Ghastlies Table Runner - another Ghastlie finish

My second Ghastlie finish to share has also been a long waiting UFO. I created these blocks for the Wicked Blog Hop in October 2012.

Since I'm trying to focus on getting projects actually finished, this one wasn't hard to get to the completed top stage and then it was added to the pile to get quilted.  I turned the blocks into a table runner for my long dining room table but it could just as easily become a skinny wall hanging if I so choose at some point.

Each of the family members got a narrow border to make the block pop and then a final outer border to bring them up to a 17 inch width. I tried to search up the names of the different characters but couldn't find them so if you know which family member is who, please let me know.

I chose the Gossamer panto and used So Fine Fern thread for both the top and the bobbin.

The backing is the same spider web print that I used for the other Ghastlie project.

I think it's just the right setting for my creepy candelabra, don't you?

There's a lot more Ghastlie fabric in my stash and one day I'll get around to using more of it but until then, at least I have these completed projects to add to my Halloween decor.

The Ghastlie Gals Wall Hanging - a Ghastlie finish

Today being All Hallow's Eve, it's the perfect time to share a recent finish.Way back....say 10 years ago this month, I hosted a couple of Halloween themed round robin type events though this particular one was back and forth between me and one other quilter, hence I called it a See Saw Swap.

My swap partner, Edy, didn't have a blog then and unfortunately I've lost contact with her in the years since but I'm still thankful to her for the fabulous additions she made to my quilt.

I started out with one of my favorite scenes from the fabric line, the center Ghastlie sisters, that I bordered with the black and white print and then off it was sent to Edy.

When it returned, she had added the pink and green borders to the right and bottom and the black border with the appliqued circles to the top and left sides.

My next addition was the trees and brambles borders with a few Flying Geese blocks.

Next Edy added the skeletons and the braid borders.

For my last contribution, half square triangles in Mauve, Green and Black were added. Edy added the final round and it was a great surprise when it made it back home for the last time.

Recently I made time to put it on the frame and get it finished.

Here it is completed.  I've enjoyed looking at this quilt this season.  Who wouldn't?  It's the Ghastlies in all their glory! The finished wall hanging has been adorning the spot above the desk in the space between our kitchen and great room so I pass by it often every day.

The sinister sisters are still keeping their beady eyes on the happenings around them and giving everyone that eerie look that they do so well.

I backed it with this black and white spiderweb print.

The panto I chose for this one was Parchment.  I used Glide Medium Gray thread on the top and Black thread in the bobbin. It was finished off with a binding in more of the Brambles print.

It only took 10 years for this UFO to get finished and sadly it's not my oldest UFO.  I'm just happy to finally have it done.

I've got another Ghastlie finish to share to check back soon.

Spooktacular Mini Swap 15 received

I can't believe that it has been over a month since I last posted here.
I don't think I've ever gone that long before.
I haven't shared because there hasn't been much  to show you.
There have been only 2 quilt related things going on here lately, one being the really fun Spooktacular Halloween Mini Quilt Swap.
I received my package a number of weeks ago but haven't had time to take pics of all the goodies until now.

My partner was Julie, no blog but she's on IG @jpy0718
She hit is out of the park with the fabulous mini quilt that she made for me plus all the other little goodies that she included.
Here is what I received.
Just look at this gorgeous Ghastlie mini quilt. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!
Julie had never heard of the Ghastlies before this swap and now I think she's hooked too.
Each area has some different quilting that really looks great.
The back is so much fun and she even embroidered the label.  Very cool.
She also embroidered for me this ghoulish hand towel.  Love it too.
Though I don't have nor want an embroidery machine, things like this make me think twice about one.
Julie included a pretty note pad (one can never have too many of those) and a package of needles.
And last but certainly not least is the sooooo cute little zipper pouch.  How many more times can I say I love it!!!!
Julie thank you, thank you so very much for being such a wonderful swap partner.  I truly adore all that you sent to me.  Receiving terrific swap packages like this one makes me truly wish that I had more time to participate in more swaps.  I can't wait to get the quilt hung in my studio where I can look at it all year round!

It's Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day!

Monday morning I caught wind that Sew Mama Sew's biannual Giveaway Day was coming this week and I decided to dive in and join in on the fun.
It just sew happens that I've been thinking that it has been a while since I've hosted a giveaway.
My longtime readers already know all the crazy fun stuff about me but those of you that are new to my online home might want a glimpse into my world.

I'm a mom to 2 kidlets nicknamed Jammer and Sunshine.  They are 8 and 6 sure keep me busy.
Hubs is a volunteer firefighter (over 30 years) and past fire chief so we never know when his pager will go off and he'll be rushing out the door.  It has happened during a holiday meal more times than I can remember.

Last November I became a Moda Bake Shop designer and released my first pattern designed for that, Castles on the Horizon featuring Kate Spain's Horizon line.
I'm currently working on the design for my next Moda Bake Shop project which will feature Kate's new line coming out in October, Canyon.
And if you are wondering, Yes I am a full fledged, card carrying  Kate Spain fabric fanatic.  I have hosted not 1 but 2 Kate Spain Charm Swaps and I just might have a couple of more in the works for later this year (more details coming soon).

Let's see, what else can I tell you?  I also love Halloween prints and especially the Ghastlies.  I have a bunch of that one. I've made a few projects with it but many more are on my To Make list. Here is the cover that I made for my Lucy.
And here is the mini quilt that I made for the Ghastlie Swap hosted by my good online friend Kathy of Kwilty Pleasures last fall.  She is a kindred spirit with me as she loves the Ghastlies and Halloween too.

I have a longarm machine (though at 17" it is technically a midarm) and her name so Penelope.  I've had her for 2 years now though we've only gotten to know each other over the past year.  She even got a fancy spa treatment last June that upgraded everything except her motor and now she purrs like a kitten. I just don't get as much time with her as I'd like.
I actually got into quilting because of 100 Good Wishes Quilts.  You can read about my journey here. So far I have made 4 of them and there are currently at least 5 more in the works. This one was for a sweet boy who was battling cancer and sadly lost last year.
This one was for a friend in California's daughter.
Two years in a row I made quilts for the kids' teachers as end of school year thank you gifts.  Here is a sampling of those. Nowadays I'm much busier and don't make full sized quilts for the teachers but I still enjoy giving them something handmade.

These 2 Red. White and Black Eight Pointed Star quilts were made from blocks sent by my blog readers in memory of my nephew Danny which were raffled off that year at the  annual softball tournament in his name.  This is the queen size one.
And this is the lap size one created with the additional blocks that I received.  If you are interested, you can read the entire story about Danny and these quilts.  The link to all the posts is in my sidebar.
This last quilt that I'll share today was the kids' art quilt for my daughter's school I created last spring. It now hangs for all to see in the school's lobby.
There are a lot more fun had on this here little ole quilting blog.  I love to host other events and some I've done in the past are: Modern Mini Mystery Round Robin (2 years), Quilt U Be Mine Mini Round Robin, Kate Spain Charm Swap Rounds 1 & 2, Halloween See Saw Swap, It's A Sister Thing Swap (2 years) and The Primary Bee.  Plus there are a few new ones in the planning stages.  I also host a weekly Stunning Stitchin Sunday post where I showcase some of the fabulous quilting I come across on the web.

I guess after all of this blabbering about me and my quilty endeavors, you are wondering what I'm giving away today. I looked through my special box of  giveaway goodies and decided to offer up to one winner this pair of Moda Social Club charm packs.
A few months ago I whipped up this duo of pillows with this fabric line and loved it so much that I acquired a couple of charm packs to give to one of you.
To enter:

1. Leave me one comment and just tell me....what sort of teacher gifts do you give each year, or if your kids are past this age, what kinds of gifts have you given in the past.  I'm looking for some new ideas for this year.

2. My followers get a 2nd entry and please do it in a separate comment.

If you like you can also follow me on Instagram at @crayonboxquiltstudio and on my Facebook page though there isn't much there yet because I'm still trying to figure out how to link all 3 of these together.

The giveaway will close at Midnight on Sunday, May 10th and the winner will be announced.  International friends are welcome to enter too.  Although I usually respond to all comments, due to the large number of them received during these giveaway days, I will be unable to do it this time.

I hope you have enjoyed this little glimpse into my world and I'd love it if you stick around.  You never know what fun little event that I'll decide to host next.

More Ghastlie mail

This time I get to show you what I sent to my partner Laura. Unfortunately Laura doesn't have a blog so I couldn't stalk her to learn about her tastes and likes so I just had to guess.
Kwilty Pleasures
I considered quite a number of different ideas before settling on making her a mini quilt to display in her home. Here is what I packed into the box.
The goodies that I included with the mini quilt include some season themed stickers, a couple of cute note pads (one can never have too many of those), some fun Halloween clothespins that can be used to hold up the quilt, glow-in-the-dark bat mask, a appropriately eerie colored nail polish and a Boo Crew by Moda mini charm pack.
For the mini quilt, I momentarily considered making a Nested Churn Dash as so many others have across quilting blog land but as usual with me, I didn't want to follow the crowd but instead wanted to head off in my own direction.  And I'm so happy that I did. While hunting through block books for ideas I came across one that fit the bill perfectly and so I went to town.

Down in the fog enveloped streets of the old South, you'd come across a long dirt road lined with severely overgrown Cypress trees that eventually lead you to the ancestral Ghastlie mansion, where you'd find every living and not-so-living member of the clan in residence.

A number of the Ghastlie family gang became part of this piece including these miserable looking sisters Mildred and Minerva. I do believe that the last sister Magda was off having an argument with family matriarch Mathilda.
Here you can catch a glimpse of Mathilda and Prudence and the gaggle of witches surely spinning up plans for some ghastlie deed.
Ghastlie children certainly aren't happy children as evidenced here.  Two of these young Ghastlies are Cordelia and Cassius, the twins of Sebastian and Darla, and I guess I wouldn't be too happy either with a cat as a parent.
I wonder where Gunnar Ghastlie is pointing us to go? To the cemetery with him perhaps?
Look who takes center stage in this little mini quilt....none other than Sebastian himself.  Until this Ghastlie portrait fabric came out, I had no idea that he is actually the son of Mathilda and Gaspar.  While looking through my choices, I knew immediately that he would be so appropriate as the featured Ghastlie, with his "I'm not amused" expression.

For the quilting, my own little ghastlie nature took over and I put Sebastian in a cage of sorts, quilting square spirals around and around and around until I got to the end. I figure if he ever got out of his cage, he'd get lost in this maze of quilting.
I only marked the first square lines and then eyeballed the rest, stopping where I felt like it at that moment.  It ended up looking great with just the right amount of organic-ness, being not too perfectly evenly spaced.
Do you think Sebastian isn't too pleased with me for trapping him in like this? Too bad kitty! You're stuck now.
Here is the finished mini quilt.  With a 6 inch center, it completed at 24 inches square.  I originally planned on making this nested 3 blocks out but that would have made it 36 inches and to me that isn't a mini quilt as much as it is a baby quilt.

I'm calling this my Overgrown Cypress quilt. The block name was so appropriate and the construction lent itself easily to being exploded.
I already have plans to remake this quilt, exploding it out even further and writing a tutorial so you can make one too. Stay tuned.

I hope Laura likes all of her Ghastlie goodies.  I really enjoyed creating this for her.  Thanks again to Kathy for playing the perfect host.  I'll take part in another Ghastlie swap anytime.
