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween), the buyers wanted specific scenes.
